Any good artifact of a beloved film is worth holding onto. VHS/Laserdisc/DVD with nice artwork; as you said, no different than having a movie poster. Keep an eye on the Special Features of your Blu-rays & DVDs.. many of these don't get migrated to new releases. I have a couple prized Laserdics, bought on eBay.. yet I've never owned a player & don't plan on it. I even still have a few ticket stubs of certain films I saw in theatres over 20 year ago. All these are items of hommage to the film itself.
Bought that Seven dvd set new at Best Buy, same as the special edition of Fight Club with cool packaging (same director). If i remember correctly it was around $25. Also bought a T2 dvd set that came in a metal slipcase. That was $30
Here are some for me: Ferris Bueller's Day Off: 1999 DVD release, this one is just a basic dvd, but has a commentary by John Hughes. I've heard that no other home media release has this commentary. Dogma: Original DVD release, simply because it's hard to find or upgrade my copy without paying a lot. Cocoon: Also impossible to upgrade copy, while the sequel is much easier to get a copy of. My Boys: Seasons 1-3. This was a sitcom that ran on TBS from 2006-2010, that can't be streamed on any major streaming service. It's on Crackle sometimes, but not every episode. The Bronx Is Burning: A miniseries that ran on ESPN in 2007. There is no way to stream this show. Most of my collection, I will not get rid of anyway.

I’ll never get rid of my director’s cut 4 disc set of the movie Pearl Harbor. It’s uncut with all the war carnage like in Saving Private Ryan. And it’s in great packaging as well.
