I tried oil painting once. I tried painting a wee landscape for my Grans Christmas one year. It was so hard but I tried my damnedest to make something look half decent. Then after it was finished I sat it down in my living room in front of the radiator to try and dry it and my cat walked across it leaving green foot prints all over my house. I had to wash the cat in the bath and it nearly ripped my arm off. That's a true story BTW so I'm hoping after watching this video it will be a better experience. Thanks man 😂✌️❤️
tip: drying with heat works for acrylics, not oils. Oil paint must undergo a chemical process to "cure". To speed the drying time you would have to add drying medium into the paint. When I finish painting I put it somewhere out of reach for my cat, also I don't lay it on the back but on the side to reduce the amount of my cats fluffy hair that will stick to the paint.
This video inspired me to get back into my passion: painting! Life gets so busy but I need to make the time for it and this video truly moved me to make that push
Started oil painting this year, was never really into acrylics, did a bit of watercolor but oil paint made me fall in love :)) hahaha. Idk why but the fact that acrylic dries so fast just freaks me out
I've been using Acrylics for years, just recently started working with oils. Focusing on getting better with them primarily for portraits, where I need longer drying times. But also practicing using oils with my landscapes too, just to get used to the feel of them, etc... Nice vid!
Good tips here. I enjoying listening to Bad Friends and YMH while I paint also. Enjoy your channel a lot. Also enjoy all the other youtube artists channels you mentioned. I add in Paint Coach, he's got a good one and is pretty informative/teaching specific. Keep up the great work Slew. I've got 5 paintings in the works right now, you inspired me to stop procrastinating and get some work done on those.
I am learning how to use soft pastels to paint! I always thought that you used pastels for drawing but if you want to create real artworks your “painting” with pastels! I have been a working artist for years and working with pastels is a wonderfully new experience! Thank you for sharing your oil experience! I enjoyed watching your video and I am looking forward to seeing you create future content on your oil painting journey!
C'mon Mark don't be stingy! I paint miniatures with acrylic and I'm about to branch out into oil on canvas. Helpful video and I love that the language of art is universal. Thank you!
New haircut! Looks good! I've watched almost all ur vids, keep it up! Im a beginner! Your videos inspire me to paint more! My aunt is an artist so she teaches me. I got 1 oil painting under my belt! 😁
Very well done video! I'm a pinstriper/sign painter by trade so working with oil enamels is familiar, but not necessarily in this capacity. Definitely inspired me to jump into some legit oil painting.
Love the vid . I have to try harder to get through the ugly phase and finish anyway . I often stop or just paint something else because I think the paintings not working . Thanks for all the tips . ❤️🇦🇺❤️✌🏾✌️✌🏻

I really like that you did something like this! I think it could be a very easy trap for people to accidentally fall into if they think that only knowledge matters - rather than both knowledge and experience. Excellent work my friend
Try to flip the canvas for 180° so you can see the proportions of the face in a better way. That trick helped me A LOT. Really enjoying your content! Keep going!!
hey SLEW! since you read fantasy novels, did you know that "slew" is an actual past tense word? example: they asked you a slew of questions and you mercilessly slew them down expertly. haha. keep up the good work, Its pretty dam entertaining to see how many different ways you've come up to basically say the same thing. Its commendable to have willingness to help out, even if it seems redundant. Truly you are a patient young man and your awesome artwork is placed by a worthy hand indeed . keep on slewin it
I'm actually watching this at 12:40am and decided to give skillshare a try. I just signed up at a great discount for $69. for the first year. Not being sponsored by skillshare, however I am totally excited with starting my adventure tomorrow. I'll let you know how it goes. Can't wait.
Really cool to watch your progress ☺️ . I'm applying many of your lessons in my art there's an while, and i can already see the difference. Practicing is the key 🎨☕🤓!
Thanks for the helpful tips. I'm just beginning with oils and really appreciate you sharing your knowledge. Love this painting and all your other pieces!
Saw some Winsor Newton paint...around here it is on clearance at Michaels...also at a Michaels in Canada. May want to check them out if they are close to you.
Great video man , love your content. Quick question , did you prepare your canvas before painting with oils ? If not I would suggest you do it , apply a layer or two of acrylics before , really helps with the process after. Keep on painting!
Just curious as to why you sketched it and painted it from the sketch as opposed to just skipping the sketch and just painting it from the photo as the source reference.
Hey! gorgeous painting, you always motivate me to get up and paint. I wanted to ask what podcasts do you enjoy listening to while painting? I finished all the ones I listen to, and am looking into starting something new.
I paint with acrylics and do my best to replicate what most oil painters do. It’s a complete definite process but is still extremely enjoyable and still a great skill
@@Doginthesleep look into getting a retardant if you haven’t already. They’re not over expensive and slow down that process. I 100% feel that though. It can be more than frustrating
Man those painting are all awesome ! You nail portraits . I'm practicing with pencil currently cuz I'm awful in portraits :) Btw dude ana mural painting in future ?
actually oil paint is much more user friendly than acrylic.. oil gives you more time to refine your paint because it dries much longer, though there are substance you can mix in the paint to fasten the drying period. or mix that substance in linseed oil. linseed oil is good especially if you are blending, if you dont want heavy strokes esp on the face then you need linseed to wet your mixture. it also refine your strokes, sometimes you get a lot of bad strokes because of that dry brush,a bit of linseed can fix that.

Great video. It makes perfect sense about balance between obtaining knowledge and actually putting the brush to a canvas.
