How to Fix a Floppy Sun Visor that does not stay in place on Your Car for less than 25 Cents!

  • Do you have a loose sun visor on your car? Here is a good DIY loose visor fix:
My 2008 Hyundai Sonata had a sun visor that would not stay up and kept coming down when we would hit a slight bump in the road until now when it will not stay up at all. I watched a few videos about this. One person suggested using Velcro, another person said to use electrical tape I tried all of these methods including those and Teflon tape with no success until I tried using a zip tie placed along side the rod that attaches to the visor and then using two small zip ties and then pushing it back into place worked great! There is enough friction that the visor stays put like it should!! Save your money don't buy a new sun visor until you try this! It worked great! It even looks good you cannot see the zip tie inside the visor! If you have this problem try it! Cheap and easy fix!
This should work for any sun visor of a similar design. My car is a 2008 Hyundai Sonata. I think all 2004 through 2009 Sonata's should be similar to this one. There is a small wire on the end of the metal shaft which feeds the switch wire to the makeup light above so be careful to not cut or damage the wire when doing this.
Sorry this is not an adventure video like I usually post on my channel but a how to video that I think may help someone out there.

Dear Trevor, I am trying to do a ziptie repair of my 2002 Toyota RAV4, but I cannot figure out how to slide the flap off of the shaft. There is a copper rod inside the non-hinge side of the visor and there are no screws or slots or anything to let me slide the visor on the shaft as you show in your video. Yours is probably a later model. But the visor flap will not budge along the metal shaft at all. Please advise.

You can tape the zip-tie to the metal rod with a long thin strip of Gorilla Tape that's just a bit wider than the zip tie --- then slide the visor over it --- that gives it one more layer of 'friction resistance', and it keeps the tie from moving.

Well I'll be damn! I tried the tape solution and was headed to the hardware store to try the screw solution but stopped and gave this a try. This worked perfectly! I man'd up and used a bigger zip tie and shoved it in good and proper and now it stays up even without being in the retaining clip. I had the same problem as he did with it initially fitting in the clip so I cut off the head of the zip tie which allowed it to slide in further. You're the man!

I also had a thought that scrap pieces of plastic from a string grass trimmer could work too and possibly even better because it is rounded where the zip tie is flat. Have not tried this but it could work too.

    • @The_Reality_Filter

FYI zip ties or cable ties as we call them here in England can also be used to replace those pieces of plastic from strimmers and they work better too.

Thanks for posting this Trevor. What an excellent DIY fix that worked well for my vintage 1990s Toyota. It just took some patience and 3 zip-ties to gain sufficient friction. But since I bought 20 for under $5 bucks there's now plenty leftover to tie off uncooperative TV cables and in case I need to occasionally add one to the visor. BTW, velcro didn't work and electical tape didn't hold, and now I don't have to pay $60 for a new visor or lose 3 hours of precious weekend time hunting through an auto junkyard.

    • @TrevorLindgren
      @TrevorLindgren  8 років тому +1

This fix was great. I used 3 ties on one visor and 1 on the other and they are now perfect. I have a 2008 Hyundai Sonata. One thing I did was take the whole visor with wires off. It made it a lot easier to work on a table to get the ties in as well as to get the visor back on the metal rod. I watched another UA-cam video to see how the visor came off. Super easy! Actually, magnets worked for me. Double sided tape and magnets worked for a while, although the magnets worked perfect, the tape only lasts a while (depending on the product), and and after removing the tape- instead a tiny bit of silicone/goop glue/ or epoxy will do the trick (I can keep you informed). Don't use industrial strength magnets because that puts stress on the glue. play around using the double sided tape, once you find the size magnets that feel good- then glue. That is my experience.

Yes, tape's going to let go, in the heat. If you want to stick with the magnets, maybe wrapping in a bit of fabric and hold in place w/upholstery pins.

This annoys the absolute crap out of me, and I got my car last year. I'm 6'2 and it's a pain when I drive cause it would randomly flop down in front of my eyes when I drive and I just start getting pissed off and punching it.

Seems to work well on my wife's 08 Sportage. The one proposed by Akhill would not work in my case as the visor is expanded polystyrene and cannot be opened the same way as his

Great idea but it just doesn't work for my Ford Fusion. Put two zip ties in it and didn't work unfortunately. I'm sure it'll work for other cars tho.

Did this hold up long term??

Yep. Still working. I had to replace the zip ties about 3 or 4 years ago by stuffing new ones in but it has held up. Since 2016 so 5 years still working ok. Not exactly like a new visor (it will come down occasionally with a big bump in the road) but it works good enough for me.

Sadly this didn’t work for my 2006 Acura TSX. I used plyers to shove 3 zip ties in there but it still flops down. Tried to shove a 4th in but it didn’t seem to make a difference. Previously tried velcro but that didn’t work. Now I am going to try other things. This is such an annoying problem. Sucks that so many people are experiencing this.

Yes it is frustrating. You may have to get a new visor.
