It makes my day seeing someone geek out to the details in deftones music. Abe Cunningham has the best style of any drummer. Can't imagine the confidence it would give to write music with a drummer that solid.
From some random interview I saw recently I am starting to believe the magic of Deftones is this weird combination of a guitarist that wants to play Meshuggah with a drummer that is all about hip hop.
I would point that to Atticus Ross his former group was 12 Rounds . it was Trip Hop meets Nick Cave and Barry Adamson . The Track The Light House could even be an unreleased track to my ears because she even did a vocal sound that sounded more like the 12 rounds singer
The intro to 6 Underground comes from the Goldfinger soundtrack (007 movie). Look up the track Golden Girl from the Goldfinger OST, it's about 1 min in.

Hey that's great! I wish this is how I learned music theory in college, can totally relate. That Sneaker Pimps album is so good...and SO 90s. Like Natural Born Killers and The Doom Generation as an album. I love shoegaze and trip-hop more than just about anything....and that album is a perfect mashup of the two. It's got that real street-wise urban thing going on....but it's also dreamy and harmonically rich. @@iximusic Well as it was in the late 90's early '00 and being ocd about my cd's I went through phases , one of which was learning about sudden stops and un tethered items becoming projectiles (cd case) . Shortly before mp3 players I went from a very large case with a zipper and a strap that held every cd case to a still rather thick sleeve style cd case which took me a while to find the right one because of wear and tear concerns on the cd's. one of the interesting techniques korn employ in their layering is mic'ing the bass to record the slaps, in addition to the pickups' output. Gives it that great rattling percussive thing. Also, I highly recommend a side-dive into "big dumb face", wes borland's creative project with his brother and some friends.

(just came across your channel, good stuff :-) )A little similar sounding/feeling song to that excellent Sneaker Pimps song is the also trip-hoppy Massive Attack song "The hunter gets captured by the game" from one of the Batman soundtracks. Unrelated sort of, but another great soundtrack song from that time is the Smashing Pumpkins' "Eye" from the Lost Highway soundtrack. That one also had the neat NIN instrumental "Driver down" and several other stand-out songs - as well as the Perfect Drug I think (though that came as a single also - I was working in music stores around that time and I remember the excitement over those tracks because following TDS and the remix album "Further down.." and prior to The Fragile, any hint of something new by NIN was highly anticipated. So The Perfect Drug turning up on that Soundtrack and also as a single/ep of sorts was really cool. Then I still remember when I was going through the upcoming release list sheets one day and saw NIN single on the list (which would have been either We're in this together now or the other early single from The Fragile, was it Everyday is exactly the same maybe?). I ended up buying it on cassette first because it came out on that a week or two before the CD version and we didn't want to wait to have/hear the song and any b-sides it might include.
Korn is the first band you had the same reaction as i do when i listen to them. Their song F*get goes just as hard as blind on that album. Korn's Korn was music made for outsiders. Slipknot's 1st two albums were the same vibe, Metabolic goes ultra hard.
The comment on the drum fill on Deftones Root referring to how the toms move between the channels is just the result of how the drums are micd. Drummers usually mic their drumset spatially so that you hear it as they hear it or in some cases micd opposite as if you were standing in front of them. On a separate note on Korn's 1st 3 albums each guitarist was dedicated a channel straight up. Monkey played out of one channel and Head out of the other exclusively. It only sounds full when they play the same thing together. I learned that when my headphone wire fried and I was only getting one channel in both ears. Half the music was gone. I don't know if they kept that up, but I thought it was really innovative.
Apparently we would have definitely had to hang out back in the day!! Our music tastes are all over the place but so much of the same!! I think it requires a deep appreciation of music in general to have such vastly different tastes in music as one person. Did that even make sense? Ha!
I'm a similar age to you and grew up with similar tastes as what you've gone through here... I was a Limp Bizkit fan for a good while and I thought at the time that John Otto (Drums) is very underrated, and I stand by it today 20+ years later...
Limp Bizkits guitarist Wes is doing harmonics and auto flange harmonics on the end of the phrase / part, in and between frets 2 and 3 on guitar, there, the harmonic series of harmonics are bunched up together enabling this technique, he is lightly touching the string and moving his finger along it as he picks basically Wes is so creative.. as are you, great video!
lots of nostalgia crossover there! I had all of these back in the day- frequently listen to adrenaline still, Lifter is my alltime favourite deftones song :)
Been looking forward to this since I saw (Part 1) and noticed that it said (Part 1)... so, uh, yeah. Let's go! Always had a soft spot for Sneaker Pimps. I don't like all of their stuff, but when they hit, they hit. Hadn't heard that remix, very cool. You hit everything I love about the tonality in 6 Underground. Really love Kelli's melodic choices and vocal flavor/playfulness. Korn. This is huge for me. On TikTok there are these videos where people try to "not react" to songs from various eras/genres... I have a thing... I watch them and when Korn comes on (I react, involuntarily of course, even when I know it's coming)... and the person doing the reaction so much as flinches... I always leave the same message. "Korn. Every. Fucking. Time." I know nobody cares... but it makes me happy to have a "thing", especially on an app where my age makes me entirely irrelevant. :) You never realized FoaL changed key there?? I feel so smart for once. Sure, you were younger at the time, I'm quite a bit older than you. I was past the height of my music knowledge, but I hadn't forgotten everything from my time in college earlier in the 90's. Also... GO!!!! I've never found anyone who was ready for that moment on first listen (Cool! I typed this before you said it. I typically react to your videos in real time as I'm listening. So awesome that you mentioned you weren't ready.
Thanks for sharing your memories! It's since the other video that i'm trying to remember what i'd listen in 90's, but i can't. Probably post-rock, Slint and so on, because was my biggest crush in those years. Anyway, your enthusiasm is really engaging, thank you again!

"6 Underground" sounds very much like a NIN song, harmonically. I wonder if Trent and Sneaker Pimps had some mutual inspiration..
19:50 i think its the left hand lifting off the strings to mute it so da daX dadaX (x being a mute) there are a lot of ways to mute stuff, but im pretty sure its just the left hand giving up for a moment hahahahah
love the fat guitar tone of Munky and Head. an Ibanez Universe 777 detuned a whole step A-D-G-C-F-A-d is the secret sauce behind that low end growl. in the song Fake when Jonathan screams 'Fake' the guitarists just hit all seven strings unfretted. hella fun to play imo;)
The first time John Davis did that wild heavy metal version of scattering was on Life Is Peachy's opener Twist & I still haven't heard any vocalist do anything near as unorthodox as that. By the way, "those chords" that sound so dissonant in Blind's intro are what Head calls "the Bungle chord" he explains the Bungle chord in this interview ua-cam.com/video/QMdEG1-jY3Q/v-deo.html Mr Bungle & Korn truly introduced new unique forms of dissonance to western music.
When you mentioned the Korn chords changing to a more choppy rhythm it reminds me of take a look around, limp bizkits mission impossible 2 track that does s similar thing towards the end
7 string guitars, dropped down tune, similar to drop d but in this case with 7 strings it's the A string there tuning the low open B string to, so most call it drop standard drop A tuning specifically for 7 string that is, the chords there playing are bar chord style and I believe are 5 to 6 semitones below what would be possible in the same position on a 6 string.
The 'ovetones' in the Limp song are harmonics. It's a technique on guitar where, on certain parts of a guitar string, you can lay your finger on the string without depressing the string to the fretboard, and it will create that overtone effect. There's tons of vids here on YT explaining it in detail. In the section you are referring to, Wes is sliding his finger up the string in a certain range to produce those notes, without actually fretting a note at all.
It's funny, because you were obviously in a very similar musical sphere to me growing up, but I must be a little older than you, because for so many of these albums, the main one I connected with was the one right before the one you mention.
The chorus of Engine No. 9 is doooope! It's funny I love every single song on Adrenaline but I can't for the life of me remember which title corresponds to which song.
@@iximusic Agreed. When i was djing at that radio station back on SPI 20 (yikes) years ago, i would bounce between engine no. 9 and birthmark on this album, and so many others on Around the Fur, including the killer title track. And i like where they've gone with their sound reently in albums like Gore.
If you haven't already, I recommened the deftones' b-side/rarities album. The acoustic to be quite and drive is sublime. And they're known for doing covers of lots of 80s bands that inspired them. They have little gems sprinkled on other works. For instance, there's a Depeche Mode tribute album called For the Masses from 1998 with one of the best collections of artists i'd seen then (failure, veruca salt, hooverphonic, rammstein, rabbit in the moon, the cure) since the Spawn soundtrack (1997) and the Judgement Night soundtrack (1993) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/For_the_Masses

FYI *all* of the sneaker pimps songs you listened to are remixes (and so is the cover art). "spin spin sugar" is the radio edit, which is basically a completely different song. "6 underground" is the nellee hooper remix, which is pretty subtle. it got confusing because they re-released the album with band on the cover and three remixes in place of the original tracks. the original cover is just the green PCB. but there are a few copies out there (like the one little indian 200g DMM vinyl) that use the original art with the re-release track listing.
I was born in the mid 90’s but I love late 90’s and early 00’s music, I’m one of those “born in the wrong decade” types. I should’ve been born in the mid 80’s so I could’ve been a teenager in the late 90’s and early 00’s. Also you seem very much like you were a raver in the 90’s.
@26:08 on the limp bizkit guitar sound Basically reminds me of Stabbing Westward - Save yourself ua-cam.com/video/5NZsCYOM4j0/v-deo.html Lets see the third part of this 'arc', thanks ixi
Hey Ixi when you do some more Deftones tunes be sure to check out their cover of the Cocteau Twins song "Wax & Wane" it's on "B-sides and Rarities" i think B)
ixi! I've got a question.....and I think you're one of the only people on earth that can answer it..... In keeping with this video's theme......Orgy - "Stitches." That song blew my 15 year old mind when it came out. Loved the video, loved that song, and those first 2 Orgy albums. Thanks TRL! But....the _chorus_ of Stitches, to this day, confounds me. What ARE the chords?? I've never found a tab or breakdown that gets it right. It always sounds....wrong. And it's only 4 chords. Each go-around I'm pretty sure the last chord is lowered by a semitone? Maybe? Is it power chords? Are they inversions with the 4th in the bass? I have no idea... It's nuts because it's SO simple...just a 4 chord turnaround. But my brain just cannot make heads or tails of it. Especially the last 2 chords in the progression. I'd love a breakdown of that song....or any Orgy song really. Or....if you could literally just use your musical powers to be like the chords are THIS. This has literally been bugging me for over 2 decades now....and I see no resolution in sight. I've tried playing along with it, trying every chord and permutation of chords, and nothing....literally nothing....sounds right. Weird huh? Any ideas?
Oh man well I hope this answer satisfies this lifelong conundrum! The notes are: Bb Gb D Db, then Bb Gb Eb D I actually don't think they're chords, it's just sounds like one note to me.
@@iximusic You are....the best! Going to try this on my guitar the moment I get home. The single note thing must be part of what screwed my mind up so much. That and how chromatic it all is. Thank you so much!
@@iximusic Haha....thanks for the correction. I would have tried playing the original typo and been like "NO!! It *_still_* sounds wrong. It's the unknowable progression!" But yeah...I played it that way and it sounds great! Now I feel like a dunce for being so baffled by it for so long. It still sounds iffy when played as power chords...so I think you're right about the single note thing. And I think that's what tripped me up so much. You're doing the lord's work ms. ixi....

one of the interesting techniques korn employ in their layering is mic'ing the bass to record the slaps, in addition to the pickups' output. Gives it that great rattling percussive thing. Also, I highly recommend a side-dive into "big dumb face", wes borland's creative project with his brother and some friends.
Ahhh I've always wondered about the rattling and assumed it was just a product of how low Fieldy tuned his bass but that makes more sense. Thanks!
I love the becoming x album by sneaker pimps
That entire album is a hidden 90s gem.
I love shoegaze and trip-hop more than just about anything....and that album is a perfect mashup of the two. It's got that real street-wise urban thing going on....but it's also dreamy and harmonically rich.
"She's wet and wild....a typical 90s child....she must be a Thelma or Louis....she must be a post-modern...............................................tease."
Sounds like my morning bus ride in highschool! haha! Great series :)! "Mudvayne - Death Bloom" in the next one?
I didn't discover Mudvayne. This track sounds gooood though!
"Clunk" from Bizkit's debut is really good.
I don't know if they kept that up, but I thought it was really innovative.
i LOVE the enthusiasm you have in all of the breakdowns you do!!
I was hooked when I saw all the NiN stuff and these are just fantastic.
We so woulda been friends in high school. 💚
Thumbnail looks my rotation everyday 🫡
A true 90s kid!
Apparently we would have definitely had to hang out back in the day!! Our music tastes are all over the place but so much of the same!! I think it requires a deep appreciation of music in general to have such vastly different tastes in music as one person. Did that even make sense? Ha!
I always come back to Korn, I just love it, It was a part of my childhood and their old stuff I hold so deer : )
I'm a similar age to you and grew up with similar tastes as what you've gone through here... I was a Limp Bizkit fan for a good while and I thought at the time that John Otto (Drums) is very underrated, and I stand by it today 20+ years later...
Sneaker pimps opening. Has the gary numan pleasure principal feel.
Thank you so so much for heaping your nostalgia on my nostalgia and remixing it all up in a magical joy stew. AGAINNNNNNNNNN
Watching this, I just realized that “Freak on a Leash” is the Bohemian Rhapsody of metal slop 🤘🌽
Was about to comment smth like that. It's coming from guitar shredding I think (Steve Vai or Satriani do that kind of things, with vibrato )
I think your videos are slowly working their way through my music library. Thanks for helping me understand and appreciate music more 😊
Sitting hear listening to Ixi review my entire CD collection
Ha!..Spin Spin Sugar is still on my Playlist today..How about Rabbit in the Moon?..The Sarah McLachlan remixes perhaps?😃
Your so, beautiful when you talk music.
Huge deftones fan here and would love to hear your take on some more of their stuff!
lots of nostalgia crossover there! I had all of these back in the day- frequently listen to adrenaline still, Lifter is my alltime favourite deftones song :)
These two videos are lot a whats what of my teens.
You never realized FoaL changed key there??
Agreed!
ua-cam.com/video/HtF5ksQKdBk/v-deo.html
I had totally forgotten about Counterfeit.
you are my musical soulmate
19:50 i think its the left hand lifting off the strings to mute it
so da daX dadaX (x being a mute)
there are a lot of ways to mute stuff, but im pretty sure its just the left hand giving up for a moment hahahahah
Haha I made the same exact face during the GO! on Freak on a Leash. Yes, nostalgia for the Korn
Why does it make our faces do that!
You're so intelligent. I think I love you.
The Counterfeit riff uses natural harmonics on the low string to get those higher overtones, similar to the intro riff in Zero by Smashing Pumpkins
love the fat guitar tone of Munky and Head. an Ibanez Universe 777 detuned a whole step A-D-G-C-F-A-d is the secret sauce behind that low end growl. in the song Fake when Jonathan screams 'Fake' the guitarists just hit all seven strings unfretted. hella fun to play imo;)
The first time John Davis did that wild heavy metal version of scattering was on Life Is Peachy's opener Twist & I still haven't heard any vocalist do anything near as unorthodox as that.
By the way, "those chords" that sound so dissonant in Blind's intro are what Head calls "the Bungle chord" he explains the Bungle chord in this interview ua-cam.com/video/QMdEG1-jY3Q/v-deo.html
Mr Bungle & Korn truly introduced new unique forms of dissonance to western music.
He kills it on Twist, loved that maniacal laugh he throws in there too! Thank you for the link to learn about the Bungle chord!
When you mentioned the Korn chords changing to a more choppy rhythm it reminds me of take a look around, limp bizkits mission impossible 2 track that does s similar thing towards the end
I'm old so blind was the first Korn song I ever heard, for obvious reason lol
I like this, ixi rules
It's funny, because you were obviously in a very similar musical sphere to me growing up, but I must be a little older than you, because for so many of these albums, the main one I connected with was the one right before the one you mention.
Ah, Korn's debut album. That was junior high for me. Good stuff. :D And Deftones Adrenaline. Ooof. Engine no. 9. *Chef's kiss*
The chorus of Engine No. 9 is doooope! It's funny I love every single song on Adrenaline but I can't for the life of me remember which title corresponds to which song.
Deftones encore last month was Lotion and Engine No. 9. So unexpected
Another excellent nostalgia trip. I can't wait for part three when you take a look at Gorecki by Lamb and Endtroducing by DJ Shadow. ;)
Sounds like someone needs to join the monthly listening party on my Patreon WINK WINK We're doing only 90s requests this month ;) ;)
@@iximusic Now there's something I can get on board with.

IAMX is so great. Love Sneaker Pimps…but IAMX takes it one step further
You're a super cool person 😎
You may never see this comment but it's so funny how the intro to the first Korn track is very iconic but also has a loooot of similarities to "Too Many Puppies" by Primus
I noticed the same thing when I listened to Too Many Puppies last week!
Heya have you done any VAST yet? ❤️🙏
I'm not familiar! You can join my Patreon and request a song on the monthly livestream (even if you can't attend live you can watch it later!)
Their song ‘Touched’ I think you would like
@@iximusic Check out pretty when you cry. Like machines of loving grace they weren't all that well known.
@@iximusic thanks for all your amazing videos! I think you would really dig the self titled VAST album 🥰
FYI *all* of the sneaker pimps songs you listened to are remixes (and so is the cover art). "spin spin sugar" is the radio edit, which is basically a completely different song. "6 underground" is the nellee hooper remix, which is pretty subtle.
it got confusing because they re-released the album with band on the cover and three remixes in place of the original tracks. the original cover is just the green PCB. but there are a few copies out there (like the one little indian 200g DMM vinyl) that use the original art with the re-release track listing.
here's the original "spin spin sugar" ua-cam.com/video/id4splHS8vM/v-deo.html
Gotcha. These are the versions I know!
@@iximusic they're all good!
GO!

26:16 I think those are guitar harmonics
I was born in the mid 90’s but I love late 90’s and early 00’s music, I’m one of those “born in the wrong decade” types. I should’ve been born in the mid 80’s so I could’ve been a teenager in the late 90’s and early 00’s.
Also you seem very much like you were a raver in the 90’s.
17:57 😂
@26:08 on the limp bizkit guitar sound
Basically reminds me of Stabbing Westward - Save yourself ua-cam.com/video/5NZsCYOM4j0/v-deo.html
Lets see the third part of this 'arc', thanks ixi
Hey Ixi when you do some more Deftones tunes be sure to check out their cover of the Cocteau Twins song "Wax & Wane" it's on "B-sides and Rarities" i think B)
ok!
The notes are: Bb Gb D Db, then Bb Gb Eb D
I actually don't think they're chords, it's just sounds like one note to me.
@@iximusic You are....the best!
Going to try this on my guitar the moment I get home.
The single note thing must be part of what screwed my mind up so much. That and how chromatic it all is.
Thank you so much!
Oh shit, typo! Bb Gb D Db, then Bb Gb* Eb D
@@iximusic Haha....thanks for the correction. I would have tried playing the original typo and been like "NO!! It *_still_* sounds wrong. It's the unknowable progression!"
But yeah...I played it that way and it sounds great!
Now I feel like a dunce for being so baffled by it for so long. It still sounds iffy when played as power chords...so I think you're right about the single note thing. And I think that's what tripped me up so much.
You're doing the lord's work ms. ixi....
Sneaker Pimps was so good. I loved that album. Are you a Zero 7 fan? When I hear your piano analysis I think of Zero 7
Love the video. Check out Mudvayne if you like a really good bassist. The rest of the band is also great. Also check out Tool if you like an awesome drummer.
could you do some tool? or have you already?
I did a 5 (yes five) hour livestream analyzing Aenima once: ua-cam.com/video/BwBJ_a-PASI/v-deo.html
I also have a Lateralus (song only) analysis on my Patreon:www.patreon.com/posts/57476858
I want to do more Tool here on the channel - it's a big undertaking and the Tool fans can be merciless so I gotta be on top of my game haha. I was thinking about focusing on the harmonies & melodies since there's so much great content out there already on their odd meters.
@@iximusic i found it! i knew it had to be in there somewhere! and it was! lol
Would you do a video on Primus?
funny thing you say that about the blind intro, they "stole" it from primus - too many puppies
that and blind was originally written by Jonathans old band
with guns in their hands
