Fascinating (and logical) - I recently took 5 different 7 irons (same head, different shaft) to the range looking for ‘the best one’ - now I know why I didn’t find one!

You hit the nail on the head, Stu. I have a driver that was fitted for me almost 5 years ago (I'm do was a new fitting for all clubs except my putter this year). My golf swing has changed alot since then: I'm a better ball striker, use my levers and the ground better. A couple of years ago, I started hitting my driver all over the place, expecially a slice. I could not feel the club head and did not know where it was in my swing. I added some weight to the head with tape and started feeling the club head again and "magically," I was able to hit my driver better. Adding weight to the club helped me, not necessarily the shaft but the swing weight. Cheers.

Changing the weight of a club is powerful stuff my friend! Glad you found it helped. Best wishes Stu

Hey Stuart- good coaching! exceptional clarity! Most golfers are hypnotized by the "marketed" distance ideology. The current narrative is increasing speed- the formula is speed= distance over time, you can change the speed by varying both distance and time. You are introducing mass which is closer to the truth as the formula is force= mass times acceleration. In order to hit the ball further you have to accelerate through the ball. Your video on tempo where you demonstrate slowing the backswing without pausing and swinging as fast as you can to the finish will create acceleration. Swinging as fast as you can to impact creates speed! Trackman data shows speed at impact.
The biggest confusion in hitting the ball further is understanding which formula you are using to measure the effect of distance. Each formula has variables combining the variables to give the individual the best result should be the sole purpose of the swing coach and clubfitter.
There is a visible distinction between force and speed. Troy Mullins- force. Martin Borgmeier- speed.

Not to get off track but yet similar in terms of "weight"; I've been teaching my 5yo grandson carpentry this last year. While hammers dont 'flex' per sey, I had him try different weighted hammers so he could drive a nail square on the nail head. In his case, a heavier hammer (within reason) allowed him to load himself better and allow the head of the hammer to do the work whereas with a lighter hammer, his body didnt allow the hammer to deliver the blow with out trying manipulate the hammer at a hight speed. Basically, he got out of control. So what im saying is i find it fascinating how other things can and does in concept can be applied to the golf swing as it relates to this video as well. And yes 😊, we're working on his golf swing.

Fabulous insights and absolutely is the same. Loading the system is crucial to the right amount, too light, too heavy poor output. Thanks for sharing! Best wishes Stu

During my practice this winter, having different sets with different shafts has stuck out like a sore thumb. I’m something of an equipment nerd and have found where that weight is in the shaft and the balance point affects what I’m trying to achieve with my practice. Weight at the bottom end of the shaft destroys my path. Btw, the drill with the ball on the toe line and working the handle back to it has worked wonders! I’m looking to re-tool somehow this year and through your channel and Precision Golf, I feel more prepared than ever to know what to look for and ask proper questions. I’ll shut up now and get back to my practice. Warm regards young man. NWH

Really interesting video. Long Drive golfers are now mostly playing very flexible shafts rather than super stiff shafts, but they only need to hit the fairway one out 8 shots.
I know from fitting, at Precision Golf of course!!, I am fairly sensitive to shaft weight, but less so on flex. This makes more sense to me because of the video.

Most are surprised by their sensitivity to shaft weight Justin, we are all pretty sensitive my friend. Best wishes Stu 😊

Good explanation of flex! I'm a senior golfer with a iron speed around 70mph I just ordered my first set of irons with senior flex. I have always played R flex and steel shafts, so I will see what the difference is. I also got the graphite shafts so I'm sure I'm in for a big change, hopefully will be the right choice for me!

Great explanation of shaft flex/weight and how they work together. There are training clubs out there like the GForce with a super flexible shaft but weight matched to a typical (I assume) male golfer. Is there any benefit to training with these clubs?

    • @GoodGolfCoaching

Hi David - I would rather golfers swing a club that feels heavy and a club that feels light. All the flex in a training aid serves little if no purpose at all in my opinion. Best wishes Stu 😊

    Nice one Stu
Does light or heavy weight ..affect the shafts kick point characteristics ..for higher or lower trajectory? Cheers mate

Hey Graham - head will affect the flight characteristics way more than the shaft to be honest Graham, but the shaft definitely will have an affect too. Best wishes Stu 😊

    Good morning Stuart.
I know that when you talk about loading the club, the wrist bend.
But what I felt yesterday was to make sure that the club was solid in my grip and to make sure that the club handle didn't swim in the back swing or down swing.
    Am I thinking correctly

Absolutely Pat - you’d never want a grip moving in the hold. Sounds very positive. Best wishes Stu 😊
