A perfectly serious, yet unscientific, comparison of the 4x12 cabs I have in my studio. What's your favorite?! Comment below!
GEAR USED:
Bondi Sick As, Marshall JMP 2203, Mesa Dual Rectifier Rev G. Mics were two Shure Unidyne III SM57s in fredman mic pattern.
That Mesa V30 and SM57 combo is a classic for a reason. The guitars just sit in place and gives so much room for the drums and bass. The guitars also jumped out and were more in your face with the Mesa V30. Tried and true.
The Mesa Creamback and the Orange Greenback were also great sounding. More mid to low-mid focused. I've never liked the sound of the Orange PPC V30 cab. They always sounded wooly, muffled, and loose to me, but a Greenback worked wonders in that cab.
All in all, I would probably use different cabs for different tones, allowing the ambient, rhythm, and lead parts to sit better with each other. But this was a great example of the importance of your cab and speaker in your signal chain.
oh for sure, it would be a 900 hour video if I broke down EVERY combination together, but the idea of using different cabs for different tones is EXACTLY the move I would make in a tracking/mixing scenario also!
also yep, mesa v30 + sm57 is never wrong, that's what I always say!
Orange cabs have also been a love/hate thing with me, bc on one hand nothing sounds like it which is cool for some things, but on the other hand nothing sounds like it.. for a reason haha
Greenbacks sound great. Especially in the Orange. I thought the basic bitch T75 did a good job too.
Came from the no dialog video, and now I'm even more stunned by the content quality. As for the cabs:
1. Mesa Creamback
2. Orange Greenback
3. Marshall Greenback
appreciate the love man! that creamback is a killer speaker!
Okay the Mesa V30 is the gold standard
I also loved the greenback in the Orange
and number 3 is a speaker that I used to hate with a passion: T75 in the 1960A
I think a blend of the Mesa + Orange would be KILLER!
it 100% is. my band did a cover that'll come out someday haha, but its mesa v30 and orange v30 blended and BOY does it rule.
and yeah the 1960a is a SLEEPER pick man, its so fat sounding.
very cool vid. Mesa V30, Marshall T75, and Orange/greenbacks were my favs. I used to think 75's were junk until owning them, too much listening to the internet.
that's the REAL truth! Too many people saying things that they heard someone else say that they heard someone else say that they heard someone else say that they heard someone else say..
Awesome tones and great content man, you got yourself a sub !
thank you so much!
Marshall Greenback #1. Then the Marshall 75s #2. Then the Orange w/ greenbacks. All sounded super rad, though.
Context is everything in choosing guitar tones for the mix. Great job. Cheers!
most definitely, that's the hardest part of trying to pick a "best" combination!
1. Orange Green back
2. Mesa creamback
3. Orange v30
ohhhhhh yeahhhhh great minds think alike
@@CoryBrunnemannThanks for doing such a great shootout! I might mix in two cream backs or green backs into my ppc now.
@@andyblakely7576 I love that cab, and I espcially love having the options!
Mesa V30
Marshall Celestion T75
Great, thanks!!!
Great Video! They all sounded good, but I feel the creamback Mesa was arguably first, then the v30 Mesa. Surprisingly, I really liked the g12t75 in the jcm900 cab for third...
The 1960 t75 is a shocker IMO, sounds WAY better than people give it credit for
Also, can you please specify which type of greenback is used in the orange cab ? sounds awesome !
its taken from the Marshall TV cab, made-in-england Greenback, sorry I'm not sure more than that!
Great video
Thanks so much it was a lot of fun to make!
The basson has killer low end
I love vids like this. I noticed I wasnt as picky with the cabs when it came to the metal recordings, especially with low tunings.
For me the determining factor for what I like best with low tunings is how does the low end get handled? Don’t want just massive woof. And then it’s a matter of taste
Fredman is 55°, not 45°.
My favorite is the Greenback for that woody grind, then G12T-75 and Vintage 30.
yep you're correct, that's my brain just looking at it and going "duh that looks like 45" haha! The Black Moon Recordings clip make me not have to think any more!
You should make cabinet impulses for all these.
I wish I would have, but also if I did that, I'd want to do more comprehensive than just fred57 setup I think!
@@CoryBrunnemann That would be rad.
1. MESA V30
2. ORANGE GREENBACK
3. MARSHALL T75
That Marshall T75 is a sleeper!
Subscribed!
1. Mesa Oversized w/ Creamback
2. Marshall 1960TV w/ Greenback
3. Orange PPC w/ Greenback
Guess I like a little bit more mid bump rather than scoop. Which is funny because when an amp is in the room, I always prefer the feel when mids are scooped and there are more lows and highs, but on stage I always turn the mids up more on mid scooped cabs with v30s, just for more presence and clarity in a live mix.
yesssss the amp in the room sound is deceiving when it comes to recording and what sounds great in a mix!
Great shootout vid, awesome production! Just a suggestion, chapters would really help with this kind of vid.
Keep up the good work, Cory!
hmm they're supposed to be there, I'll get on it!
Great video! Kind of curious if there's a cab or two that you end up using the most or if it really depends on the project.
Of course, I’m gunna address that in a future video after getting a bunch of comments!
All great guitar tones aside, those drums man, damn...
Thanks my man! First song is actually live drums from a country song I wrote with a guy, I just took the drum mix out, and wrote a rock riff to them haha! Second one is some MIDI stuff I wrote up for this!
@@CoryBrunnemann haha awesome! :D
Mesa supremacy
ain't never been bad
Nice riffage! I'm not a big T-75 fan but that Marshall 900 was pretty killer in this demo.... For me though, the Orange with Greenbacks comes out on top. Even with the basketweave cloth that typically tames some of the celestion "rattle" they really pop in that cabinet. I'm guessing the Creamback in the Mesa is the H not the M? The Basson is definitely at the bottom. That being said...in THIS shootout... Orange Greenback > Marshall T75 > Orange V30... the Mesa V30 would be runner up. Good job!
Love all the insight! Unfortunately I’m not the most knowledgeable on gear so idk what H vs M for the creamback is or what I have.
And yeah I was never a t75 fan but I was put onto them by Mark Lewis talking about his affinity for 1960b cabs. I got an A for a good deal and just decided to rock it for a bit!
@@CoryBrunnemann Right on! Well, you definitely did a great job. I'll check out your other videos for sure. The Creamback H has more highs and output than the M, which is a little smoother and darker. The output sensitivity of the M is similar to the T-75 and Greenback while the H is more like a V30 (100db). That's why I figured yours is the H (sounds a little brighter) but I could be wrong. There's the H75, M65 and the Neo... basically 3 different magnets that affect the sound and output. I like them all, but if I had to chose one, it would be the M but we all know tone is subjective.
Wish you dident change the speakers in the cabs. Really would have loved the audio with the stock speakers. 😀
I did all the stock speakers AND changed speakers in the video! So they're both there, you can even compare the stock to the replaced speakers!
1. Mesa Creamback( is it 65 or 75?) 2. Mesa V30 or vice versa 3. Marshall t75
I THINK 65… I’ll have to check on it when I can!
For riff 1, I like 1960TV with the greenback the best. I also like the Mesa V30. The Marshall 1960 with the g12t-75 sounds the worst to me for this riff, but for riff 2 I like the 1960 g12t-75 best
The 1960TV cab is so slept on, I used it for my bands album exclusively on the main rhythm tracks. It’s different, it breaks up nicely, I love it.
Well done test man. Why'd you go with the friedman technique? Just curious
I don’t love single mic setups, and the friedman is an easily repeatable combo with the clip!
Also, I do like the way it sounds, so that’s a plus haha
@@CoryBrunnemann that's cool man. Ive tracked a few albums with the friedman technique but had mixed results. Most of the videos i post now are straight on, but I use many microphones on different speakers and blend however the mix calls for. Anyways, cheers!
@@aheadofmetal I def like the straight on mic louder, not both mics even volume
1) orange celestion
2) orange celestion
3) orange celestion
they're both celestions fool, v30 or greenback?
@@CoryBrunnemann oops I am 20 IQ but the greenbacks 150%
Mesa Creamback
Marshall V30
Orange V30
