  • Running your vacuum with a bag greatly extends it's life, also changing the filter to a washable one will save money in the long run especially if you use it alot like I have mine.

    I have several dogs that shed and I have noticed that whenever the hose gets clogged with fur it occurs at the hose connector as it enters the Shop Vac. That slight reduction in diameter caused by the connector entering the hose will be enough to create a pinch point. My solution is to use PVC pipe large enough to allow the hose to fit inside instead of outside. The point is to never have the dirt passing from a larger diameter into a smaller diameter. That is where the clog will happen every time.

    Thanks. Those style shopvac bags are awesome, by the way. I recommend those in a heartbeat. They pick up wet and dry at the same time, and can be dumped and washed out, to be used again. as long as you don't rip 'em.

    I use an air compressor to clean the filter(s) when I salvage them. I, typically, change the filters about once a year. I have two Shop Vacs: one mainly for dry pickup and one for wet and dry. They are great machines. I'd recommend all households have at least one of them for heavy-duty chores.

    3:09 HINT: Since OEM Shop-Vac filters are now hard to find, care must be taken when selecting an aftermarket replacement filter. Filtering capability aside, aftermarket SV filters come packaged in one of three ways: 1) Cap required [provided]; 2) Cap required [NOT provided]; or 3) Cap NOT required [press fit design].
    Usually, the instructions provided with the 3rd type say to discard the cap. Instead, I highly recommend keeping the original cap on-hand just incase you decide to try the 2nd type above.

    Desided to put bag in instead of the cartridge for my ten yr old 12 gal, 5hp. But it was my understanding that both shouldn't be used at the same time because it would be the same as useing a severely dirty cartridge as the motor would get overworked and overheated, and also the suction flow is reduced as if useing a severely dirty cartridge. First video i have seen useing both! I plan on useing bag and or cartridge for fine particles as in ashes and dust, therfore suction flow is already going to be on a stain. But useing both, I'm going to investigate more but nice video thank you.

      I dont doubt it man, the bags are great, the bags also add another layer of filtration, which are alot easier on your allergies as shop vacs are inherently not the best at filtering their own exhaust. The bags make a night and day difference.

  • @2010stoof

    FYI they sell the better bags too (more expensive) "high efficiency" bags which catch more dust in the bag (mine are yellow) and are suited for finer dust (says drywall dust and Ash and cement dust on package). I use them all the time after using the one regular one that came with mine and still ended up with a ton of dust in the canister and on the filter. Now I use the yellow all the time. Makes the canister filter work less. I don't use mine all that much so the extra cost doesn't bother me and the more filtration the better.

    Mine lasted 22 years. 10 gallon 4.5 horsepower. Go figure i let somwone use it for dust and it fried. The power switch, thermal rod, and bushing all need to get replaced. Bypassing the thermal safely is a pain and the bushing is getting replaced with a bearing that magically fits.

  • @bronzechicken4437

    I get mine generally from scrappers when the switch goes bad, got one now, less than a year old, stone dead, looked new in the bucket when I got it for the whole price of $1. I generally invest in the XL hose for mine, most of mine have a 2 inch hose (I think), and it is great, I never clog those

    • @hanksgarage_
      @hanksgarage_  8 років тому

      +BronzeChicken Yea I think I have clogged the hose on this one a handful of times, saw that large hose when I was at lowes, might pick one up or hopefully I can find one in the trash. Ive only ever found one complete shop vac in the trash before it was half the size of this one, the scrappers rip the motors out of them when they are thrown to the curb.

    What a great video Hank. Maybe you can answer this question since apparently no one on Google knows.
    Does attaching an extension cord to the factory cord of a shop vac decrease the suction of the shop vac?
    I know that incorrect cord is possible fire hazard etc but I'm only interested in the suction power as the shop vac we have has only a 6ft cord which is useless.
    Thanks!

    • @hanksgarage_
      @hanksgarage_  3 роки тому

      No not at all. You’re good using an extension cord

    • @GraemePayne1967Marine
      @GraemePayne1967Marine Рік тому +1

      You are good using an extension cord PROVIDED it is appropriately rated for the load. A quick rough guide is that the extension cord must not be thinner than the cord on the vacuum. A thicker cord (LOWER wire AWG size number) is better. Thicker wire can carry the same current (amps) for a greater distance. If the extension cord ever gets warm to the touch, it is either too long, or the wires are not thick enough.

    • @gammondog

      Look up the cyclone collectors that are hooked up between the shop vac and the nozzle. The centrifugal force created by the air vortex pulls most of the debris out of the air stream and into a separate bucket. Some of it does make it to the paper bag in the vac, but the change over time is greatly increased. I wouldn't bother unless I was running a lot of saws and had to vac up huge amounts of saw dust though. It takes a long time for me to fill a bag so I don't mind dropping a "saw buck" on a fresh one. ;-)

      Some models, the curved part does not remove like his model in the video. You just slip the bag over it and up against the tank wall.

    Do you need to remove the bag and debris before using the shop bag blower feature?

    do you need to use both filters when using the shop vac? can you use just the bag filter or the circular filter and not both?

      Yes you do, you can use without the bag, but not the filter.

    I have a little problem, i bought a Shop vac 12 gallons and 4.5 hp and the filter bag is the same as you but i can't put it as easy as you do in the video, it has a kind of tube and the instructions are general for all the versions.

      You need to kind of force it in I doubt you can break it by hand

      Is it the shop vac micro? I have one and am struggling to know what cartridge filter to get when I want one. I am using bags and the foam thing.
      I think that you just push the bags on the inside tube.

    Great video. When do you know it is time to change the bag? Thanks

      Lift the top off and I change around half way full or when performance degraded enough

    Nice video but I have an older QPV 12gal 3.5 h.p. vac that needs a new filter and bag. How do I know what size filter to buy? Do we measure the old filter by outside or inside diameter? My old filter seems to be 7 3/4 inches wide (outside diameter) and 6 1/2 inches tall. Is this a common size or an oddball? I've spent a lot of time online looking and was shocked to discover no one offers information on how to measure a filter and order it (for the off-beat brands). Maybe I just need to carry my old filter into Lowes and say: "Got anything like this."
    Thanks

      Dale Hammond you will need to take model number of your vacuum and put into google. That should get you part numbers for what ya need.
