Back to the days, the Shure SM57 is the most used microphone for guitar recording. We could just spend hours trying to mention some of best guitar tones took with it.
In this demo, we paired the SM57 with another "Holy Grail" of guitar tone: The Celestion V30 speaker.
Let's hear how this incredible couple sounds like in 14 different (and popular) guitar cabs.
Enjoy!

All of them sounds really good!!
Something screwy going on with the 2551 example. There's a drastic change in the high mids and high end between 2:16 and 2:18. Suddenly goes from wooly to bright.
Nice! That Friedman Cab ... holy ... 🤘👌
Now THIS Is A Video! Awesome Job keep this up!
Hey men youre here!!!
Didn't listen with headphones yet, but comparison is f'in great! This rivals the v30 hesu comparison you guys did a while back. Urge everyone to view that one
To me , the ENGL is the winner. Great video!
I came to here to hear the ENGL and wasn't disappointed! It and the 5150 did it for me...Mesa OS a close third.
Honnestly i am curious to know what better from the engl compare to friedman or overall mesa 4x12 and even 2x. Is no judgment but only curiosity. Which context, style, genre etc do u like to prefer engl ?
@@yvesfellay4343 IMO, the Friedman had no bottom end and the Mesas were very good/ They were slightly boomy compared to the Engl, which is front loaded (Mesas rear loaded). I agree with the OP that in this demo the Engl sounded best out of the 4x12's. The Peavey was also impressive. For 2x12, the first Bogner and Orange were my favorite.
I'm all about that bass sound. Huge.
Loved the Mesa Boogies and the 1960 Marshall 4x12.
They sound strange, out of phase or too much room?
It's pretty hard to compare the sound of these cabs as the riffs are different. :(
I would love to hear the guitar playing the same thing (just like the Seymour Duncan comparison with their pickups), it would be awesome! :)
Exactly. It should be one riff the whole time for each cab. Not chugging for a couple then open chords for the other few.
Definitely. Should be the exact same thing pre-recorded and reamped
A couple of these sound "phase-y". I assumed these were all mono with a 57- but are there 2 mics in the mix? Idk this daw but are those all stereo signals? If so, it's hard for us to tell if that phase sound is the way the cabs sound or if it's just "user error" in the mic distances. All due respect. Still an amazing video. Thank you for it.
i hear room sound in the isolated tracks, and yeah they sound phase-y. they also change abrubtly without matching the notation on the screen
Some sound like they are being played through a tube lol. I recognize that sound when my speakers are out of phase in the room. Not sure if that is what is going on here but it is noticeable.
Could you do the same but with Greenbacks? Extremely informative
how did you position mics at RK ? some tests have phase problem
I gotta go with the 1960 Marshall because it is so natural sounding on every frequency range. To my ears there is barely even a close second.
Came to the same conclusion!
I feel it's the worst
I like extrem metal not grunge
Really should have played that first chugging riff on all cabs first, then play the open chords type style for the 2nd half of the test, in my opinion of course.
Some cabs got chugging others didn’t. I do appreciate the work, though so thanks.
Was this the exact same V30 mic'd in each cab? Or from the same set of 2x/4x V30's placed in each cab? Or was it the various V30's that were already in the cabs? There are different versions/eras of the V30, such as the MIC T3904 vs UK Mesa Boogie T4416. Were all of the cabs wired the same in series or parallel? Same Ohms load? Same amp head/modeler used for each recording?
Engl 4x12
Mesa Boogie 2x12
Peavey 5150 4x12
👍👍
boogie 2x12 or bogner for the chain with the neve, for an api the 4x12s
Did you replace the speakers in the cabs that don't come with V30s stock? And what amp did you use? Important questions.
Signal chain?
Your riffs are on point! Do you play in a band?
whoa that framus 412
The orange sounds like a phone speaker from the 80s...
Surprised from the Friedman. Didn't expect that.
What was the head being used?
What ohms? 8 or 16? I want to swap out the stock speakers in my Marshal Lead 1960a for V30s but I like the 8 ohm V30s and the lead1960 is a 16ohm cab. Can I make this happen?
What head is he using?
What is the mic position?
Hi! WTF at 2:18 and some others? What cabs did you use? Slant or straight and where is which?
Vyacheslav Lysenkov it even happens at 6:02 when each clip is soloed out. Same exact thing. Obviously a lot of these have phase issues within them but this one is just a clear editing software issue. How it changes out of nowhere. It's a shame bc this video is well done in every aspect besides the actual point of the video. They'd make us all very happy if they reposted this using only 1 57 as the reference. Instead of one left and one right without paying attention to the phase correlation. Left and right wasn't even necessary to begin with! GRRRR it makes me mad. Bc what a nice collection of cabs to compare. Oh well.
Mesa and EVH for me
did you record both Friedman speakers?
Are these Impulse Responses or mic-to-cab recorded?
These are recordings, but we've captured every IR from each.
What speakers are in the Bogner Closed Back 2x12's? Thanks.
V30's, probably UK made, maybe with a special bogner voicing, but I'm not sure about that
I have one, the oversized bogner closed back has Chinese vintage 30’s.
@@jarrethaley5581 chinese made? Are you sure it's stock lol?
@@jarrethaley5581 sometime bogner are a mix of v30's and g12t75's
@@luca4352 Mine is stock. From my understanding, pretty much all production cabs made with vintage 30’s excluding Mesa and Bad Cat have Chinese made Vintage 30’s. Bad Cat has their own speaker made by celestion but the sticker on those say Vintage 30 made in the UK. I own a handful of them! Just speaking from experience.
1:27 Whoa.
the mesa road king and engl fucking slayed
This is one of the best videos and people who complain about it should think again. Thanks for the video.
I really like the Marshall since it's so easy to mix. EVH and Boogie cabs were also fantastic!
It's actually not very well done. Lots of issues with it.
Really? The video is not done very well whatsoever
3:48 Engl
VS
7:14 Peavey
Ok Peavey my favorito ♡
I guess that Engl is a Pro and not a Standard?
Idk if it was the processing, but they don't sound any different. And they should because cabs you know? If I were amp heads or guitars or pickups, I'd be like, yeah, that makes sense, but cabs make the biggest difference in sound or should anyway.
The Marshall 1960 is loaded with G12T-75? Or with V30s?
V30
@@ChopTonesOfficial Really thank you!
Are these real cabs or sims?
What is going on with the audio in this? It sounds likes everything is mic'd through a tube sometimes. :/
Also, changing the riff is kind of distracting.
Spent too much time on the repetitive two string single note to accurately represent the OS Mesa 4X12 cab. Didn't adequately demonstrate what they can do with power chords.
Mesa Rules!
For ge 300 lite??
Yes
These all have tons of weird phasing issues with the sound. Was this not just a single mic? The Mesa oversized 412 also changed tones half way through its clip. And the Bogner just did as well.
So did the marshall 2551 lol
Sounds double tracked left and right and some of the takes just not played in sync very well.
@@DouglasComical Glad it wasn't just me who caught that. This video has issues.
Came here to post this. Glad I'm not the only one
roadking - looks like bfmw poison era

Engl
Friedman all day for me
By a mile. The Mesa 2x12 and Peavey 5150 equal second for me.
You can't be serious...
A 1960 cab doesnt have v30s... not unless its a vintage cab.
You could put a V30 in an every cab :)
stupid comment
no thx how? I was just stating that stock 1960 cabs dont have them.
1960AV (and 1960BV) has the Marshall Vintage speakers, which yeah aren’t exactly Vintage 30’s
Probably all IR....
You got some really weird phasing issues
Lol, the framus sounds like someone is playing in another room
And if you swap speakers? :)
Sounds like there's a huge difference in volume too. Maybe you should have set the volume right listening to it first?
TheMausymaus The Framus is the only gab with a metal front grill and they come loaded with greenbacks stock, maybe that has something to do with it.
@@Altarofpigs No, the Engl have also a metal and it's don't change anything to the sound...
sound kinda weirdy tubey
mesa 2x12 is the best ever
I don't like any of the proposed models...they sound strange to me...I prefer the stock cab of Fractal or line6 products...
Have you ever heard a microphoned cabinet? Because these are not digital cabs.
