ABOUT
_
In this video, I talk about Friedrich Nietzsche, Thus Spoke Zarathustra, and why you are your own worst enemy.
Fear is often our greatest obstacle. Fear arises from thought, thought arises from desire, desire rises and falls based on our understanding of the world, and our understanding transforms through contact with reality.
Fear - Thought - Desire - Understanding - Contact

I’m an upper limb amputee and I hide it by wearing long sleeve shirts all the time but now I feel like I just wanna wear whatever I want except that I’m scared of how others will perceive me. Since the amputation, my family raised me over-protectively and so it was there when they started buying me only long sleeve shirts and from there I grew up being afraid of what others might think if they ever saw my limb difference along with my scars. This vid has revealed to me that it is my desire to be perceived as a “normal” person but what is normal anyway?? Now I will try to be brave and wear the cool graphic t-shirts I’ve always wanted to wear. Thanks a lot and shout out to Nietzsche
bro wear a hook, you´d instantly be the coolest cat of the bunch
I recommend the podcast 99% invisible, the episode called "The Lows of High Tech" (July 27) which covered exactly this. Like, exactly, limb difference and everything. I have a different disability and I did learn to ignore what others think.
@@Kevin-rf5zh To ignore what others think is to rather ignore what you think others think. Is to be courageous to the possibility of that what you thought is going to influence your interactions. Pretty Courageous, if you ask me
But, question time, doesn´t it feel somewhat empty ? Ya know?, to not have that limb?
How did you manage to write all of this with one hand? Hmm, that would be very interesting to read.
WOW. I was honestly looking forward to getting a myo-electric prosthesis similar to hers but resorted to a body-powered because I found it more applicable to my needs (I study chemistry). I’m glad you mentioned that podcast because I was seriously having doubts and was thinking that vanity was more important than practicality.

Yes, my genocidal feelings are valid
I think he was just being nice. He was just politely brushing aside his feelings because they are an obstacle. Your feelings are neither valid or invalid, they are just the result of your desires and understanding. This video could easily be called, your "feelings are your own worse enemy." To let feelings entirely dictate your actions is like letting a horse decide where you should go instead of you. If your just a bundle of feelings, then you will end up as an animal, another person in the crowd who won't think for themselves. One of your most primal desires is to survive and going along with everybody is one of the easiest ways to do that. But animals just survive. You are a human and as such, you may have greater desires than merely survival. Consider the student acrobat. What animal would willing do acrobat stunts for entertainment? And don't say monkey... no monkey is going train himself or do great acts like a professional acrobat would, because it takes actual training and work to be good at it. So ask yourself this question, do you want to be an animal or the best human you can be?
@@Jimraynor45 I dont think he was being nice but I think its more about the fact that ppl sometimes have the worst feelings and based on those feelings, they freak out and torture themselves by thinking that these feelings define who they are and just want them gone cause it generates a whole other feeling of "feeling bad" ab whatchu experiencing. For example I have OCD, and first time i experienced intrusive thoughts, I had no idea what the fuck was going on and I couldnt bring myself to even talk to someone about that. But here's the thing, this really goes hand in hand with what you're saying because if you act based on these intrusive desires/thoughts or even feelings then definitely, youd be nothing but a robot or live life based on them and not with your brain.
But that doesnt mean that these thoughts/desires/feelings aint valid, they are, but they're not you and you shouldnt judge yourself based on that. For example meditation is the perfect example for this; when you notice a thought arising, simply notice it and return back to your breathing. Noticing it equals that you acknowledge its valid but its not you.
This video come at the right time in my life. Perfect timing.
Exactly, even for me

I think this is one of the major issues in western culture. We strive for the respect of the people around us even though they may be nothing like us. This is a sort of conformity that stifles the individuals character, twisting and warping them into a less happy productive good person.
It’s also very difficult being your own person. You have to be very aware of who you are and courageous enough to be that person, and constantly run the risk of being out of balance and becoming someone no one respects
Try eastern culture, you'll easily see how individualistic the west is, especially when you're in New York, you'll see the very definition of individualism. Crowded place but it seems people are far away from each other.
I believe the same problem persists in eastern cultures but it may just be human nature to seek approval and be a part of the community.
@@gamer-ni5kl It's worst in the east, that's why South Korea has the highest rate of suicide because of Social pressures. The west is more liberal and progressive because such philosophies and social constructs came from the west in the first place, while in the east it's more conservative and traditionalist.
You don't have to strive to be yourself...just remove what you are not, safe landing
@@reithreithreith U really should look at eastern philosophies then and you will think what happened to the east

If only life was this simple. Fear doesn't stem from desire. Trauma and generational trauma and thoughts/fears about the world are etched on your bodymind in your formative years, when your own cognition is very primal. You can't simply talk your way out of it. It requires much, much more than that.
it says more often than not btw
It stems from your Thought Process - Thinking. And yes, for the most people struggling at one fear or another, they were conditioned into it.
The method for breaking it is still not fully established.
Facing it, however, is the seemingly counter intuitive but effective way to do it.
Doesn't that go back to your understanding of the world and your contact with reality? Which he said proceeds your thoughts and heavily influences all those later things including fear?
Nietzche served as a medical orderly in a war and saw/dealt with the craziest shit imagineable. He did drugs and fucked prostitutes about it but much of his writings are about dealing with trauma. Overcoming that fear and trying to find a purpose was a battle he fought his whole life. He definitely didnt say its an easy battle to win but recognizing its an internal personal struggle with yourself is a good starting point if you want to find some kind of peace.
If fear stems from desire couldn’t one easily say that those who have suffered from Trauma have gained desire to be free from it? Maybe then trauma survivors have more desire than others. They desire to be safe more than others. Recognizing less worry about safety is warranted would make one feel safer. I think this is accordance with Nietzsche’s proposed solution.
Also, talking your way out of it is not what’s being proposed; it’s more understanding your way out it. The 2nd one is a lot harder than the first.
Wish I could just have a Dark Souls type boss fight with myself
LMAO it kinda is in a way just less flashy
Right!?
It kinda reminds me of Ocarina of Time, when Link fights himself in the Water Temple
Lol it's alot more unfair fighting with yourself, because you share the same HP bar ,level and experience
The thing is... you need love more than fighting.
Nietzsches work is not simple and it is incredibly nice to have you simplify it in this format where even kids can all understand and relate. Thank you for your great work.
"There are two different types of people in the world, those who want to know, and those who want to believe."
-Friedrich Nietzsche
But what if I want both? Serious question.
@@holyromanracist5759 Interesting! couldn't do both at the same time, but doing one for longer periods of time will diminish your ability to excel in the other
"Knowing is believing".
"There's no value in judging how you feel. Your feelings are always valid"
the lack of money problem for artists is not so easily solved. For every successful artist, there are hundreds if not thousands who couldn't make it, even after giving everything to achieve their dreams. The reality is, society only values the cream of the crop in artistic and creative endeavors.
Well if you're the real deal you'll be able to develop a niche/a style original and specific enough that everyone who likes it will be able to obtain it from you and you only. If you simply like to draw occasionally or to cover other artists songs then it's maybe for the best to keep it just as a hobby and instead invest the majority of your time in some sort of work where you're able to constantly contribute and create value. Eg my earnings from my art as well as my style increased drastically since I became a janitor. Why? Because I removed the desire and the fear out of the way and I'm able to create with full freedom without thinking what if people don't like my next thing.
This is why I don’t like the “everyone gets a trophy” mentality. I’m reality only winning matters in life, the losers are forgotten.
You didn’t get the video’s message at all…
@@j_mokusei he is still afraid
It's simple not easy. Figure out the value you provide and stick with it. Not everyone lasts long enough to come to this conclusion.
Don't make excuses for yourself if you want to live as an artist. It's possible: YOU have to be brave enough to figure it out.
Excellent video and story.
I love the perspective of learning what is actually a necessity for yourself and having that be a guiding light.
Thank you!
Understanding the inner workings of the mind like that is so therapeutic
This is a wonderful interpretation of this idea. It's interesting that the barrier for most people to actualize this way of thinking is the ability to change your mind once new information is presented in "contact". Having the ability to be flexible with your understanding of the world, I think, is a key attribute to living your best life. Knowing that you do not know it all.

I had learnt sometime ago that desires are so powerful, so I longed to know how I can be able to cultivate a desire so that I can fulfill my dreams. This video pointed that out so clearly. Now I know my desire comes from my understanding which comes from my contact with reality.
Oh boy! Am going to shake the world with this principle I have just learnt. Thank you so so much

The way you have put together this conversation is just fantastic. It just keeps building from one thought to another, and everything makes sense. Brilliant stuff.
I only have one question. "If something is a necessity for you, you better _believe_ it will be a necessity for someone else too..." That seems to be the only weak link. What if that belief is wrong and the stakes are high?

This is what my main character needs to realize in the novel I'm writing. So glad I found this, it's a nice way of conveying his words in a way anyone can understand. Thank you.
I completely agree with you backtracing of stimuli and solving them, ultimately we reach a point where things change when we get in contact with noticed knowledge, that's why if we read a philosophical book, the unnoticed thing becomes noticed and then understanding of surrounding then desire then thought then stimuli, the best way is to question your fear and if things are not in control then accept it and take responsibility on what's in your control. I wish you all have a great life and freedom of thought next target 10 million. If you want to read a philosophical book then I'll recommend Seven "Spiritual Laws Of Sucess".

Wow. That brought tears as well as goosebumps. An astute observation on the source of fear and obstacles. Another offshoot thought I got from this is, yes indeed our understanding changes as gain more contact and experience life. But does that change us continuously? If so how to be certain about ourselves?
Speaking for myself only. I'm always trying to change into the best version of myself. Others I've seen have no appetite for knowledge , growth and self improvement. They believe they are perfect as God's and it's the world that's causing all their problem s.

As a lecturer, my task is the go from the general to the specific, to make the complicated simple or simplified. This is not always easy. It requires time, eloquence and acuity of thought and speech. You accomplished this superbly well. You graphics were also excellent, especially at the end. I personally found the content interesting and I learned a lot. Thank you very much.👍
Merp- this is somewhat true to an extent but also is an easy way to actually dismiss problematic and abusive behavior by other people.
I have a boss who loves telling everyone to “change their mindset and thoughts” when he is the most toxic and nasty person ever. He’ll berate you and humiliate you, then tell you “well maybe you just need to change your mindset.” He thinks abusive behavior is a justified because it teaches you to be stronger.
yup ! narcissists use that tactic all the time to escape accountability
it’s like someone telling you to stop bringing up the past when you hold them accountable just so they don’t have to apologize or change their behavior
Did Nietzsche actually talk about this chain of contact understanding desire thought and fear or is it just his quote about being your own worst enemy?
I went to therapy for three years and you broke this down in minutes. Thank you 🙇🏻♀️
This was incredible!
Not only useful information, but pleasantly presented and easy to digest.
Part of the reason we conform is because the economy demands it of us. The video notes that the student is afraid of not making any money and having to live on the streets, but it doesn't offer any real solutions to that fear. I don't know how much trapeze artists make but there's a reason there aren't that many: the demand is not that high. Poverty is a valid fear; not everyone is able to make a living following their dream, and in the US at least we have no safety net for people who "fail." (Most often the safety net for creative people is their families, therefore the pressure to choose a "normal" career path.) The ideal would be for everyone to follow their dreams, but many of us literally cannot do so without risking our lives.
Also a question, have you found any philosopher which talks about absolute freedom like Krishnamurti ? Would be helpful if there exists another philosopher just to better understand, coz Krishnamurti's thoughts are somewhat unique
The clarity I needed... Thank you ❤

"Suicide is that comforting thought, that gets one through many a dreary night."-Nietzsche
According to Nietzsche, Stoicism teaches the philosopher to escape from life into commerce with the Stoa, suppressing ones passions and will-to-power. Stoicism is therefore a life-denying philosophy using reason as a weapon against the realities of being alive.
Reminds me of Osho vs Buddhism, with buddhists detaching from/rejecting desires but being left in a state of coldness. It's always been my personal pov too. There's one phrase that I found perfectly expressed this: detachment is not that you should own nothing, but that nothing should own you. It's not about rejecting desires or anything worldly and materialistic, it's about enjoying them from a place of no-mind/no-ego where there's no identification with said things, therefore no hope nor expectation, no compulsion nor urge to control and no fear, only will to experience and share.

idk if this is a sign, but i had a chat with a friend today and in the middle of my misery he said the exact same words like '' There is no value in judging what you feel. your feelings are always valid, you have to look deeper into it rather than blocking them'' , i am shook. guess i have to accept and move on with a better version of myself, rather than beating me up for not doing or beeing enough, what i actually am. and yes, agree, i am my worst enemy and i can change that. thank you!

Funny, I end up on the street while pursuing music. When I had a 3 out of six string left on my instrument and no money nor food and friends wanted to call cops cause I was getting to comfortable couchsurfing , I thought that I was selling a value : Beauty , esthetics , good mood and that I should let of the fear or what others will think.
Author , spend tree days on empty stomach during a hot summer day performing art and having buddies throwing you on the streets , then council. Real life experience might be a quite different then reading a book.
Thanks for sharing your experience. This is quite a nice reminder to always consider that unpleasant things like this might happen too
You do know who Nietzsche is though, right ? And like the person I said above me, there is risk reward factored into this. Not everyone wants to hear everybody’s music; there is a competence hierarchy, you see
