Works great!!! I used to use a portion of an old pair of my wife's panty hose. Worked great as well, but I was getting tired of chasing her around the house to get them. 🤣
Thumbs up? This deserves a high five bro. The information is highly valuable to my business. We charge +$30min. pwr detail just as a starter upcharge due to pet hair. This helps me cover increased work time, specialized tools, and usually a full cleaning or even trashing our Ridgid blue FILTERS! Smart affordable hack that pays dividends. Ty kindly sir!
Absolutely love this tip! I even already have some for my pool, never thought of using the filter socks this way!
Cool hack.
I using corrugated pipe sock for decades.
Today retail price around $30 for 100 ft.
Years ago it was $18.
I saw another video on this a while back. The guy used a windspeed thing to measure the flow with and without the sock. I don't remember the numbers but there wasn't much different when new/clean. He sucked up a half bucket of sawdust from his table saw with and without. After vacuuming the sawdust, he measured again and the one with the sock decreased a good bit but was still working pretty good but not as good as the one without. Then he took the sock off, shook the sawdust off the sock but not the filter and tested it again. It was better than the filter without the sock. The sock clogged quicker but was easy to clean and then the performance was better than the somewhat dirty filter. He then cleaned the naked filter and tested. The cleaned sock/filter combo was still better than the naked cleaned filter, not by much but still better.
I think the result is that the sock caught most of the junk but some fine stuff still got through to "clog" the regular filter. The naked filter had to catch everything and therefore "clogged" deeper and was harder to clean. Of course, the test was just a guy in a garage with a sample size of 1 of each. Also, his cleaning method was to bang the filter inside the bucket to knock off the loose stuff so not scientific but I think there is probably some merit to using the sock. Personally, I have a Dustopper cyclone before the shop vac that works great but it's definitely not a portable as a filter sock.
You can also throw those around the end of the intake hose where it attaches to the shop vac and use it like a cloth vacuum bag. Just toss it when you're finished, give it a shot
That is a great tip! And you could probably do the same for the output valve. My mini will suck in dirt on one end and spit it out on the other end if I'm not careful!
Freaking genius Josh! 👏🏾
Hack of the year so far!
I hate when I have to clean my filter but this is so smart. Buying these today.
Thanks man! 👊🏾
You bet!!!
Those pool socks are a game changer I've been using them for about 3 years I was using stockings before that both on my vacuum filter & my cabin filters they're Awsome
I like your idea - easier and better than what I do. I take off the top section and leave the bucket, then I connect the existing hose to exit port of the shopvac and use it as a blower (instead of using the air compressor). It blows out all the dust and stuff in the filter, but creates a dust cloud. All that just to maintain a clean filter, your way is better. A 30 pack of pool socks will last me a long time, but a drywall installer may go through a 30 pack every week.
Great Hack. I have used Filter socks on my shop vac and my Lawn mower air filter when doing leaves in the fall
I just picked up these filter socks, definitely looking forward to it. Also picked up one of those rip extractors and I'm excited to use it
SO glad I found your video!!! I am cleaning a house that must have had a pack of dogs living in it. Filthy. I have already trashed my filter but this will be great for round 2,3,4, 5, etc. THANKS!
Genius idea! I just bought some today and will be using it tomorrow
Great tip Josh! I vacuum my shop vac filters with my whole house vac to extend their lifespan. I am buying those sleeves right now!!
I do the same with a spare vacuum I have
Always Killing it with the great tips. appreciate chya
Very nice. Got to get me some for sure. Thanks Josh!
Absolutely ingenious! Great hack.
Awesome tip, thanks Josh 👍😁
A 5in bolt 2 spacer and a nut along with a drill can clean that filter! Not 100% but plenty! Take the bolt (that fit through the filter hole put one spacer through the bolt, slide the bolt through the filter then put the other spacer on the other side, then put the nut on the bolt tighten to filter! Then insert the bolt into your drill chuck tighten then turn the drill on! Just make sure your outside when you turn the drill on. Centrifugal force will spin the dirt out of the filter.
It's centripetal force. The other thing is a fictitious term invented by engineers.
@@tanker242you need to look that up. You are wrong
If you do that, wear a respirator even if outside as that’s some fine nasty particles going everywhere. I would recommend the sock over this approach. Although it would be cheaper and work. Your lungs and eyes just won’t like it.
Yes by far a great idea for air breathing quality & cost 😮effective convenience!
A open cell foam works better. Simply pull off the open cell foam and knock off the dirt and blow it out. You can make your own by buying sheat of 1/2 foam and ether sew of glue together. This will extend the life of your filter. For the ultimate hack, attach a bagless set up from a junked vacuum and use this for your intake. This way you just empty the dirt catcher. I wonder why this setup is not used more for shop vacs?
Another great hack thanks Josh you are the man
I like to keep moisture away from the upper portion of the vacuum when cleaning. I use an old paint brush or buy the Harbor Freight two buck brush and clean all the dirt and dust from the top of the vacuum. It does just as good a job. The pool sock is great, better than the bag you find out there.
Excellent advice. Thank you very much!!!
Thanks for the tip Josh… I just ordered them 👍
I have a shop vac connected to my sandblasting cabinet for dust collection. I tried this hack, already doubled the time before I need to clean it out. Great tip!
Awesome!
Great tip, surprised to see you using a factory hose after your recommendation to upgrade
Awesome hack. Thanks Josh.
Very good hack josh I’m ordering right now thanks 😊
I love this idea! I've used grade 90 or 100 cheesecloth, like the cheapest filter on earth, as prefilters for my air purifier, fans, and even as extra help in my vacuum cleaner. You buy them in huge sheets or you can get them in small sheets that are hemmed up, for straining. They are washable and durable. Literally thousands of uses for cheesecloth. But I like the simplicity of these little sleeve socks. Great idea!
So close to 100k! Congrats!
Great tip! Simple, yet effective. Just added to my Amazon cart :)
Glad it was helpful!
I use a cut off of a sweat paint leg over the filter and rubber bands to hold it on. ( ankle opening at the bottom ) One old sweat paints equal two pre-filters . This works well for me and the paper filter never gets completely plugged. The saw dust falls off the paint leg when the vacuum is off and it gets rolled around. Blowing it/ shaking it clean is easy.
Awesome tip, I will definitely purchase some.
I'm guessing that most shop vacs go to the dump with the original filter inside !
The skinner sock is an excellent idea as is a filter bag.
What I do is but a couple yard of lightweight, "Pelon" from the yard goods shop and cut it to size to make my own filers.
Overlap the ends and fasten with 2 or 3 rubber bands. Works great !
I run a never clog bag over my filter . Don't have to change out when going from dry to liquid. It designed for my old Pullman Holt but I use a small bungee for my vacmaster . Have run the same filter in the Pullman for 10 plus yrs and 3 yrs on my vacmaster.
Great tip! Definitely doing this on my vacuums!!
What's up J! I live in the area of you and you detailed my girlfriend's Grand Cherokee! Cool seeing you here!
Great video. An tips . Could be really useful for when doing those dirty dirty cars 👍 am gana start doing at right away
Fantastic tip Josh. Thanks.
Great tip for dry filters. Was curious if you've tried the Multi fit wet & dry filter. Bought five years ago. When dirty, hose off in 5 gallon bucket and let dry overnight. Just giving you another option.
Quick and easy tip. Thanks. Ordered using your affilliate links of course.
Awesome, thank you!
Thank you Josh greatly appreciate your video I definitely ordered those skimmer socks.
I wonder if you can do a video how to remove cigarette odor from a vehicle I seen some videos on UA-cam with ozone generator and leave it in your vehicle. But if you have any tips and tricks that would be awesome. Thanks again happy new year.
AWESOME wonderful video!! Thank you!!
Great idea!! I was just shopping for new filters and they are not cheap.
Great tip josh
Back in the mid-late 1980's I worked in a company with a clean room. We would get big boxes of light fabric disposable hairnets. Used them the same way as this guy.
Very good idea and information Josh!
Thanks!
Great video thanks for the tip. Just ordered some socks.
It works...okay. I used a degreaser to clean out my 16 gallon Craftsman ShopVac, put on a brand new filter, and put on a pool skimmer filter sock listed in the links. I vacuumed up sand and dirt on my garage floor and on my terrace (made of pavers). When I finished I opened the canister and there was a lot of sand and dirt on the filter sock, but when I took the sock off there was still a significant amount of sand and dirt on the filter (enough I had to remove the filter and knock it several times to get the stuff out). Having the sock on there was definitely better than not and I will continue to use one, but the filter was not untouched and will have to be knocked after each use. Maybe because of the amount of sand vs dust, I don't know.
Looks to be a better product than the paper type sleeves, thanks for sharing
Two words. GREAT TIP!
Thanks for the tip, this looks great! When you said, "Bingo, Bango," it reminded me of Mike Sexton (RIP) commentator from WPT that used to say "Bingo, Bango, Bongo" Anyway thanks again, gonna get some of these, my shopvac filter is full of dust and I even have a Harbor Freight cyclone running in front of it.
Fantastic Tip!
Great job friend wrap your filter with kitchen towel then use your sock also filter bag
Dude, YOU ROCK. Tysm!!
I have been covering my pool filters and shop vac filters for years. I also have an air compressor with a nice long hose. Take the filter and the hose outside and blow out the filter from the inside and outside (just make sure what is blown out of the filter is NOT drifting towards your house!). Also, be sure to use and N95 face mask because you have NO idea what's the fine particulates will do to unprotected lungs! I wash each pool filter sock (in the washer with a load of dark clothing) and rotate through the pool filter socks. The shop vac filters and pool filter socks generally last at least five years. My house is 115 years old and I do a full attic to basement vac every year, use my shop vacs (I have three) for cleaning my vintage Sprite 1975 holiday trailer, clean my Chev Equinox, and then I put the hose on the BLOW end and use it as a leaf blower (MUCH more quiet than a gas leaf blower). I love my shop vacs! lol
Great idea... I recently bought a new Craftsman shop-vac that has the inside bag like the older model vacuums (which I still have and refuse to trade in for a bagless vacuum)...
After watching this video (and others pertaining to shop-vacs), I bought the same brand of the 30 pk of pool filters, for 11.99 on Amazon...
Before I use it, I'm also going to buy a muffler/filter for the exhaust end...
I WAS going to buy a blower but, thanks to your comment, reminded me that my shop-vac has the same capability... So, thank you again for the money you just saved me!!
~from a female that's tired of lazy men in her life, hence, has an ever-growing list of tools.
Very nice!! Thanks!
Great tip 👍🏻
Hi! Thanks for the hack! Any links on an adapter for how I can connect my shop vac to the sander and other power tools like my miter saw?
Thanks for this video. I clean pool tables with the same vacuum. I hate to constantly buy new filters.
Man that's a great tip!
Can also use paint filter bags easily found at big box hardware stores.
Great idea!
Great info!
Great idea! Will be doing the same.
Thanks!
You just saved me money. Thank you sir.
Glad I could help!
I have used the sock and it does help the suction, but the sock gets clogged also and fine dust gets through and clogs the filter, but it takes a little longer before one has to take the sock off and blow the dust off the filter.
great tip. do these pool socks work on your larger 14 or 16 gallon ridgid shop vac filter. thanks
Thank you so much!
Great tip
Wow thanks for the get tip 😊
keep in mind filtration is compromised as soon as you're exposing yourself or others to whatever you collected without proper ppe and ventilation. i love it when ppl rave about dyson vacs having hepa filtration all-the-while dumping their collection bin and banging it against the sides of a trash bin without a mask and even inside their kitchen.
great idea, thanks for the tip.
You bet!
How does that compare with vacuum bags? Thanks for the video.
hell yeah. great tip
SMART! THANK YOU! I'm new to a larger shop vac. Should I use those bags? When I scoop up liquids do I leave the filter in and take out the bags? Try not to laugh. I'm willing to ask the tough questions!
Mi filtro tiene 3 años solo lo lavó y lo dejo en sol 20 minutos. El filtro que tu mostraste esta Súper Limpio
Nice tip! Filters are so expensive
I clean my filters with compressed air. Can also us3 a pre vac dustopper on a 5 gallon bucket
Cheaper and more readily available putting blue shop towels over the filter with rubber bands.
Thanks!
Sharp sir 💪🏿
Use your vacuum one hour before sunset for ground bees! No chemicals! Just place in front of hole. Easy to slowly slip toward hole and leave...turn on before or after. I tried this after 2 cans of wasp spray didn't work because of turns in the tunnel. Plus it doesn't kill good insects like honey bees with left over chemicals. Works when they get smashed hitting baffle. Only drawback is your extension cord might not be long enough
If I’m not mistaken, these blue rigid filters are washable I have one that’s five years old and I just wash it with a water hose and let it dry in the sun.
genius move
will it be ok to use these socks on washable hepa filters for the shop vac also when cleaning up after plumbing work?
Show us how you breathe through the sock again 😅🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂
Good video Josh!
Thank you ;)
Thanks for showing us what you would like if you were doing a holdup 😂
Bro. THANK you! 👍
No problem 👍
paper towel wrapped once around the filter element potion secured with rubber bands is a cheaper and more effective option.
Hi there! I couldn't help but notice that you used the pool socks without the bag filter and simply emptied and cleaned the container. So, I'm assuming that using the bag filter isn't necessary if you're already protecting the filter with the pool socks. Am I right? Thanks a bunch!
Hi, I loved your video and have subscribed! I need your advise on what I can do about the scratches on the car interior; glove box or where we kick the driver door open with our shoes, lol! It's slightly textured, so I'm having trouble using my imagination on a process or substance to smooth it out without it being noticeable due to the texture. Thanks, and again, great job! ❤❤❤
That can be tricky. In many cases it’s an actual scratch in the material and heat can be the fix. It will kind of melt the plastic back in to itself but you have to be super careful.
@IMJOSHV - Car Detailing and Reconditioning Tips Thanks for responding! I think if I were to use heat, I would also have to immediately use some kind of stamp in order to keep the same texture of the original grain....you're right, that's going to be tricky. Or.. Do you think I can cover it with the right color matching paint? I really hate the tiny scratches...
Great video.... Do the skimmer filters fit the larger 6 gallon Rigid vacs with the VF4000 filters?
I was here wondering the same thing as I have a vac that takes the larger VF4000. If you try them can you let me know if they work, thanks!
Josh, at 00:37 I saw 4 spray bottle racks on the wall. Could you please tell me where you got them?
I use a soft-bristled paint brush to clean a vacuum filter; the brush's long bristles reach into the filter's pleats and deep-clean them.
That sounds like a good technique!
You talk me into it, I order them off Amazon off your link. Thanks
as a mobile detailer how often would you change the socks?
This hack only works for the 4 gallon and below vacuums, just thought I’d get that disclaimer out-of-the-way
can you put the sock around the vac intake.where the hose attaches to the vac?
Just discovered your channel. Awesome vids.
quick question, what the best water temp for maximum results without compromising coatings?
Thanks! For ceramic coatings on your car? Most ceramic coating are pretty resilient to temperature so anything should be fine. I’m in San Diego so my water tanks is anywhere between about 55-85 or so I would guess when sitting in my water tanks in my trucks
@@imjoshv awesome. what about for general washing? is 80-90 okay?
