Today I'm asking the hotly asked question, and I hate to break it to you, but it might be a little more complex than you thought. With all the different types of surfaces that sports memorabilia has, and all the pen options there are out there (ballpoint pen, paint pen, sharpie, etc), there was just never going to be an easy answer.
The good news for you is that I'm breaking it down, item by item. Best pen for footballs? I've got the answer. Baseballs? Answered. I've gone through it all so stick through the whole video to find the answers to your important autograph questions, today, on the Powers Sports Memorabilia Show!

Getting some items signed later this year and somehow missed this video. Got some notes down so I can ask them to use certain pens. Thanks again for the informative videos you do Matt!!
Thank you for your insights!
I've been a professional athlete on a world level for over 40 years. People are bombarding me to sign T-Shirts and other materials that stretches when signing an autograph. So far, I not found one product that does not pull when using for this purpose. I've spent hours reading and watching videos. I am astounded that no ones mentions any marker that flows over cloth surfaces. The only thing I that come close is a steel rollerball paint marker. IMO, Sharpies are the worse!
What are your thoughts?
Before I go to an event whether that's a signing where athletes/celebs will be then I'll buy something similar to what I want to get signed, so If I want a funko pop I'll buy a couple of $3 pops and test different pens, yeah you spend a bit more money but then I know what will look best and can use that and be happy with my autograph. Its best to trial and error these things rather than meeting your favourite athlete and the signature gets messed up because of the wrong pen.
What is your take on the iron-on numbers on the Nike replica jerseys? Same as the sewn-on numbers? This would be on the OG Phillies Maroon numbers, powder blue jersey. Color of choice is still silver?
I know everyone swears by deco paint pens, but I use uni paint pens all the time and they always work great for me. Their standard size I find is the perfect size and fits on most every item. Not too thick, not too thin. And if you’re needing a white paint pen, molotow white is the best white I think.
The Uni Paint PX-20?
I've gotten a lot of cards signed with blue sharpie, follows the old rule for signing a letter; blue ink means it's not a xerox lol. Glossy cards, gold paint pen are pretty cool. I met Bill Clinton, told my mom to wear a blue dress and ask Bill to sign it in a White paint pen (we laughed, but we'd never actually do that.)
I have a polyester TMNT jacket I want to get signed by the original 4 voice actors but I don't know if I should if it would run fade or anything. I'm just worried how it'll look. I'll still wear it actually anyway lol. Any ideas?
This video is much useful for us. We appreciate it.
Hey what would be the best color and brand marker I should use to get my burgundy jersey from Deportes Tolima signed (2022 home kit)?
absolutely loved this video. very informative! i ordered a HJC half motorcycle helmet. its the marvel punisher one. it’s black and it’s made of Lightweight Advanced Polycarbonate Composite Shell. it’s not glossy like a nfl helmet. very very smooth but yet feels kinda like a yeti. i’m having Jon Bernthal sign it this weekend at a con. what would you recommend using for his auto (consisting of 2 letters, a small drawn punisher skull) inscribed The Punisher + Frank Castle????? silver metallic sharpie marker?? deco paint pen silver? prismacolor silver paint pen?? thanks !!!
I would probably go with a broad prisma
@@PowersSportsMemorabilia i sent a pic of the helmet via message to your instagram. thanks !
I got Dominique Wilkins to sign a jersey over the weekend with a broad tip black deco. The auto looks phenomenal, but after I got it the paint looked to be wet still for awhile. As of right now I have it airing out still because I'm a little scared I might ruin the auto If I try to transfer it to it's display case when It's not dry. I'm just wondering what your experience is with paint markers on Mitchell & Ness jerseys to be specific.
Great Video, Great Info. Thanks!
If it’s signed on a sewn on number it was dry within seconds. If it was signed on a screen printed number might take a few minutes. But whatever state it’s in now is what it’s going to be.
I'm going to supercross next month, and want to get my mx helmet signed. So I'm here trying to see what pen would give me the best autographs.
I've found that if you give someone a large tip paint pen, they sign a larger autograph compared to if you give them a Sharpie. Is there a large Sharpie out there for signing large items like a 18x24 poster or vinyl album cover? The largest non-black Sharpie I've seen are just 'Fine', which isn't that large. Thanks!
There are larger than fine ones
I’m a huge hockey guy-I have a few autograph sharpies and I’m looking to get another new silver autograph sharpie from our team store very soon, what do you recommend for a black polyester carrying case that I’d like to get signed…is a brand new silver sharpie sufficient??? ☑️
Hi Matt, what about wool material jackets? what type of pen would you recommend? thanks!!!
What do you think about about a black fine Deco paint pen or a silver metallic Primacolor marker on a Orange helmet?
Impressive information.
Have you done a record sleeve video?
Thank you. - C
Blue markers are the plaque. I have several items that faded over the years.
Hey Matt! For helmets, I noticed that you recommended a broad paint pen. and then you said Prisma is the best brand. They only make broad for silver and gold. I was wondering what you would use for a matte white helmet? A black prisma paint pen fine tip? Just a thought: should i clip off the tip of the prisma fine point and thereby broaden it a bit as it is thicker at the base? Getting a Joe Montana and Jerome Bettis autograph on some helmets next weekend and want it to be perfect.. Would really appreciate the help!! Thank you.
Deco broad works fine on helmets
Prisma markers are SO hard to find, do you have a link? Is acrylic paint pens or oil better for basketball autographs?
Great Advice.....Ive had autographed treasures fade away over the years
Right there with you. I think autograph fading is just something that so many people (especially newer people in the hobby) don’t think about. Can’t tell you how many signed photos or mini helmets I have that were signed in black or blue sharpie that fade after just 3 years or so. Not even in the light, still in UV protection, and under LED as opposed to fluorescent lights. Thats why I personally will never ever get an item signed in black or blue sharpie again. Done with it. Fed up. I’ve sent items off to signings and asked for black paint pen, and if it’s done in black sharpie, I will just straight up try to sell the item most of the time. Paint pens on photos, balls, helmets, you name it. Silver and gold sharpie are fine
What Pen/Marker would you use on the Plastic Legacy lightsaber Box. The Box is a gray color with lots of room.
My go to markers were silver prismas and blue sharpies over the years
Yes. I am using a uini paint marker. prep the pen and powdered my card. In the end i have a very faint line auto. Till now i got no idea what happen.
Awesome video! And you are 100% right those white footballs are the worst, only ever got 3 signed and all of them fade away so quick
Great run down, appreciate it.
What would you recommend for a 3D Lenticular Print?
Really helpful, thank u!
On prizims and Topps chrome steadler bubbbles up. The sharpie metallic series works on any card, they now make blue metallic and I have not tried thatZ
Best pen for cards like Panini Prizm that have dark background? I have a Russell Wilson 2012 Prizm RC that I would like signed but sharpie (blue) is barely noticeable on the card itself and I'm wary of paint pens.
Paint pens are fine. Blue sharpie is the only sharpie I would ever use on a prizm card.
Hi Matt, I'm considering having a 1994 Topps Finest Refractor and 1998 Topps Chrome refractor cards signed at the national this year. Do you know if those surfaces would need to be prepped before signing? And what are your thoughts on using a blue or black sharpie on them vs a Deco pen? Thank You.
I would prep any chrome card. Especially if using a paint pen. Sharpie you could probably get away without prepping.
@@PowersSportsMemorabilia Thanks Matt.
How do you prep it?
I'm looking to get an autograph on a LOTR stainless steel sword. What kind of pen would you recommend? Thanks
Matt - What kind of pen do you recommend for the NBA 12"replica championship trophies? On my order for the Rodman signing I asked for blue paint, but I want to make sure you think that is a good choice. Thanks.
Typically see black sharpie on those. Most choose to do sharpie on them. Quick to dry on the glossy trophy. But up to you. Blue paint pen or sharpie would work because you are going for a pistons theme.
@@PowersSportsMemorabilia thanks Matt!
I hope this can be answer even if this video was upload a while back… what about Banpresto figure boxes? Will it erase easy on those?
What do you think of the Zebra Metallic Brush Pens? I’ve heard this is a good pen, but don’t know much about it.
What about a Rawlins baseball Glove?
So the deco color paint markers work well on a Matte Finish? Leaning towards white on a dark service.
Yes. Silver better than white.
I have a road game jersey from the Atlanta Braves it’s the color Navy & the number in the back is in red. what decocolor pen should I use black or silver???
Either one works fine.
When using decocolor paint pens on funko pops and photos, what will it look like In a year? In 5 years? I have photos signed in blue sharpie. They are professionally framed with museum glass and the blue sharpie has gotten darker over 3.5 years. It was a lot brighter when it was first signed. Would paint pens last longer or fade and change color?
That’s the issue with using odd ball colors. Just don’t know.
@@PowersSportsMemorabilia so use blue or black sharpie on prints but at the same time don't use blue? I see.
@@booknerd9213 most people use paint pens on funkos not sharpies. I was referring to orange red etc colors
I used a blue Bic pen to get a baseball signed. It has always been kept in a UV cube. And the ink looks purple now.
Hi there, great video!! Quick question, what would be the best permanent marker brand to use on movie steelbooks ?
Sorry haven’t had any signed before
Hello going to a Bengals signing this week. Purchased the new white helmets the bengals will use as there alternative this year. Color advice? Silver or Orange? Having trouble finding prisma through a retailer. Any suggestions help. TIA!
If it’s a white helmet black or orange
I just dm’d Matt on insta the helmet. Hopefully this could clear up suggestions. Thanks!
I’m getting a Saints jersey from NFL shop. Would you recommend the Deco for a Black Saints Jersey with Gold # or something else?
Sure
Great vid!!
Any recommendation for printing plates? It’s looking like industrial sharpie (black) or blue staedtler?
Sharpie or paint pen work fine
Unless I missed it you left out boxing gloves. What would be the best pen to use on those, I am assuming a Prismacolor Broad Silver Paint pen or the Deco Fine Paint pen. Let me know your thoughts. I just used a sharpie metallic marker and made sure i let it dry. I day later i took it out of the box and as soon as I touched the signature it smeared. It happened on a second glove as well. These were $30 everlast 14oz gloves. Two different pens from two different boxes. :( I made sure that to gloves were clean and had nothing on the before I got them signed.
I prefer sharpies
@@PowersSportsMemorabilia any idea why the metallic sharpie failed miserably.
Any suggestions for a yellow pen to be applied on a 35% cotton/65% poly blend black fabric? If not yellow, what color and type would work on such a fabric? Thanks!
Yellow is such a junk color in my opinion. Never goes on well. Silver better option.
@@PowersSportsMemorabilia the only reason for the yellow was for a cobra Kai item. Is gold a possibility in addition to silver and if so which brand. Thank you. Your input is greatly appreciated!
@@jeff5553 gold would be a better choice than yellow. Just never know what yellow is going to look like on that sort of fabric. Deco paint pen.
Question- My wife works for Valvoline and she got pit passes for Talladega NASCAR race. I'm bringing a Valvoline racing helmet that has several colors in it Black,Blue, white and Red. The Valvoline colors. Which colors and type of pen should I bring. Thank you
Paint pen
Hello @Powers Sports Memorabilia - Do you think a gold paint pen on a photo with white jersey is a bad idea?
What do you suggest for a glossy aluminum metal art print?
Sharpie
I try to avoid anything with black ink. Blue or silver always looks so much better.
Recently got back from a private signing and was disappointed in the type of sharpie markers the marker they used was way too thick making the autograph looked all jumbo together does sharpie have a special marker it’s just a little thicker than a ball point pen what size pan are used for these issued autographed cards
Fine point
Which is the best pen for vinyl covers ?
While not sports related, would you go sharpie or deco paint pen on a band tour shirt?
Either one
What kind of pen do you recommend for a glossy photo and also for a canvas?
You can use either a sharpie or paint pen it doesn’t matter
Idk about sharpie on white panel basketball take. I used deco black and after 6 months it worked great and dried.
You’re one of the lucky ones. Last 3 I’ve had done where a paint pen was accidentally used and it never dried and smudged everywhere.
Bit of an odd request. What about a card playmat (similar fabric material as a mousepad)? I don't want the signature to look like a blob so I was thinking a fine point sharpie.
Sharpie
What pen would you recommend for a golf club putter face signature?
Haven’t had any of those done. But a metal surface probably a paint pen.
I cringe when people at baseball games hand a ball and a sharpie to a player. I will say there are times when a player will ask to borrow a fan’s sharpie and go down the line of fans waiting. This happened to me at the ahead of the second game of the Phillies-Mets doubleheader with Nick Castellanos, he signed my ball with a black sharpie he borrowed from a fan just to expedite the process. 🤷🏻♂️
Whst would you use for a darker card? A blue sharpie doesnt really pop on it
If it’s a dark colored card, I generally prefer a white paint pen made by molotow. However, if a paint paint isn’t an option, then a silver sharpie is probably your only option.
@@PowersSportsMemorabilia Thank you
What would you recommend for bobbleheads if it is directly on the bobble? I was thinking black Sharpie, but I wanted to double check before I went and met Johnny Bench
Sharpie. Just know you aren’t going to get a great autograph.
@@PowersSportsMemorabilia okay. Is that because it'll fade more over time than say like a baseball?
@@joshbrewer894 has to do with the surface. Base if flat is your best bet. But I see people try and get the bill of the hat signed and it’s just too small to get a good auto.
@@PowersSportsMemorabilia makes sense. Thank you so much!
Please HELP!!!!
Hello, What pen would you use on a silver Metal Lightsabers. The sabers are in the 400 dollar range. 1 has a shinny finish, the other has more of a flat silver. For the more glossy lightsaber I wanted to us blue because It is the Anakin Revenge of the Sith version (ROTS) lightsaber. The other I have No preference on autograph color. There is obviously limited space. Thank you very much for the info. I can also send you a link to these sabers as well.

I have 2 questions as I’m nervous because I’ve never done in an person signing. 1) I’m potentially getting my Tua (white) jersey signed. I’ve watched your videos on Jerseys and you said black sharpie is fine…would orange hold and last? It’s a Nike game Jersey more than not and that dark teal color number.
Second, I’m getting a full sized Flash alternate revolution speed helmets signed too by quite a few players at a training camp I’m attending soon. Should I use a broad Prisma white on this particular helmet?? Or white molotow? Your help and advice would really be appreciated as I really want these signatures to pop and last for a lifetime. I’m not sure silver would look good on this color..
Link below on helmet btw 🙏🏽PSA; it won’t let me add it to show you but you can look on fanatics to see it 😓 It’s that beautiful shiny teal Dolphins one.
We just don’t know about those funky colors like orange. Has more to do with sunlight and humidity if an autograph will last. I prefer broad paint pens on helmets.
@@PowersSportsMemorabilia Right I agree. But I’m going to be outside in the heat and humidity, and I live in Florida. So, on the helmet would you suggest black sharpie, molotow white, or prisma black? I just don’t want them to run and smudge since I’ll be outside if that has any effect with/on paint pens?
@@brandonchaner3508 I’m talking about long term humidity and sunlight. Not day of. White or black is fine. Any pen. Prisma works well on helmets.
@@PowersSportsMemorabilia I know what you’re talking about, I’m just talking about day of. It will be far from humidity/sunlight long term; most definitely.
