  • "Julie Mehretu: Mid-Career Survey," produced by the award-winning Checkerboard Film Foundation, was screened at the LACMA and High Museum installations of the Julie Mehretu exhibition. Using excerpts from Checkerboard's hour-long film, "Julie Mehretu: Palimpsest," this eight-minute short offers a glimpse into Mehretu's art, process, and inspirations.
Julie Mehretu is organized by the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The exhibition is curated by Christine Y. Kim, curator of contemporary art at LACMA, with Rujeko Hockley, assistant curator at the Whitney.

Is her use of "Haka" in reference to the Maori dance of the same name, or does it mean something else entirely?

Given the scale of these pieces I wonder about the industrial MOMA ego sizing. Where do they fit? I have been in very big houses that can’t do this scale. I wonder also if the audience is now a succession of elitism. Is this evolution of an artist succeeding and needing to do it with scale? There is an overwhelming of senses at that scale, maybe even common sense. I do have questions arise in me but not yet anything that reflects the buried and blurred subliminal context that the artist works from. I feel these are aesthetically designed and orchestrated, pleasing to see not profound messaging

It's intended for museums and corporate lobbies, or private collections of the ultra rich, who would have spaces built. Either that or it ends up in storage, which sadly is the fate of most art, most of the time.
If you think it's too large, I agree. But the art world can't seem to get enough of big bloated oversized work, so here we are.

1:14 thanks for your reply. Your well considered take on the scale and placement of these kinds of works is appreciated. I see now that my question of “fit” is also one of a psychological fit and you have helped answered that for me as well. The on going supersizing trends in the Art World serves as a proud if not also perverse banner for the rich and powerful. All the while curated by a small group of servile intellectuals. This is a big playground for the Quixotic artist. Cheers
