I've noticed that quite a few of you actually enjoyed my journeys into the not-so-distant past as far as graphics cards are concerned.
So today we'll be heading back to the year 2015 when NVIDIA's GTX 960 launched. It wasn't the most powerful GPU to begin with, even back then, but I still remember it was advertised to handle 1080p gaming at a solid 60 FPS without any issues.
Today I will try to run somewhat modern games with this 8-year old GPU. My objective is to achieve a smooth framerate at 1080p.
Unfortunately, clearly those 2GB of VRAM my GTX 960 comes equipped with will hinder our options in modern gaming.
But will we still witness better results than we've previously seen with the GTX 780 and 770... or is the 960 totally useless these days? - Наука та технологія
What were your thoughts on the GTX 960 back when it launched? 🤔😉😁
Were you excited for it or... "meh"? 😅
That 2gb GTX 960 is the exact same card that I was using for about 10 years.
I just upgraded it though because the lack of GPU memory made it difficult to play Hogwarts, and Detroit: Become Human, and most definitely KSP 2.
My specs for now:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 1600 3.2ghz (turbo 3.6ghz)
RAM: 16gb (2x8gb)
GPU: Nvidia GTX 970 4gb (Formerly GIGABYTE GTX 960 2gb)
PSU; Thermaltake 650w... (at least 600w, I don't remember specifically.)
The GTX 960 is nvidias last windows xp supported gpu. It makes for an unstoppable Retro gaming gpu.
So true!
Not only that, it's from the last generation of Nvidia GPUs that support native analog output, so it's excellent for CRT displays.
Just installed gtx 970 to my XP machine. All you need is few lines in info file.
Still rocking this GPU in my 9 year old gaming PC I built in college.
Same bro
Same here
Same here. Gonna upgrade to rtx 4080 ryzen 7 7800x3d 32gb ddr5 ram tomorrow tho lol, gonna be an insane upgrade.
@@PahEz your mobo can handle all that? I can't really upgrade since i'd have to get a new one so I'm just waiting to do an entire new build eventually. Maybe reuse just the case
@@Tribuneoftheplebs no, I'm buying a completely new prebuilt pc for 3000 euros. The old msi pc I have now ( gtx 960 2gb i5-4460 8gb ddr3 ram ) is also a prebuilt pc I bought about 9 years ago for 1200 euros.
My first GPU way back in 2015. The start of something glorious. I actually still have it and I refuse to sell it or let it go even though all of that first build is pretty much gone. I actually have the 4Gb version from MSI the Twin Frozer. It came with a free copy of The Witcher 3!
you are the ONLY reviewer that runs and test games on 900p. thank you for this. people dont realize in online gaming 900p helps out a alot.
Thank you for appreciating this minor detail. :D
So this week, after years of not owning a pc, i bought one from a friend with a 960 in it and was so surprised to see the latest driver being like 1 week ago 2024
I got an old Veineda Gtx 960 4Gb and with my i5 9600K, getting 60 smooth on high-med graphics on Forza 5. I love this gpu
I was pretty confident about this video as I am still going with a GTX 960 for my main machine, though after checking I did notice that I actually have 4 GBs of memory so that probably helps a bit. I probably would have upgraded to something newer if it wasn't for the GPU shortage driving prices waaaay up. I basically total upgraded my machine around 18 months ago.
Built a FX 8350 and 960 in 2015- it’s now in the garage and work great still. windows XP and a lot of retro games. When friends and family come over - it gets used a lot. Best PC purchase I’ve ever made based off of longevity and use.
You speak very lowly of the 960 when in reality, although in low settings, it offers a very playable experience in all titles, and it being very cheap nowadays that's more than enough for a lot of people. Also, of course 1080p and 768p it will look worse on a 1440p display, but on a native 1080p it's not so bad.
I paired a 960 4gb, i5 4670k, 16gb 1600mhz RAM and new SSD with a 24" native 1366×768 monitor and I was actually surprised how well the old dogs hunted. Dont forget, most of the 960s are fantastic overclockers. Slap some new thermal paste on it and overclock the Core and Memory to your hearts desire. Nothing wrong with an older card if it plays the games you play at the resolution you like to play at. I for 1 could play and compute @ 1366×768 native with no complaints and I normally play at 1440p.
24" native 1366×768 monitor??? where to find this type of monitor? by saying, i am also implying that native 768p resolution not downscaling
@@sohailkabir8030 literally found it at a pawn shop for like $25 it claims it's is 1366×768 native. I tried running it in 1080p and it didn't scale properly. It is a Samsung I believe.
On the cpu fx 8350, using a gforce gtx 960 WILL STREAM IN 4K as long as the monitor or tv is hooked up. The settings changes into the UHD list.
Keep hearing "we're above VRAM... above VRAM... exceeding VRAM..." but all by just barely .5GB or so, would love to see how the 4GB would do in those places.
i had 960 in 4gb, it must be a pain to have only 2 gb
My first Video Card that I have purchased brand new. The memories of playing Overwatch with it was the best.
Would you stick to windows 10 or 11 for old components such as gtx 960?
Impressive results from Borderlands 3
I used a laptop with a GTX 960m, it served me since 2016, now, 8 years later I built my ever first desktop with an 7600x and rtx 4070 ti
It was given to me by my brother and now I'm still using it for my AM5 PC
hai.what software did you use for show fps etc?
Bought a GTX 970 few days ago for my 'ultimate' Win XP build. Tested it in main computer and latest drivers worked well. But yeah, there was some 'strangeness' with 900 series. 960 has supported XP drivers while 970 and above don't. Easily fixable though.
I got a question and I hope anyone could help me with that. So I got a GTX 960 4GB and a i7-4790 3.60GHz, I don't have the kind of money atm to really upgrade to anything insanely high rn but I really wanna play two games for which the recomandations say I need atleast a GTX 1060. And those two games are Resident Evil Village and the Resident Evil 4 Remake. Is it possible to play these two games with a 960 and to get decent fps?
So glad I've still got the 4GB EVGA GTX 960 SSC for that VRAM advantage with older games, where the extra 2GB of VRAM costed as much (with P&P) as the optional extra full metal backplate of the backplate-less 2GB version, while also coming with the backplate as standard as a bonus.
It's great for maxing out Windows XP/8.1(+Classic Shell Start) dual boot retro builds without having to depend on funky modded drivers.
P. S. Also the last mid-range x60 card to still support SLI, if you're into that sort of thing, for those few titles that'll actually benefit from it, for that "just because it looks awesome in the case, especially with the light up EVGA hard SLI bridge" factor, rather than for practicality, where a significantly more powerful single 1080 would otherwise make more sense.
P. P. S. The GM206 GPU of the 960 was also the first from nVidia to support HDCP 2.2, putting it ahead of the likes of even the Maxwell based Titan-X of the time, at least in that regard.
I've played RDR2 on 900p with Low settings and medium/high textures on a 960 2GB It was giving me 30+ FPS all the time the game was very playable and graphics were also not looking that bad
i have the 4gb version from evga, and it was certainly a good card
My first GPU
Nowadays, Nvidia's T600 has almost same performce with GTX960.
But has more VRAM.
i have the same graphic card with 6 gb vram playing f1 2022 very well , really worth
Question: Works geforce gtx 960 which is natively pcie 3.0 on PCI Express 5.0? It should?!
Yes, it works as long as you find compatible drivers for your desired Windows OS choice, be it 10 or 11. It does work on older versions of Windows or Linux, with the aproppiate drivers.
Older PCI-e videocards can work with newer PCI-e motherboards.
But sometimes newer PCI-e videocards cannot work with older motherboards. Such things happen due to bad PCI-e backwards compatibility implementation from the UEFI-bios on the motherboard, requiring a safestrap method to display graphics, while processing 3D tasks.
Would be nice to clarify that you are using a 2gb card. Didn't notice till midway. Should have used the 4gb card. Great video though
Thank you!
If I remember correctly, I did disclose that. :)
call this me turning on my pc 🔥
I have this gpu in my old laptop, but with 4gb memory.
Still have a 1060 3gb around from the year after.
Me in 2023 with intel hd graphics 2000...
I played league on this card without issue right up until my mobo diedlast month!
its good, only problem is coil whine
Still rocking a gtx960 4GB in 2024 💪💪
are u thinking t o upgrade?? u have 4gb its good but this one is 2gb
i still have my GTX 950 2GB Gainward Phantom...
Bought a used PC with a GTX960. I got full system shutdown on ever ego shooter. Escape from Tarkov in Raids randomly. When i enter the hideout after 5 seconds system shutdown. Same on Counterstrike 2. Even in League of Legends i get sometimes full system shutdown.
This is a sub-par card in modern day no matter what anyone says.
could anybody possibly tell me if this graphics card is better than the amd ryzen 5 3400g's built in graphics?
I'm gonna go with YES. It has much more raw power that the AMD APUs. That being said, those APUs are pretty slick if you don't have room for a dedicated GPU.
@@mtcoiner7994 thanks dude, this probably saved me from getting a gpu that has more power than i need and saved my bank
@@Like.a.boss.Absolutely Yes, I got mine for 40 bucks and with my i5 9600K can handle games rlly good at 1080p or 900p.
Still using gtx 960...playing skyrim special edition with it
Same
I have the graphics card but my computer is so slow why? It can run Valorant but takes forever to load up and even just surfing the web!
Sounds like a CPU or RAM issue, possibly also a slow hard drive if you arent rocking a SSD.
idk bro if u testing multiplayer games try playing online espeically with battlefield games it will give different result
I’ve used an gtr 960 since i got my first pc and it sucks in fortnite i barely get 30 fps (keep in mind i use an office pc thats 8 years old)
U can actually get away with medium on fh5
I mean as long as it can run at least 1 game I'm good 😂😂 that's how broke I am 😭
mine is only alive and kicking because she is the 4gb version
i have the gtx 960 and get 9 to 20 fps on COD MW3 the new one
Quite the champ. 😂
in you play csgo, valorant or LOL this gpu run perfectly I use it
get a 580 & njoy
Get a 1070, it's better, & njoy
@@AlfaPro1337 can you get a new 1070 for like $70? guess not...
@@adminmovie Used, slightly more, but it still beat the 4/580, since it has a longer gaming life.
Considering AMD pitted the RX 4/580 against the 970/80, 1070 (the proper upgrade from 970/80), and 2x4/580 against 1x1080.
@@AlfaPro1337 Thats not true at all. 580's, on average, perform better now than they did when they launched. They have a great physical longevity. And so many people are moving to linux, regardless what people want to say, that the 580 will continue to be relevant long after the 1070 is a shelf only piece. I used to sing the praises of NVidia, they simply dont deserve it any longer.
@@kborak I would say, it depends on the apps and games, had both of them (for some pc builds, i made) and in some the 1070 was much better performing, than the 580 8gb i had. In some they both seemed to have similar performance (maybe a cpu bottleneck, idk, tested them with a R5 3600X). But getting an RX 580 8GB for around 70 $/€/£ isn't actually a bad idea for a cheap build for gaming or something similar. They are both still great performing cards (even though the GTX 1070 should be sold for less nowadays, than what people want to sell them for, then it would be really worth it, to look for one).
Just got one of these for 20$ off marketplace, threw it in my old Mac Pro, it’s a wannabe gamer pc lol
if u optimize ur pc and tweak it u can get way more fps on my gt 710 i can run most games on 60+ fps
but it’s just that i have no vram
Nah man just play lfd2
So you didn't test any 2023 games, lol
