SLEW yasss you did a dope job on this video I love it! I paint almost everyday but never a self portrait so I might get in on this though I’m always trying to improve! 💖💖💖😃
Imo the second one turned out the best, but the very first one really reminds me of Norman Rockwell's style ! I like that one too. What would happen if you used pink instead of white, would that even work to reduce the whiteness you're not happy with? Also what if you did an under painting? Like tried one portrait with a green under painting & one with a red under painting? I've never painted with oils, so I'm genuinely curious! I also think the whole composition is pretty cool as well!💙
Self critiquing is actually very important for artist to grow and in art class you have to do self assessment and peer assessment so it’s expected of artists to do that
Dude. This is phenomenal. Usually I'm not that interested or too scared to do art challenges, but I'm definitely doing it this week. Your use of colours and tones in your paintings is beautiful. It's awesome to see an artist who also sketches out their subject matter free-handed using a photo reference rather than just tracing it. It's a great skill to have, so I applaude you! Instead of painting, I'll be using a ballpoint pen so hopefully they turn out as well as yours has!
@@MetaMessiah good on you mate! When you start out, tracing or grid methods do help to get familiar with anatomy (and tracing is also used in animation so it's definitely a necessary technique), but definitely practice by tracing to become familiar, then just go for it!

Hi Slew - I'm an artist-designer that's been around for 72 years and I just wanted to say how much I like your work, your energy, and skill. I think you're much too modest about your abilities and I hope you're getting lots of portrait work. Surely the world will beat a path to your door. Keep it up, have fun and be open to lots of all the information that's out there.

It's really interesting to see you juggle with the not-so-simple concept that's a self-portrait. I personally love drawing faces, but I'm more of a graphite wh*re XD So it's very refreshing to see you use paint as a medium. Lots of people underestimate the challenges that artists can "face" (pun-intended) when they undertake the task of making an autoportrait, the most familiar subject, because of how critical we can get towards ourselves and how trained our eye is to spot all the little mistakes we make, that's why I always had the tendency of avoiding self-portraits altogether. I've finally had the courage to make one with graphite, and as a challenge I've done it upside down 😂... Not quite up to what you've achieved here, but it was definitely a fun experience. Keep up the good work buddy 😊
I love doing portraits of myself next to each other to test out color palettes. The most I did was three portraits in oil next to each other. Stunning portraiture skills.
As a frustrated artist myself whom has pretty much gave out to adulthood and abandoned every dream i had of becoming a full time artist... This is very impresive and motivating! Great work!
Yeah bro I dug that video, that looked like a lot of fun. I need to get on the same work ethic as you. I find myself procrastinating more than painting and drawing.
Been watching from the first studio build. This video sealed you with the artists I admire and you are in good company. The new studio is looking sweet and I'm loving the drawings you started in it.
I love art, it brings me so much joy while I'm going through intense chemotherapy. Art truly saved my life, when I was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer I was suicidal but putting my fear and despair into my art gave me an outlet for my feeling and stopped me from taking my own life to the relief of my wife. Even after my journey to teach myself for almost 8 years I'm still finding new methods, techniques and styles. I'm not into the abstract expression movement, my passion is in renaissance and comic book/graphic novel styles. I feel that these two styles have soul and can sometimes be played with. Itll be interesting to take some paintings from the renaissance period and recreate them in the graphic novel style. That what I love about art, there are absolutely no limits to what can be done and the only barrier is the imagination.
The first time it can be intimidating but the more you do the easier it becomes. I stretch all of my canvases now instead of buying them because it's cheaper and the surface is better than the factory smooth finish of store bought ones. If you want any help I can give you a couple tips.
When you are using wooden stretcher bars make sure they are straight and not warped. If they feel too tight when putting them together give them a light tap with a hammer so that they're flush. Ensure that you have a two inch border of canvas around your frame and make sure that the beveled side is facing down as that is what the canvas is going to grab on to. Make a mark using a ruler on the canvas and make a small tear with scissors and then tear it by hand so that it goes straight. Pull one corner firmly over the frame and put one staple in the middle of each side so that the canvas is evenly distributed. For the corners it's difficult to describe in writing, but try to fold with the edge of the frame so that it comes out straight. Make sure to pull the canvas tight as you staple, but you don't have to exert yourself as the gesso will tighten it even more. Your staples should be at least an inch apart. When you are finished stretching it take a hammer and tap the staples to make sure they went it. If it sounds like a drum when you tap the canvas it's ready to prime and paint! Sorry for the lengthy response hopefully that's helpful, worse case scenario if you make a mistake you can use a flat head screw driver and pliers to remove the staples it's very forgiving.

SLEW You are AMAZING! You paint so casually yet the likeness is spot on! I haven't been even interested in oils, right now I'm barely drawing. (I let life get in the way😢) You make oils look fun and not at all stuffy as some artists do. I'm going to check out your channel when I get my art supplies unpacked (moving sucks!) even tho I'm more into drawing at this time, I have never seen a likeness come out of just a few of the first marks & measurements & I could def use some education in that direction. I really love your style (for you) of both your art & video making. Thank you for both!!!
Is starting with the nose an academic method of drawing faces? Im a self taught artist, and the loomis method never worked for me, and i found that starting with the nose is the best way for me to judge the rest of the proportions and really capture the face. Just found it interesting that you do the same thing and didn’t know if it was a trained thing or a preference. Thanks!
Will Rogich not really sure. I think there are a lot of methods out there for sure. I don’t really have one nailed down. I kinda fumble around till I think it’s right. But you can arrive the same I think for starting anywhere
SLEW true that. Just nice to see someone doing something that i do hahah. So i know im not a crackpot for starting where i start with portraits😂 by the way, make some more watercolor art! Get that arches paper i told you about and go to town. I think you could create some really cool stuff in the medium🙂
With the people I've talked to the only successful truly good method is the one that works well for you. When I've read interviews from ppl like Loomis they usually reveal that they don't strictly follow their own rules even - e.g. Zorn palette is great and he used it tons. But he had tons of other colours around too for when he wanted them. I know when I do figures some poses are best with line of action, some with value building, some with gesture, some with bean body construction, etc. The more strict academic route I'd say is Bargue casts (best for pre-impressionist work) with Niccolaides guesture construction, though Loomis (comics-ish) and Bridgeman (illustration-ish) all clearly give results. And each extends to different styles more effectively. From what I've read the best method is to look at how an artist you like approaches and breaks down the visual image for 1-10 months then try something else. The parts that work will stick with you. The parts that hold back.... Well look carefully and see what you like in your work. Ultimately if it works for you and makes the art you want it's not wrong :) (but it's always worth experimenting with different methods). So starting with the nose sounds great to me
I think you can either go for the eyes, or anywhere else. Since the eyes are what people usually look first, there is some pros in starting with those and making sure you get it right. But if you don't like starting this way, then anywhere else is fair game.
Me: *watches the beginning of the video realizes he's making his own canvas and not buying one* Wow thats cool Also me: *realizes hes making his own canvas, freaks the fuck out cause we love a multi talented man*

Molto bene!
You mean the artists who just trace their work and color it like a glorified color book. Who can't take criticism, or reflect their own level.
Almost every artist hates their work while making it, likes it right after being done, and then hate it every time they see it afterwards

I hope you have a great day!

As a former teacher and artist myself, it is very pleasing to see a young man channeling many hours into art, which will give life-long pleasure and satisfaction. Others become expert skateboarders or gamers but art can lead to a career.
I have to commend you on not being vulgar, cursing or anything. It’s really awesome. I can learn from someone who respects themselves and others
I often skip to the end of painting videos but damn, this just gripped me big time! I really want to try it! Beautiful video and beautiful piece!
I think the second face is the best when it comes to lighting, colors, proportions and likeness, but all of em are pretty fun to look at lol.
Man, you having a go about your own painting. i wish I had half your talent. Nice job!

Can't wait to see if any of the tagged artists will take up the challenge! It is time-consuming but oh so interesting! Thanks!
It's just awesome how your youtube community has grown. I've been here since you had under 1000 subs. Keep up the awesome work ! big love from Germany!

youre super talented! humans and realism are so hard to convey on to a canvas but you did a fantastic job
Wow this is amazing. I never comment on art videos; I just like to watch. But this is truly art
I'm so happy I stumbled upon this video and watched a few of your other videos. I love how openly you talk about the process of creating, feeling like it sucks, and then pushing through it. I started a self-portrait series today, thanks for being a voice of inspiration :)
Fantastic! Congratulations!
Youre so GREAT at drawing self portraits
