  • Trying DIY wild Irish sea moss gel to define 4c coils for a wash and go.
I have 4c hair and sometimes it’s difficult to define my coils without using up sixty percent of a jar of hair gel in one wash. In fact, I’ve never achieved total definition without spending a ton of money on hair products.
I wanted to try a DIY Irish Sea Moss gel to see if I could cut costs on all of the expensive natural hair products I buy.
    Recipe:
    1 cup sea moss
Cover sea moss in distilled water and let sit for at least 8 hours.
Drain water and rinse sea moss.
Put softened sea moss in a heat safe pot or bowl and cover with distilled water.
    Heat until sea moss melts.
Add 1/2 cup water and desired amount of oil to sea moss.
    Blend.
    Strain if needed.
Check PH balance and add preservative after it cools.
    Put in applicator bottle.

Ok hear me out...I think with botanical gels, less is more - and I’m not just talking about the actual gel but with the layers added to it. Oils, creams and butters don’t play nice with them and possibly are barriers to the botanical gel...preventing them from forming a real cast on the hair strand and resulting in them flaking right off when it dries. Try applying the gel directly onto your hair after you have rinsed out your conditioner/deep conditioner and see how it reacts. And of course apply to soaking wet hair (like you did) and work in before adding more. I bet you your hair will stay defined and flake free😉. Part 2 please! We are rooting for the sea moss wash and go win!

Thank you so much!! I’ve received your advice ☺️ I’m actually thinking of doing the leave in (because it’s clear) and taking out the white creamy butter. Two botanicals together and take out the commercial product. Butters always sit on top of my hair. That’s why I don’t use the hair butter in my videos. My sons hair LOVES it though.

Plant gels are very temperamental! So soaking wet hair, and not as heavy handed application is the key. The aloe gel probably wasn’t happy during the mix. plus the extra sea moss you used in the beginning, also probably made it too concentrated! I’d definitely try it, but with a different leave in, and test it out

I was just so happy you add it, and informored. Bacteria (like you mentioned in another post) can grow unseen in the fridge, freezer, on your hair, etc. AND GREAT mention of pH balancing as well. You definitely did your research 👏🏾👏🏾.

Don’t need to heat it up. Wash out with lime real good. swell in water then blend with purified water in a really good blender. For hair, skin and to digest. No need for preservatives it can last in the fridge for 1 month, 3 months frozen.

  • @Doc_McStuffins
    @Doc_McStuffins 3 роки тому +16

I don't make mine like Whitney. I love her, but I like using my expensive moss for as many things as possible. It's great for skin, hair, and for internal us, so skip the oil.
Black bits are often on the moss itself. Clean the moss thoroughly before soaking and remove undesired black bits then. Then place it in a large bowl of distilled water with a few lime halves overnight, covered. Drain and save the water. I freeze it in ice cube trays and use as a facial toner and hair mist. I don't cook my moss. I don't see the need and some vitamins don't survive heat well. After soaking it's plenty soft. I put it in a blender (I use a nutribullet) with about a cup of distilled water if I have a full large bullet and blend. Refrigerate the mixture and it gells just fine. I freeze these too and defrost one or two at a time to apl9to the ends of my twists and braids for hold or pop a frozen one into a smoothie for a nutritional boost. Keeps defrosted for about 2 weeks.

You should try it out without the leave-in and Aloe gel. I've noticed that these DIY plant based gels also work great keeping moisture in the hair. There is really no need to layer as many products.

Pro tip from a mostly wash & go natural: Whipping isn't necessary until the drying process actually begins. You're not really doing anything while the hair is sopping wet. Whip/shake your hair as it dries to get the desired volume & help keep the curls separated.

    I love your channel and the work that you do. So from one hair scientist to another, I’ll say this to you;
As a rule of thumb always-always mix all your products in the palms of your hands to test for harmony and synchronicity.
If the two don’t mixed together perfectly like water and kool aid, and forms mini clumps on your hands or separates like oil and water the minute they come in contact with each other, that’s a sign that it would flake like snowflakes in Antarctic. However, if the reverse is the case and it mixed perfectly then that your cue that’s it good to go. DO THIS and if it works give your boy a shoutout🗣 Make sure you mix ALL of your products that your use for styling, ( oils, leave in, everything) if it all works, and it mixed all perfectly, then you know you’re good to go. If one product is the culprit, let’s say the leave-in you used, use another leave in that works. Hope this helps!!

I think you used too much product and also i think banding before it dried with this gel specifically might disrupts the cast as and causes flakes as well. So maybe use less and let it dry completely before stretching for a better result.

To test for flaking, mix the products you plan to use, on your hand and see if it flakes when your hand dries. Or save some of your shed hair to test it on. Your WNG was really good, bummer about the flakes. Perhaps to save the WNG you could rinse it off, then only put the product that will mesh with the gel or even the gel only and then dry.

All those nutrients from Flaxseed and seamoss on the scalp? I'm low-key doing no oils etc and my WnGs are coming out amazing and dry in no time! Following your no oils journey and learning. Curious to see a rodset and products used!

Thanks for Share. Yes, sea moss gel is really good for your hair and to put in your smoothies too. Just a remainder for next time -you can take out those brown bits before you put the sea moss into the water first. Good to see young people using this product. 👍🏽👏🏽

Irish moss is very popular in Jamaica as a pudding to eat, it has 99% more vitamins than your normal vitamin supplement. So you can boil, let cool and refrig....then eat a tablespoon a day. Its good for a week. If you don't get the nutrients in your hair then you can have for your body...Love your video

Do it exactly as Whitney did and see if you get the same results. And I wouldn't use the aloe vera gel as a leave in either way. Your results were still good minus the flaking. Whitney also stated to make sure you worked in the sea moss gel very well otherwise you'll have flakes. So like you said I think once you get the right ratio for your hair, you'll get a great result. I forgot to add yes for a part 2 redo.

Hello, quick suggestion maybe try making the sea moss like you make it when you eat it and try using it that way. My theory is maybe heating the sea moss was too much for the plant and not to mention it loses a lot of it’s good properties once you heat it.

Personally, I got confused when you used aloe vera gel before using the nopales cactus gel. I just couldn't understand it. It really threw me off. Anyway, at least you gave it a try, which is more than what a lot of people will do. There were probably too many chemicals and gels in the mix. I've seen people do it with only using their sea moss gel mix and they had great curl definition with no flakes. I can be a bit like you when trying new things so you taught me a thing or two. Thanks! I'm looking forward to your follow up.

Top of the evening to the family on this channel. With all do respect, the black stuff was not from the Sea Moss being burned but from not being properly "WASHED"!the Sea Moss has to be cleaned thoroughly.
The sea moss is from the ocean. So the debree/trash from the ocean is what has to be removed from the Sea Moss.👍

I'd use a little less product, more oil maybe, and no extra application of gel. And do you remember when you remoisturized your hair after using the temporary dye? That's what I'd do.
    Lol you just said that.

I used all of Whitney’s products with this sea moss gel. I think her leave in conditioner is key!! My hair did not flake. I have very fine 4c-4a hair. I also used this on my daughters thick and very dense hair and hers did not flake either. I was scared of flaking because it left a big white cast as I was applying. But It dried well. And it was very soft the next day, not dry at all.

yes to the part 2! I’m super curious to see if the leave in mattered because your initial definition was so yummy!!
