Yes, Alex was with Ed from the very beginning and he was very protective towards his little brother. In some ways Ed was very much the ‘sensitive creative artist’ type and Alex was more streetwise so Alex always looked out for him…Ed and Alex were the ULTIMATE UNIT actually….Both as brothers and as musicians. When they would jam together live or in studio recording out takes I’ve heard I don’t think I have ever heard two musicians locked in so tight able to anticipate where each was building and taking the music they were creating on the hoof together…It was like E.S.P ….It was FANTASTIC to WATCH as well as to listen to….Just watch the footage on the video LIVE WITHOUT A NET from 1986 with Ed’s trans Trem intro on GET UP when Ed is standing on the drum riser with his brother getting astonishing loud feedback ….Watch the bit when ALEX starts up the drum pace and looks at ED ! …Watch the BODY LANGUAGE CONNECTION between them….It’s like Alex is saying with his eyes -‘let’s just KILL ‘ EM BRUV’ ! …..F****NG. A…….. lol….💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪🙏🙏💥💥💥💥⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️

@godbyone I think MIKE gave interviews years later where he described his audition to replace Mark Stone in Van Halen. Mike said - 'Ed & Alex put me through about every time change & switch you could imagine & it was quite a baptism of fire' .....Mind you , it was for WOLFGANG too over 30 years later when he came into the picture & he was only 15.

Alex is the voice I trust and believe. He's honest but fair in his remarks. He gives credit where it's due, but is 100% honest about his feelings. Most remarkable is his description of what he and Ed would do left to their own devices because that was their future when they were left to themselves. Recorded tons of music that nobody ever heard.

Alex & Ed also spoke about their Vans & how they transported their gear around in them in this 2012 Interview with DLR talking too. They had some funny tales to tell in those interviews. Doors held shut by ropes & Alex's INGENIOUS ways of fitting his entire drumkit into a TINY little Van by strategic positioning like doing a Rubic Cube puzzle but on a much larger scale & with Ludwig toms ....lol

These were great to listen to. I actually learned some cool stuff about Alex that I never knew before. I hope Alex talks a little about his gear in the early days. From the time Alex took over Edwards drums, which were pretty cheap, I am curious to know what he used up until he got his famous silver sparkle Ludwig set. I would also love to know the details about when and where he purchased that set as it must have cost a small fortune back in the early 70's. I know most people want to know about Ed's guitars (and I get it) but there are quite a few of us that really want to know more about Alex's drums. Thanks for putting these up Steve!

Their father came home from a gig pretty drunk one night, and tried to move their neighbor's trailer that was blocking their garage without noticing that the wheels were off. He pulled it off the blocks it was on and chopped off one of his fingers, which basically ended his musical career.
The following day he took several of his instruments to a music store and traded for a Ludwig kit and a Les Paul. There is a picture of the sales slip in the Greg Renoff book, I believe.

Can’t wait to buy Alex’s book. Interestingly, it goes to show how strong personalities are. So Alex trashes Roth, and sometimes I think that is warranted very much so. He brings up Roth screwing a girl friend of Ed’s? If that’s true, that is shitty. However he trashed Monk, and according to Monk in his book, he did not care for Alex, and said that Alex on drugs or high at the time was trying to hit on and blatantly asked Monk’s wife to fuck while they were all on a plane together. If this is true, it just goes to show the bullshit humans display. If Monk’s story is true, Alex is a hypocrite. I disagreed with Monk however in calling Alex a mediocre drummer. Alex is an awesome drummer.

I'm not sure today if Alex is happy with Sammy actually. That book 'RED' which Sammy wrote did some awful damage ....I think Sammy made a terrible mistake ...Particularly that chapter 'Crazy Ed' .....It should have been deleted from the book before publication....It was written in an unsympathetic way which failed to realized that Ed was going downhill with booze & substances because he was using them to obliterate the fear of that DAMN cancer hanging over his head like a sword of Damocles. Ed wasn't a 'bad' person really. He suffered & Sammy shouldn't have written a book capitalizing on that....But in more recent interviews with hindsight I think Sammy actually DOES regret writing that stuff & putting it out there. 🤥😔

With Eddie they were gonna make it with or without Roth . Sammy was already playing 10 to 20,000 seaters as a solo artist you don't think if they put him as the singer for that band they wouldn't have made it? I guarantee they would have sammy already made it people knew who he was then you put this kick ass band behind him there's no way they fail. They didn't fail a few years later with him now did they. They got bigger and went up another level. You heard Alex talking about Roth not one time sing a complete song in the studio because he couldn't. And like Alex said again Roth vouldnt sing a complete song live in concert the guy wasn't much of a singer and why some of you people lie to yourself and say he's a great singer or I take that back you hardly ever say that it's he's a intertainer. Because he can't sing. In the studio he could try to sing one line at a time and the would doctor it up and piece it all together and you guys that don't know that say he can sing he songs great on the album. I just have to laugh at you Roth lovers that says he can sing.

The more i hear AL talk on these interviews, the more it seems like he learned to speak English from watching re-runs of Dragnet.....lol.

Being 100% Dutch myself and spending my life inundated in Dutch culture here is West Michigan Ed and Al's mastery of the English language, without a profound Dutch brogue, is truly impressive.

Alex has always come off like a complete prick but seems OK in these interviews. Feel bad for both him & Ed fighting alcohol & smoking their entire lives especially since, from the stories I've read, ol dad was a complete mess himself & they followed in his footsteps.

Its easy to be judgemental like that ....Don't be hard on their Dad. He went through a lot of things involving suffering. Like losing a finger in an accident , not getting the credit he deserved as a GREAT musician himself & much economic hardship.

Alex was the brighter of the 2 brothers, but thats not saying much. " Dave never sang a song straight through in the studio" No one does one take in multi track recording studios, even great vocalists, which Dave never was. Sammy surely comped his vocals. Shows Al was ignorant about quite a few things. Huge VH fan here who loved Eddie, but as i got older and heard more interviews realized that he and his brother could be dumb jerks fairly regularly.

I don't think there's a need to insult Alex & Ed like that....Ed & Alex as musicians tended to get things often with as few takes as possible. Because they didn't need comps because they were such LIVE musicians. In fact those early VH albums were pretty much their LIVE sound with a bit of 'reverb' & very few overdubs or re-takes.

    • @walterevans2118
      @walterevans2118 3 місяці тому

@TheDmonet ....You have to realize that when this interview was made by Alex in 1985 WW3 was brewing up in the media between DLR and the Brothers. DLR was stirring things up too about 'eating VH for breakfast' 'Eat Em & Smile' & these were in official interviews so God only knows what Dave was saying about the Brothers in unreleased BEHIND the scenes interviews like this one with Alex. Things DID get better between them as the years went by thankfully. At moments in this interview I actually started feeling sorry for Dave.

Nah Al is right, i Heard a story from the Engineer Erwin Musper who worked for VH and did the Me wise magic sessions with them. Dave had to sing word for word. We are not talking about comping several good takes but about a guy who can't even sing a single usable verse or chorus at once in the studio.

'Insert any drummer' ? ....NOPE , go back & listen to the rhythm interplay between Edward & Alex. .....It was like E.S.P ...Plus a lot of Ed's riffs were shaped by Alex's rhythms....For evidence of this listen to out-take rehearsal recordings of Ed & Alex at 5150 rehearsing the stuff on 'Girl Gone Bad' BEFORE it had been crafted into a complete song.
