That's not why Jesus was riding a donkey. Long story short: back in ye olden days (1500-BCE), in regions now known as Middle East, rising a donkey was a part of a ritual of appointing a ruler. Distant memories of such traditions survived to the 1st century CE. Jesus was riding into Jerusalem as a king of Israelites, thus fulfilling one of the messianic prophecies.

I'd hazard that they are just really desperate for their piece of the grift; they want to believe that if they follow the guidelines someone like him lays out, that they can flash their sneakers too. And they won't have to feel bad about it- like we wouldn't be EVIL rich, this would be riches because God WANTS me to have good things! I think i can explain it from my aunts point of view: when she was growing up in nigeria, the assumption is that all christians live in poverty. It was something she was made fun of for in college. When these prosperity gospel guys came aaround, she was just blown away by the idea of a christian leader who wasnt starving.
Wheraas here and now, rich powerful christians are a fime a dozen. And blaming things on god is a simple solution for people, especially desperate people in dire financial straits. Thats why you may see lots of immigrant communities really into this kind of thing.
i wouldn't be surprised if megachurches and prosperity churches target immigrant communities in their outreach because they're a vulnerable population. years ago the MLM herbalife went through a major scandal where it was revealed they recruited immigrants specifically for that reason. people are desperate to make a living and want to believe it when a predatory organization tells them they'll get rich as long as they give up some money first.

So sad. My grandma was diligent in her support of Copeland. All her social security benefits added up to about $1,000 a month. Sometimes she would give up to $200 a month. She would be asked for donations after making a monthly subscription payment. I may not be 100% correct My memories not that great. But she really believed she would be healed too. She didn't even believe it when they told us they came to his inner lungs and she needed hospice she was so shocked because Kenneth had told her that wouldn't happen.

i grew up catholic and although i’ve left , in a very honest church. I was raised to know that these types of pastors are evil and scammers. If these pastors genuinely believe in their religion, I don’t know how they think they’re going to heaven. they are such great examples of religious people who have a one way ticket to hell

They probably know that no one is going to heaven. These guys don’t actually believe in any of this bullshit, but they know that a lot of other people do. Believers are easily manipulated. A lot of them grew up in church and realized how easy of a grift religion is.
Here in Ireland, Catholicism staggers on, with people generally identifying still as Catholic - but because they like the ceremonies and tradition, rather than believing in God etc. As such, and considering the hostility in Ireland towards The Church as an organisation, considering the evil things it got away with for decades here (child sex abuse, murdering babies of single women, etc), in this kind of environment, such pastors find zero opportunity for their cynical grifting. We Do have a few foreign pastors holding very low-key meetings here, but they're invariably for small immigrants gatherings, who are more amenable to the utter, utter shite they're peddling.

I wish I had no morals sometimes. Like scamming the poor and the sick and the elderly with promises of a better future when no one else is helping them and they're desperate is such an easy way to make money and it's so, so profitable. But I could never live with myself for doing it. My pastor refused raises for *YEARS* because there were more important things to spend the money on, and when he finally did accept one, it was just to match inflation. I'm not saying everyone needs to go old school and take a vow of poverty; you can live relatively comfortable in the middle class. But the church's funds should always, always, always be prioritized as to give back to the community they exist in, and you should help EVERYONE regardless of their beliefs/spirituality/lack there of.

Speaking from the perspective of an atheist who spent their entire childhood in a very religious family, I've always liked the image of Jesus a lot. He represents many things that most Christian people reject: humility, rebellion, love for all people including enemies, wisdom, and disdain for people like the pastors of mega-churches
That sentiment is one I see expressed a lot among those who look at the church from without, and as a Christian it is very disturbing. The church needs to take notice of this problem

I grew up in the evangelical church. These people infuriate me so much. They do so much evil. I have seen first hand how people like this manipulate people. It’s tough. And makes me so mad.
I went to a fairly laid-back modern Mennonite church growing up and opted out of organized religion when my parents gave me the choice to attend or not when I was about 13. What I see in these US evangelicals is not Christianity; I'm not even sure this is religion;. It is the antithesis of Christianity. Church minister are supposed to live humbly. Many of them take a vow of poverty and live a very simple and austere life devoted to serving God and the community. When the collection plate came around in my church, the money was used to support the various charitable works and other service to the community,--it's not the "pastor's" money FFS! These "churches" should call themselves anti-Christian: it's closer to accurate. They are the spiritual wing of the Republican party. The police are the muscle crew and Fox news is the ministry of truth;
Their audience needs the money too, they will give money instead of using it to improve their own circumstances. He's taking from really needy people, it should be a crime that result in life in prison and a reallocation of all of his and the churches assets to the people who paid for it all

Because the donations are to the church, not to him explicitly, so he’d have to pay himself to get that money. But I guess it’s possible if he’s asking for donations explicitly to support his lifestyle then he doesn’t need to pay himself? He’s either paying himself and income tax or he’s breaking the law. Well, money laundering would imply money received from illegal activities and spent on legal ones. Or receiving donations isn't illegal. Also, the presenter of this video speaks of embezzlement. I don't think it can be considered that either, since he's pretty much openly saying what he's going to use the money for. It's not like he's lying to them what he's going to do with the money. He's not cooking the books... he states he wants money for a new jet, they give him the money freely, no one is forcing them, and then he uses the money for the stated purpose. It would be an issue if he told them he's going to use them for something else and then buy a jet... but he's telling them the truth about the destination of the funds. They have been informed and they've made the decision it's something worth donating money for.

i grew up as a pastors kid in a very small church (like less than 100 people) & my tata (grandfather) is the head pastor while my dad is the assistant pastor & will eventually take over as the head pastor when my tata retires. being from a small church, it makes sense for people to give to help literally pay to keep the church running but in huge churches like that that are prob already making quite a bit of money from being televised to then manipulate the congregation & at home viewers to give them money and then they have these huge houses, fancy cars, PRIVATE JETS, fancy jewelery etc. instead of putting together ministries to help people in need or donating to charities/shelters that need it it’s just absolutely disgusting. i’m not even a christian personally or believe in god personally but i can see when it is appropriate to ask the congregation for money (ofc there’s scripture about tithing 10% of your income) and when it’s just outright inappropriate and gross.
