  • I was tasked with restoring a rail / steamer trunk dating to around 1900. It was rusty, dirty, mouldy worm ridden. I generally polished, de-rusted, sanded and oiled it to tip top condition.
    Made by p.Collonge, Paris, used by Chemin du Fer de L'ouest Railways to 1909. Acquired by S.C.O.M. (Service Central D'Organisation et Methode) 1959-85. Ended up in Oxford, UK 1992. Sold in Merthyr Tydfil junk store 2017.
    Bonus clip at termination of video.

    I just obtained a steamer trunk myself and with your insightful video i feel confident on how to restore and properly clean it. Thank you.

    Practical, entertaining and amusing. “Because I’m impulsive and I don’t think before doing things, I’ve completely wet and almost destroyed this . . .” Is such a nice, matter-of-fact self-reprimand. I must remember to quote that to myself in future. I thoroughly enjoyed this.

    I am sad there are so many negative comments here, this was brilliant and cleaver, I think it was a really good restoration. I like your honesty and sense of humor, as well as using plant poison to keep bugs from eating the wood further. Most people don't even know about plants and how to use them. Good job. with so many different materials in this item, you did amazing at working with each one as it needed. I like it!

    i love that you stained your filler with coffee. i do that with painting often. second, next time you have to clean an old fabric, try using an oxy-clean type product. yes it takes longer because it needs to soak for awhile, but their is no actual bleach and it won't ruin your fabric. do this by hand.

    I love this guy. He's hilarious! Nope, not a professional 'restoration' but something maybe a normal impatient and impulsive person could manage cheaply. Would his family member be happy? Probably. Looks ok good to me.

    I mean...as a functional item, is quite good, but as a restoration is a 6 out of 10 being generous. Now is never going to be restored to its former glory, because part of it was destroyed really.

  • @oldmanfromscenetwentyfour8164
    @oldmanfromscenetwentyfour8164 6 років тому +34

    Restoration?? Hardly. The FIRST step in Restoration is to clean the item with the mildest solution as possible (soap and water or water and vinegar), resorting to more aggressive solutions for more difficult areas AND knowing when to STOP.
    The first thing YOU do it attack it with a grinder! FAIL!

    I actually think the end result turned out good, as it was in horrible condition before. You kept it looking antique and any further restoriation would have ruined the charm of the chest.

    That´s not a restoration, it´s a cleaning up.
    The patina of the brass and iron as well as the wood and burlap is lost for ever (that is the worst error) and the interior should have been saved and put back.

    • @highdownmartin

      I just ripped off the loose bits and glued the rest down with wood glue. It was a hessian type material, painted with a tar or bitumen like substance to deter woodworm.
