The Gameboy Advance is a favourite of mine to cover on this channel. With such a wide variety of games on the console, there is a lot of weird and impressive titles to cover. This video, however, contains none of them. Because while there was a lot of high quality, incredible efforts to port games to the GBA, there were also a lot of stinkers. In this episode of Port Patrol, we look at three games that really deserved better. All time classic games, which recieved some of the worst ports imaginable to the system, all of which could easily duke it out for the title of worst video game ever made.

If anyone is curious about Super Empire it was a Russian developer based in Moscow and founded in May 2000 which made 2 games for GBA both released in 2002 and one game for the PS2. The GBA games being Earthworm Jim 2 which received negative reviews and Pink Panther: Pinkadelic Pursuit which received average to positive reviews. The PS2 game was called War Chess which was a 3D chess game for which I can find no reviews and was released in 2004. They also developed a 3D 3rd person helicopter simulation prototype for the GBA called Apache rescue for E3 2003. Their final project was a GTA knock off for the PC called Car Jacker which was published in Russia under the name Crazy Drive Away. They also created their own game engines and development tools for the GameBoy Colour and the GameBoy Advance.
Oh wow, nice researching skills! I've seen in other comments that apparently some of the devs went on to work for Postal III so it sounds like they had a quite mixed career!

I saw a comment from a developer of the EWJ1 port on another video. Apparently it was made by a couple people in 3 months, rushed out for the GBA launch window. They declined EWJ2, so Majesco hired these Russian devs for only 80k rubles apparently (roughly $2500 for the time?).

This is why earthworm jim 2 gba sucks:
•It was rushed, so it’s full of bugs & screen tearing
•It was developed by an inexperienced Russian team in 3 months
•The budget was only 1200$
•some songs are midi files ripped from the internet, (puppy love & udderly abducted)
•Majesco rushed them, not interplay, they just licensed out the Earthworm Jim brand to them
•SuperEmpire also developed a port of Pink Panther Pinkadelic Panic & it was equally terrible.
I've been subbed for a few months only so its nice to see the channel isn't dead. Really enjoyed the video!

I know it's not a great port but that Wolfenstein 3D port was a major moment in my gaming youth. Got me into FPS games, got me into Wolfenstein, got me into Doom, got me into Quake. Played the hecc out of that port when I was young.
At least some good came from the port! :')

I like the refresh... granted, I kinda forgot I was subbed to this channel over the past few months, so seeing a new vid pop up in my sub had pretty much zero expectations attached to it :) It was a pleasant surprise! And then checking out some other videos was a good refresh - I was like, "Oh yeah this dude does some awesome stuff, even if he doesn't like Sonic" :P The new style is cute, bright, poppy... it definitely has some nice energy, and if it makes you feel positive about future videos, than it's definitely the right move to make. Glad to see you back, and to be reminded of the channel! If you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go check out those videos on the Assassins Creed DS port and the Alone in the Dark GBC title

You can look up obscure companies directly on Mobygames. SuperEmpire was a Russian (Moscow) studio which was active in 2000-2003, which offered to develop licensed games cheaper and faster than anyone else. Judging by the result, they might have actually delivered on that promise. They also made Pink Panther GBA game and a Battle Chess knockoff on PS2, minus the actual talent that went into the original.
GBA Sonic the Hedgehog. I doubt it was made in-house, predominantly because of sound, they do have so many audio professionals there. It's become common around then for SEGA to co-brand games as Sonic Team if they're licensed from one of their properties, even if they weren't produced in-house, because the real original Sonic Team no longer existed by then, with Yuji Naka leaving. But also not a single name in the company or other company is credited anywhere on the cartridge data or in-game or elsewhere, so, inconclusive. Most of the cartridge looks vaguely like audio data, but i haven't tried to extract it. The credits you have found are incorrect, they're for the Megadrive/Genesis original, not for the port, in spite of what Mobygames and other data aggregators say.
One of the rumours has it that Sonic might be an uncredited Digital Eclipse production.
Oooh a mysterious Sonic mystery there! Guess they'd want people to think they actually worked on it for the anniversary!
@@LEXXPortPatrol I think fundamentally the issue is, everyone knew it was bad and nobody wanted to put their name to it. ROM image scrubbed so clean of any identifying information! Space wasn't an issue for sure.
According to Stealth, it's a custom engine, it's just one made of bugs and baffling decisions, carelessly thrown together. He also hasn't found any identifying information there, and he was surely much more thorough than i was. He has developed and shown a full performance port of his own with faithful gameplay. He also found via interviews, that by that time, SEGA had annotated and rewrote in Java the original Megadrive game's movement and physics faithfully while working on a J2ME port, and multiple teams in-house had access to that. Having that at hand wouldn't have rescued the performance, but it would have been an easily legible and almost-but-not-quite copy-paste usable reference that could have made the game at least behave faithfully, and whoever worked on the GBA port for sure hasn't seen it.

A lot of people I know get annoyed in my videos when I spend any time at all not directly talking about the games, but I *KNEW* that I had to mention that, otherwise I can imagine what all the comments would've been like if I didn't!
Looked up the individual devs on the credits screen of earthworm jim and actually managed to find some of the devs individually and looks like it was almost everyones first or second game sooo part of me would just assume inexperience caused part of that games issues.. although weirdly it turns out one of the devs went on to be the lead programmer of Postal 3 of all things lol

Officially you can play Earthworm Jim 2 on the Evercade, but it’s just the Snes rom, and not really a dedicated port. Still it means there are better ways to play it portably than the GBA version!

Stealth's GBA homebrew port of Sonic 1 should always be mentioned next to the official one, one random fan was able to port the game without any of the bizarre issues Sega's official release had so it certainly wasn't a hardware limitation.
Ah, if I had known about that I totally would have! I had a video I was working on halfway through last year all about Homebrew ports, maybe I could bring it back sometime and add it in? :)

When I played EWJ2 on GBA (which THANKFULLY I was able to refund) I ran into several game-breaking glitches due to objects not spawning. The boss of Lorenzen's Soil never spawned softlocking the game, and the bomb in the spaceship level never spawned making the level impossible to complete.

A guy did a Wolfenstein 3D homebrew port for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, and it's 99% what the PC version was. It plays every bit as good.

Intro idea - there were classics brought to us on home console in the 90s, and as technology improved at home.. it also improved on the go - which means old classics could now become new on the go titles. There were a lot of well executed ports, then there were downright disappointments. That’s what we are looking at today… Here are the worst ported classics on the GBA.
And wow EWJ looked brutal on GBA. People are crazy if they think it’s way too hard of a game, especially compared to so many NES and even SNES challenges.

I remember getting Wolfenstein for the GBA during a vacation with my family years back but somehow lost it in the airport on the way home.. So that version of the game always leaves me with a sour taste in my mouth.

A large contributor to the lackluster nature of Sonic’s gba port was that Sega decided to use the preexisting J2ME Java Mobile Phone version, which had a midi soundtrack, wonky physics as well as screen crunch, and ported it straight to gba warts and all. Also it’s unfortunately true that pretty much all that remained of Sonic team were tied up in two projects (06 and Secret Rings).

Max Payne on Gameboy Advance May actually take the cake, it’s top down and the button configuration is annoying by default. Not to mention the bullet time system is terrible in it.

The SNES version of Earthworm Jim 2 is available as part of Nintendo Switch Online's SNES emulator, so there currently exists a modern, portable and "free" version of the game on a modern system.

Hey, there is at least ONE funny quirk in Sonic GBA. Turning off the music in the game's options menu SIGNIFICANTLY improves performance, and turning off the sound effects gives a smaller boost.
And yeah, even when the game's running mostly smoothly the physics are still awful.

1:38 That's actually really upsetting. I usually don't judge the works of artists by who they are as an individual, but finding out that a person I used to admire as a child turns out to be an unlikeable prick really take the joy out of the games because I associate them with the artist.
Oh yeah, totally. I can get behind the idea of seperating artist and art to a degree, but it is also very hard when you find that artists viewpoints so offensive, and also directly conflicting with your own life, that you cannot really get away from the fact that by supporting the art, you are in turn supporting them. I'm a little disappointed to see some people take annoyance to the fact that I brought this up, I thought "dont be racist" wouldve been a pretty tame opinion to have but apparently not, but I also felt that I could not address the games without bringing it up to some degree x3
