Matt, what a great concept for a video. Meeting up with a builder that can show how they have enhanced their practices and benefitted from the Build Show. And Adam, what a phenomenal execution. It all gets covered up, but you built it as though it will be displayed in a museum. Great job.
This young man exemplifies the very characteristics we need for a successful future. Bravo sir I applaud you and wish you a very happy and prosperous career.
Matt, one of the best shows I’ve seen. Great presentation of the next generation performing effective and optimized-techniques that you’ve been showcasing on your videos. You’re mentoring thousands if not hundreds of thousands whether you know it or not.
I love the signing thing. I was renovating my parents house about 10 years ago. On the back of one of the head casing on one of the doors I found "built for my daughter "X", love dad" along with the date. The date was the year the house was originally built. It was pretty cool to see. I
I feel like this builder's journey exactly describes my own. I spent 2 years watching everything. As a first time owner builder, I just started laying my foundation this week and even created a manual of Matt's greatest hits. To my surprise, the old school subs have even been super receptive. We're all learning and building better. Thanks Matt. My build is in Charlotte, if you're in the area anytime over next 18months, would love to do a similar walkthrough. (We are building 4 more family homes on the same 50 acres lot!)
@@DougWilson36 sure thing. Is there a way to DM me on here and we can swap emails. Now that i finished building, I picked up a few other (would have done this different ideas) happy to share. Im in Charlotte area.
Wow, there is still hope for the building industry! It’s great to see someone that is actually interested in building well. Most builders I see today are only interested in building the cheapest thing they can throw up, and they act like minimum code is such an unnecessary burden on them. I’ve tried to educate a friend of mine that a builder here just outside Chattanooga but he always uses the excuse that he can’t do that because nobody else does and he has to compete. I like the boric acid trick, I did something like that a few years ago. My daughter and son in law bought a big house and the home inspector failed to notice the smell and damage in the attic from a major infestation of mice, squirrels, raccoons, etc. the previous owner had the access points for the larger animals repaired and covered up the mess with a new layer of fiberglass insulation but never dealt with the mice. We eliminated the mice and repaired all the places they were getting in then completely gutted the attic. When we put it back together we used blown in cellulose and I had him sprinkle borax powder into the hopper of the blower while were installing it.
You have helped me, someone who builds/remodels now and then, and new builders. Something to really be proud of. I've completely changed my opinion about a ton of things and baking in those costs for Zip and other things into my upcoming build.. I'm a BSEE (Elec Engineer in Comp Science) and have worked in IT for the last 30yrs, I love building new things with my hands and getting away from the screen. Doing it right the first time makes all the sense in the world. I've had questions, and just by watching your videos, every one of them has been answered in depth. Kudos!
This is probably one of my favorite videos. What a great testament to all of the great information you are sharing and love seeing it implemented to make better buildings across the country. Bravo.
Matt, I'm definitely watching your videos. I'm 25, grew up working construction where speed prioritized quality, however, you, alongside the entire Build Network, have become the best role models from afar one could ask for. Learning from you has challenged my way of thinking, has made me sit, think and plan ahead before execution. Your teaching has taught me excellence. Thank you for doing what you do, thank you for the amazing tips, thank you for all your mistakes that you're helping us avoid. You and your team are awesome! You are to me, as Gamaliel was to Paul. God bless, Matt!
Long time subscriber and this has to be one of my favorite videos ever. Love to see the new builder using so many of the best practices in the project. Thanks Matt for passing on the knowledge.
When you think no one is watching. I can say i am not a builder. However, when working on my house. I think back to techniques and products you have talked about and that info sticks out in how I go about repairing or upgrading. Thanks for the education and entertainment.
Matt you have influenced how I look at things at my house now. This past summer I just got my whole house Mitsubishi ductless a/c with bight heat. I also did my whole house water filtration.
Awesome! I’m a Designer about the same age as you guys and have also learned and taken so much value from The Build Show and Network (especially Steve). It has immensely impacted and elevated the way I draw and design custom homes. I also believe it has helped me gain new clients and grow my small business. I appreciate it so much. Thank you for sharing!
I like when Matt says (“ on a mild day like today when it’s only 90°F outside”). Here in San Francisco when it’s 90°F outside it’s considered a apocalyptic extinction event.
This was so inspiring for me. I'm just getting started with woodworking and building, but wanting to build some small homes for Airbnb in the coming year. Videos like this keep me motivated!
Matt you are my mentor, my instructor, my teacher. I have been watching every single video you make. I am a young builder in Canada and I am telling you that I have learned the trade from you. I have gained much much much more knowledge then I could gain in the college or university. I really appreciate your and the build show network contributors effort to transfer your best knowledge your treasure to next gen builders. I have started to work in my own company, I wish to have you once in one of my great projects. Please promise me that you will come once I have a project where I applied all the knowledge of building science I have learned from you. Thanks and I personally love you.
Extremely exceptional work to detail 👏 I love to see a young person so interested and intusiastic about their work. You will be a great and know builder for high end homes, you keep up that work and your name will spread. I loved the personalized signatures...very special and when we,are all gone ,someone will be like wow, this is so cool
I'm starting a new home in the next two weeks. I feel like this vid is the culmination of a so much learning I've gone through by watching your channel, over the course of the couple years. This vid (like so many previous) will get sent on to my GC. Many of the products in this vid have already been spec'd to my new home. The "shocker" in this one was the split/mini's for HVAC. Thanks again!
What a great interview. You know, trades who care like Adam does are a rare breed. This kind of guy bri G's a ton of added value...you just know he is making decisions that are in the clients best interest. This fellow will always be busy.
I love Adam’s attention to detail. What really bugs me is to see the careless approach so many companies and trades take in their work, slap it together, get paid and it’s see you later.
@@Pious-Inquisitor Sometimes, but it’s been my experience more often than not that people I hire do not provide the quality and attention to detail that they promised from the start. Consequently, I just do most things myself.

Matt thank you for the content you create. Because I saw your video about sealing, Boracare, and Boric acid to keep out air and bugs I talked to the builder then took those steps before drywall. Your suggestions also made me aware of many areas where additional sealant was needed. I feel much better about the seal on soon to be new home. You have also made me aware of some things I plan to do after I move it. Keep sharing great content. As a wine lover I will definitely order some 12 Fires wine.
In answer to your question if anyone is watching. Everyone is! No pressure. I am a retired residential home improvement contractor and hope I can use many of the techniques I have learned from your channel in my finial retirement home I am preparing to build in the next year. Thanks
Having owned houses many hundreds or years old, I appreciate the care and skills of those who built them. Craftsmen could only learn on the job, often travelling and working to build awesome structures. I hope the network possibilities today continue to help skills and technologies to develop.
Wow, what a very proud moment Matt when you know and get to meet someone who has learned from what you do and the content you put out. Keep it going! 👏🏻
That is a testament to Matts impact on the industry at large and to the individual builder. There’s no secret sauce here, just informed decisions and intentional design elements to meet a performance standard. I love that you give context to the reason for these kind of improvements to traditional framing. Some apply other places, some don’t, but it’s the exercise of determining the application and performance you desire and making the building work for you (your customer) or future generations. I love this whole video.
In my opinion. matt relies heavily on his subcontractors and architects for new techniques and methods..he is a glorified salesman..I don't think he's ever built anything with his own hands
Great episode, such a relatable story 👍The building science community is such a generous group of professionals just trying to lift everyone up together.
Great video! It’s so scary to see are younger generation that doesn’t know anything when it comes to construction. I am only 42 years old and it’s scary to see what all is coming into the workforce at this time. I am a commercial superintendent for large commercial projects. And let me tell you there is not a workforce out there anymore. The days of seeing young Formans has come & gone and/or far & few between sadly. So to see younger craftsman is a great thing.
I like how doing something simple like sealing nail holes becomes a whole "thing", basically because builders didn't give a crap for the last 50 years or so.

Someone should really come up with a nail gun that automatically deposits a bead of caulking. Filling up the nail holes after the fact is a lot of work and you’re probably gonna miss some. Great video. I’ve been keeping a list of all the stuff you have used on your house so I can also use on mine one day in the future way up here in Alaska. Awesome to see someone else influenced by you.
I'm sure someone has already pointed out that it was over 20 years ago that the bonfire tragedy happened. I attended the last bonfire, and was already driving to A&M when I heard of the tragedy. I parked on the grass, got out and started helping moving logs This is one of your better videos in my opinion as it shows the products coming together and working together.
Matt, I've got a really cool idea, I have no idea if it's even possible or if its been done before. But I'm buying my first house at 22, and it's an older home that is currently still rather water proof *knock on wood* a roof replacement and likely siding replacement are going to be needed within the next 5-10 years. I was thinking of doing both at the same time, and using my own time and labor and that of friends, do all the demolition, and put up new sheathing, and potentially redo rafter tails as the current ones are rotting at the ends. BUT The question is, as I'm tearing out the old siding and maybe old sheathing, would it be possible to remove all the old (likely batted) insulation from the interior walls, and spray closed cell foam, then put new Zip System up on the exterior, and then do the roof and siding? Or does spray insulation have to be done from the inside?
Matt, do you have video or more information about the air seal that Adam did between the slab and the framing? I’m really interested in getting more information about that.
Matt, what a great concept for a video. Meeting up with a builder that can show how they have enhanced their practices and benefitted from the Build Show. And Adam, what a phenomenal execution. It all gets covered up, but you built it as though it will be displayed in a museum. Great job.

The question is, as I'm tearing out the old siding and maybe old sheathing, would it be possible to remove all the old (likely batted) insulation from the interior walls, and spray closed cell foam, then put new Zip System up on the exterior, and then do the roof and siding? Or does spray insulation have to be done from the inside?
That was an Awesome Video. Thanks for sharing.
Way to go 12 FIRES!!!! Great find Matt!
Matt, do you have video or more information about the air seal that Adam did between the slab and the framing? I’m really interested in getting more information about that.
Beautiful work! Also, advanced framing is awesome until it's not. That's why I like Matt's house. What's good for the goose is good for the gander
I love the osha evidence at the end signing the wall 😂😂👌🏻
Matt, you should come to Los Angeles we love you here
