Great advice, the only thing I’d recommend is depending on what conditions you might face it help to hit the inside of the seams and even zippers as water can seep through them.
Excellent advise. No matter how much the tent manufacturer brags about waterproofing their tents we have to remember they punch holes in the fabric in the process of making the durned things. So, waterproofing even a new, "waterproof" tent is still a good idea. I have had good luck with something called "Dry Guy". You can brush it on or use a pump up sprayer. It comes in a concentrated bottle.
I’ve got a Walmart special for a backpacking tent. If you have a telescope large enough to read the small print, it actually tells you to do this very thing....and in the method that you describe in this video. Let the haters hate and the unteachable stay ignorant. You can’t fix stupid, but there are plenty of folks who will absolutely benefit from your knowledge. Good job kiddo.
That is hilarious. Some would say that it is stupid to buy such a cheap and rubbish tent like you did. Buy a modern well made polyester type tent (that is what we are talking here) and it should not need any treatment for a few years. If a TENT leaks when new then it has manufacturing faults......... or is from Walmart and not a tent, just a non-waterproof piece of tent shaped material held up with tent poles. You can't fix stupid. Edit: expensive tents made from different materials often need 'weathered' when brand new to seal themselves but are not of thie category in this video.
Great tips🙃 I made a mistake as a newbie buying a non-waterproof tent then worried about bringing things to cover it with Tarp, now I have alternative solution thanks Missy👍
LOL...I was doing this very thing a few weeks ago, trying to coat my haversack, make it a bit water repellent. So, I sprayed that thing until it was dripping. About 20 minutes later, I got dizzy, wobbly. APPARENTLY, I wasn’t supposed to be using that stuff indoors at all, let alone in a tiny motel room. I’m thinking it may be wise for me to start reading labels...lol It works darn well, though! 👍
I'm new to the outdoor stuff, I was told by my friend to check my stuff before we head out in a week, and I was panicking a bit. I found your video and it's very nice and very helpful. Thank you~!
I have a Ozark dome tent that is over 7 years old and it has been thru some serious wind and rain. When I buy a tent I use the water proof spray to treat the outside including the window flaps. I then use the seam sealer to seal all seams. I had one tiny leak in one rainstorm. I also treated my two new instant tents. I have not had but one very tiny drip in one of those. I also do the floor of tent.
Never even considered doing this. Lucky for me bc from all the camping trips I have been on, I have only been rained on once and it wasn't very strong that caused water to ho through my tent. I'll definitely do this the next time I have camping trip. Thank you.
Keep up the great outdoor vids! I see someone following her dad into the great TX wilderness! Say hi to the family and give that cute dog of yours a treat for me!
Really nice video. What brand did you use, & which one is the Best? Does heat or the sun cause any fumes once it’s completely dry? Thanks for sharing⛺️
Awesome Video Bre very informative, yeah getting rained on in your tent is no fun. had that happened to me a few years ago on a camping trip in the East Sierra Nevada Mountains, i had my tent all set up took a nap then woke up with rain water all over. it also helps to make sure your tent is on flat ground and not on a slight incline that was my mistake but thank you for uploading this video, where did you buy that water guard spray?
I was going to ask you about the floor, i have a 4 seasons tent it has like 9 or 10 years old, and this year began to get really wet on the flor, just on grass, i hope i’ll find that product in Chile, thanks for the video, very well explained!
Hi Bre...I recently set up my tent in my backyard during a light rain and found it wet as well as a floor mat I put inside, I know the rain fly did its job, it soaked in thru the edges thats why Im watching your video. My question is, " does it help if you spray the inside seams?" Also?.....I live just south of the border from S.D. so rain is moderate. No downpours. Yet.
I used the same stuff to waterproof my 25+ year old tents! It's great stuff! I sprayed it all over inside and outside, just to make sure! I concentrated it on the seams. Before I did all this I took an extra step and disassembled my tent of all hardware and machine washed! It looks like new and no leaks!
Jordan Sharpe yes. You spray it on and you can see where you sprayed because it's wet. -not to be obvious but seeing it reassures you have have coverage imo. Dries to invisible and not sticky, don't even know it's there.
Hi Bre I bought a North Face assault 2 yellow two man tent back in 2012 I haven’t used it yet but there are a lot of reviews now about it not being waterproof at all it’s made for extremely windy weather I was wondering if I spray it with a waterproof spray will that fix the problem before I use it.? I think I paid nearly $500.00 Australian dollars for it back then I’m just wondering will the spray damage the performance of the wind resistance? Cheers Matt
Im so dumb... I accidentally applied waterproofing silicone spray to the inside seams of the tent and not the outside. I didn't use much at all though, I did such a light spray. Will I be ok? I also only left it to dry for 5-10 min and packed it back up? any advice or recommendations? I'm camping next week and am so scared that I ruined my brand new tent :(
Wait, you posted this in January, but your walking around in shorts and t-shirt? May I ask what area you live in that has summer weather during that time of year?
There is a glamping place out in Wimberly, TX called Sinya on Lone Man's Creek (I think that's more east Texas). Anyway, I had seen a video they posted of some rain they had gotten. Someone commented on the video asking how much rain they got. They replied, "oh, we only got two inches." I am from Phoenix, AZ. We're lucky if we get 2 inches in a YEAR!! *knock on wood* hopefully we get more rain during this next monsoon season!
i think 3 inches is a bit close on those seams. it shouldnt be dripping. its like spray paint, you should do a bunch of thin coats from farther away instead of one or two really close up and thick
In Marine training they told us to dig a trench around the tent in case it rains. This way the rain water collects in the trench and not go into the tent.
Im sure I can water proof Your tent.. I'll Blink once. How do you do that.. This ain't rocket science. Love your videos tho. Now, your newest fan. You rock bre.
You don't need to waterproof a tent. Spraying that on a factory water sealed tent will just bead off and not really soak the fabric. Even if you soak the fabric you make the tent not breathable and you will get horrible condensation. Also that brand of spray is garbage compared to NikWax. Better yet just seam seal the tent and fly and you will be better off.
Disagree with you on this, old tents sometimes need to be waterproofed again. If a tent is going to bead off the spray then I doubt it needs to be waterproofed as its already fine. The main thing I disagree with though is that that the fly (outer layer of tent) is ment to be breathable, its just not. Thats why the tent is two seperate layers. A single skin tent needs to be breathable yes, but not a double walled one. The water vapor from your body ect goes out through the inner layer and then condenses on the inside of the second wall where it drips down onto the open ground. Light weight high end tent flys (the outer layer) are often made of siliconised nylon anyway, a silicon spray isnt going to do it any harm, just add a little extra weight.
The problem I have found even with new tents is the seams. The silicone she used might seal the fabric tight but the screen area of the tent will still breathe and carry out moisture. I have heard good things about Nikwax, I will have to try it on a tent I just bought from ebay.

Nice to see a waterproofing method that doesn't look like a pain in the neck. Thanks!
I have also used that stuff on maps, can easily scan and print out map sections and waterproof them with it too.

Can you do a water proof test.
That is, get inside and have someone turn a sprinkler on the tent and let usall see the results.

Thanks for sharing your video I'll try this out with my new North Face tent.
Excellent video!! I'm about to waterproof mine, for the first time, so I'm gonna follow these tips! Thanks so much!!
Glad I saw this. It's nice to know that tents typically don't come waterproofed "out of the box"

Just found your blog and i love it. Not to mention who doesnt like watching a beautiful girl talk about the outdoors. Lol thanks for the video.
Yeah used the exact same stuff. Dumped buckets of water to test it out and it just rolled right off. Zero saturation
Thanks! Im solo camping now and getting. Thanks for the quick tip :)
glad i've watched this video..gave me an idea to waterproof my pillow cuz i've been shedding tears on it since the death of my heart..
Remember to replace your electrolights, as you'll lose a lot of salt with those tears. Remember safety first!

Question: how long do you need the tent to dry after coating before putting the tent fly on to spray? Does tent need to dry first? Wasn’t mentioned
Never thought of this, thanks for the heads-up.
Thanks. Good video for aerosol waterproofing products. Good presentation an sound quality.
Do you think that same spray would work on neoprene?
If you want to waterproof at the campground & no threat of rain how long before odor subsides/safe to use?
I like your video's. You're very easy to understand and explain things well. Do you have anymore planned??
Yes, I plan on making more. I have been at summer camp, so hopefully soon! :)
I'm working on one today!
I can't wait to see it...thanks for listing to your subscribers.
Thanks that was very helpful and great advise.
I thought the rain fly is already waterproof. Is is just for extra precaution? Thanks for the idea.
it makes the water to slip better and avoiding leaks
How often u get wet in those? I mean how long you've been using it?
Good job young lady, I hope you have a blessed weekend.

Auqua Net hairspray is an excellent water repellent also. Do you have a book that is in print for my 8th-grade class?
Well done and informative video.
Nicely done

Do that spray leave stains?
Wait, you posted this in January, but your walking around in shorts and t-shirt?
May I ask what area you live in that has summer weather during that time of year?
South Texas :)
Bre Outdoors Ah, now that explains it.
I bet your summers are pretty extreme compared to us "northern" states. I'm up in Maryland.
Here in Texas you can freeze to death and get a heat stroke all on the same day.
Does the waterproofing spray leave stains when dry.
No
Cool vid,
What tent is it youre using it looks nice!
:D
Greetings from Belgium,

Thanks for the info . Would Coleman tent sealer be good ? It's an aerosol spray , comes in a rather small can .
I would check how many square foot that it would cover so that you can cover all of your tent... that would be my only concern.
Did she say how long to let it dry? I wasn't sure if i missed that
yup! thank you! great info!
Should you spray/waterproof the entire bottom?
Most definitely as condensation from the ground will most likely soak the bottom. Especially if your tent is a few years old and or worn
Thanks good looking out
Thanks! Great video.
Rain? I'm from west Texas, what is this rain?

I'm from Arizona/Utah and we also have heard about "rain" but only in the movies
A big backyard! 👍
does dripping melted candlewax work also?
Hmmm, good idea - I might try melting down a few candles and brushing the liquid form on, rather spritely :)
I Like that. from Philippines.
Nice to see a young lady that knows what she is doing loves the outdoors and has a knife on her hip. Good job
what is the name of the product and can you put in a link
So it’s just silicone spray ?
i think 3 inches is a bit close on those seams. it shouldnt be dripping. its like spray paint, you should do a bunch of thin coats from farther away instead of one or two really close up and thick
Hope your all doing fine thanks for sharing bre give your dad my regards

What knife is that?
In Marine training they told us to dig a trench around the tent in case it rains. This way the rain water collects in the trench and not go into the tent.

What brand & model tent did you buy that turned out to be a leaker instead of shelter?
@@azclaimjumper it is a Coleman 10 person easy up
Great info
well done thank you

What if I want to waterproof permanently?
With newer tents, you shouldn't need to treat them until the waterproofing start to degrade. As long as water beads off you're still good to go.
So are you going to show how well it worked in another video?
You are so adorable !
Yes my simpy friend, but let's focus on the skills and information
Nice job!
I came for the scenery
Love you!
Your a REAL chip off the old block. live free Bre
Isn't water proofing the inside tent a bad idea because of condensation , best if it can breath
Outer layer of tent is not supposed to be breathable, the air gap between the inner and outer walls provides this.
The screen area at the top will allow moisture to move up and out.
huh, i didnt know that you had to re-apply it every year.
great video! could you do it more long.
cool vid!
"Lightly coat"? as it runs down the side ... Too much is better than too little!
Nice
Step 1 shake can vigorously. Lol
Why doesn’t she mix the van
