We've been getting a great influx of games lately, also by lesser known game companies that are finally combining the best aspects of other games and implementing them all into one. With the most recent and obvious example being Palworld along side Enshrouded.
I have had a great time with both, obviously neither of them are perfect, but they are in early access. LET THEM COOK.
I thought it was a really ingenious that Enshrouded melded RPG and survival elements together. Was a lot of fun doing your own thing with the survival aspect, but when that came to a bit of a plateau, you could start doing quests to further your progression and get to the next peak of the survival aspects.
Really looking forward to the future content with this game.
5:28 what Valheim game did you play? In Valheim, you don't need to eat, you don't need to drink, doing so will just buff you.... like it does in Enshrouded. I agree, this is much more of an RPG than survival game, but I feel like you went a little overboard in drawing distinctions.
Thanks for your commentary. I'd say that even on Early Access release, without the phenomenal financial success of Valheim, this project seems more polished. Hopefully, Enshrouded continues to develop and evolve in ways that positively impact the experience.
Hot take (?): However much one may enjoy it, I'm of the view that Valheim dropped the ball. They had more buzz than any other indie title in recent memory... and wasted it. They still haven't done any development of significance... and while it would be welcome, it's too late - and reflects poorly on the dev team.
Food isn’t required for survival in valheim just strongly recommended 😂
Was really looking forward to this. I personally really loved how the games looks though I can't say much unless I try it.

Don't have it yet, waiting for PC issues to be fixed...
It is a decent enough game. I'd be more impressed if particular materials weren't so tedious to grind...looking at you feathers. Compared to Valheim the world is tiny and instead of being able to farm materials to craft the best stuff in the game you can park a Flame Alter near a gold chest and farm it until you have everything "best". Weak.
Enshrouded feels like a spiritual successor to a much less well known recent Steam early-access game: Frozen Flame, released in 2022. It, too, is a cooperative online multiplayer game about survival, crafting, combat, and exploration in a hand-crafted world. Like Enshrouded, it has skill tree progression with RPG-archetype upgrade paths, blueprint-unlock base construction, and a recipe-unlock crafting system which lets you make a glider for improved traversal. Unlike Enshrouded--but like Valheim--it has a weather system and home-wrecking enemies which force you to repair damage, and which can be mitigated by building protection like a roof or wall.
So why has Enshrouded done about 12x better than Frozen Flame? Having completed the early access portions of both, I think it's primarily because Frozen Flame feels smaller and is less content-rich. Playing at about the same pace in each, I've logged 80 hours in Enshrouded but only 40 hours in Frozen Flame. Enshrouded feels more like Skyrim in terms of finding new content to experience around almost every corner, while Frozen Flame's experiences are fewer in number and more dispersed. Also, while neither game managed to capture the tension-ratcheting nature of Vahleim's survival system, Enshrouded at least comes close with its shroud mechanic where a timer starts when you enter a shrouded area and you will die unless you leave before time runs out. Frozen Flame never had us feeling like we were truly struggling to survive.
One complaint I have about each of these games is their AI systems. Each has a very limited number of non-hostile NPCs to interact with, and the NPCs only exist to sell you items and recipes, or to set you on a quest. This is normal for small teams, who don't often have the resources for complex dialog trees, faction tracking, and intricate quest paths. The bigger sin, I believe, is with enemy AI which ranges from the trivial 'predator runs toward player and attacks' or 'prey runs away from the player', to the only-slightly-less trivial 'ranged enemy attacks from a slight distance' or 'melee enemy blocks and dodges sometimes'. The closest I've seen any of them come to showing group-AI behaviours is when a shaman heals wounded allies. I think this issue will keep occurring in games like this until someone publishes a generally scalable NPC AI library/tool which isn't difficult to understand or to incorporate into a game engine. Small studios rely on affordable, off-the-shelf solutions.
Overall, Enshrouded was worth the $40 to me and the folks I play with. Frozen Flame probably isn't worth the $37 they're charging. But with hundreds of hours played, I can say with confidence that Valheim is absolutely worth $23 on Steam right now.
