Doom is a game that is no stranger to weird ports, which of course means I am no stranger to Doom. We have already had a look at Doom's GBA ports in a previous video, which was impressive enough by its own rights. But the moment I sat down and played through the Super Nintendo port of the game, I knew I absolutely had to cover it. Often trashed online for its poor gameplay, the SNES version of Doom is an absolute marvel, taking what should be impossible and making it real. But although many say it's impressive that it exists, often that comes with the large caviat that it doesn't play all that well. But I would go as far to say that this port holds up very well everything considered, and I will gladly jump to its defence.

Correction at 9:49 - Though the games source code does refer to the SuperScope and it seems to have been planned at some point, the final game doesn't support the SuperScope. I added that in after reading an interview with the games programmer, but obviously the implementation wasn't completed in time for the final build. Sorry about that!

Makes me wonder how the hell they would've made it work, considering Doom has autoaim and the Super Scope is a bulky sonofabitch with hardly any buttons

You can circle strafe in doom on the SNES, you just cant use the strafe and turning buttons simultaneously. It requires hitting the strafe buttons, then tapping the turn buttons, and so on.

Modern ports and the PC are of course lightyears ahead of SNES. But its contemporaries at the time had too many issues to be considered viable alrernatives. Missing sound (the rocking soundtrack is essential), or the fart music in 32x, inaccurate level geometry, there's a whole host of problems on competing platforms of its time. Too much to make any of them playable.
SNES version is interesting because of what the dev actually achieved with the limitations he was working around. The rest of the versions are not really feats of programming in the same sense that the SNES and even GBA versions were.
I gotta give them credit and mad respect for what they achieved back in the early '90s.

The thing about circle strafing being removed intentionally actually seems to be true - xttl at doomworld checked the source code and it specifically states “do not turn while strafing!” In the game code, which is baffling. I know it’s decades late, but he did patch it to add circle strafing back in! www.doomworld.com/forum/post/2160476

Same here. I remember putting in the cartridge and starting E1M1 for the first time and being amazed at how smoothly it ran and how it looked on the SNES. I was more than happy with it. That game stirred my imagination as a kid like no other game before it. I remember playing Computer Station (E1M7) for the first time and seeing movement in the windows from a building across the map and being amazed that it was imps throwing fireballs from so far away, and also scared by it, knowing I had to go there. The music in that map was also amazing. It's probably the first game where I experienced the kind of immersion that 3d games would eventually make possible. The SNES port of Doom might not be the prettiest, but it's one of my most fondly remembered games. The PSX version, for me, was the best version of Doom, and that even includes the original PC version.

I still find it far more unnerving than the pc version. Walking into the muddy 16 bit darkness on a worn out CRT TV was the stuff of nightmares. Combine that with the low resolution and slower move speed and its like a more survival horror version of the pc original. The SNES version was how I actually first played Doom and at the risk of sounding like a huge fanboy even this butchered port became one of my all time favorite games and in particular one of my favorite shooters. So when I finally played a good port of the game, my admiration only grew.
But in all honesty the SNES version really deserves a lot of credit. It's both insane and also confusingly upsetting how out of all the ports from back in the day the SNES version is one of the most faithful. Pretty much the only reason things got cut were for storage issues. Yes all the already dead bodies and inverted crosses were cut because Nintendo but in the case of the pre placed bodies, even that probably helped with the storage issues with how many things could be on screen. From what I've read not only does the SNES version have the least amount of levels cut but some version didn't even have the Cyberdemon and Spiderdemon. Keep in mind, every other port was far more powerful. The Jaguar, The 3DO, The 32X, The Playstation etc, and yet they all had more cut content than the severely less powerful SNES. How?! Why?! Obviously there's no reason to play this version in this day in age but I to believe the SNES version deserves to be remembered.
Especially because of the music. Hot take, the SNES soundtrack is better and that includes the more heavy metal action music. It's just has more bass and more of a thrash metal vibe. If it just wasn't so compressed than it wouldn't be a contest

I always loved this port. It raised the challenge severely. The music was amazingly rendered. The atmosphere was disturbingly good. I remember looking out the big window of e1m7 being able to see the exit switch.. something about the low render distance did that a lot of justice. Very liminal.

And because I know the first question will probably be "Where have you been the past 8 months?" here's what I wrote as an update on my Patreon last month that explains it pretty well, and where I plan to go next with the channel!!
Long time viewers of my channel know that extended periods without new uploads are a common occurrence on my channel. It was only really in the last 2 years that I actually committed to trying to create a video once a month. I feel motivated the most to create videos when I have stability. Every time there is a massive gap between videos, more often than not, aligns with a break in normality for me. So it used to be during exam and end of school years, when I’d have to focus a lot more effort into revision and deadlines, as was the case with why regular uploads stopped after the Assassins Creed PSP video I made.
The problem is, that was my last year of education. I started this channel when I was 15 and now, after wrapping up University in 2019, I’m having to transition from a life where I had very few responsibilities as a teenager/student, to one where I suddenly have many. And I will be honest, I have found this transition very difficult. I won’t go into too much detail, but basically my girlfriend and I found a flat right out of University, but I was unable to find a job for about 7 months which really did a number on my mental health. I was basically stuck in my flat that entire time, just like we are now in lockdown. In that time, I was able to make 2 videos, but once I finally got a job, I was mostly focussed on that, trying to make back the savings I had burned through on rent, so UA-cam kinda got pushed to the back of my mind.
My girlfriend and I only had the flat until this June, so last week we moved back in with her mum and I’m happy to say that I’m already doing better - I feel motivated to do this post at the very least!
      = What Now? =
What I wanted to do with the channel was a question I asked myself a lot of times during the past year. At my lowest points, I honestly felt like I wanted to abandon it, thinking there was no way I would ever be able to make another video for it. At other times I did make some progress towards creating videos, in some cases I even had the entire script written out and ready to be recorded, but there was always something holding me back, making me not want to finish it. Now that I have a clearer mindset, I know that I want to continue making Port Patrol, but I also know there are some things I want to change.
      = The Branding =
Fraki has been my online alias for as long as I’ve been active on the internet. What started as me mashing my keyboard to make a name for a Kongregate account in 2007, has stuck as my online name for the past 13 years. In many ways, I like that. I have changed a lot as a person since I started my UA-cam channel, but it feels nice to have that link to my younger self as a way of seeing how I grew and developed.
On the other hand, younger me was pretty #cringe and in all honesty? I don’t use Fraki all that often anymore. I feel like I’ve gone past it now, and although the name will forever have a special place in my heart, and a 7 second spot at the beginning of a lot of my videos that I can’t easily clip out, going forward I don’t think its the name I want to be known by on UA-cam anymore.
Over the next couple of weeks I’m gonna work on a new channel identity - I’m not actually going anywhere, I’m still going to use the same channel page and all my older videos are gonna be available to watch still, but definitely by the time the next episode of Port Patrol goes live, there’s gonna be some changes! I don’t have anything else to share about this new branding right now, which is a professional way of saying I haven’t come up with anything yet, but expect another update in the near future covering it - Probably alongside a video update too!
Part of me also wants to change the name of Port Patrol, if not for the single reason that when you google it, Paw Patrol is always the first result, but I doubt I will. Port Patrol just has too much of a nice ring to it to get rid of, and I have no other ideas for what I would change it to. So Port Patrol is here to stay!
      = Thank You =
That just about covers everything I wanted to talk about. I know it was a lot to read through, but thank you for reading it.

I modified my SNES copy with a crystal oscillator and overclocked the SUPER FX2 Chip to 27Mhz, followed instructions online. Frame rate was slightly higher and input lag was significantly better. I've since sold the modified cart and now have a FXPAK PRO (SD2SNES renamed due to legal issues with the SD trademark), and I use the "overclock SUPERFX" option which reduces input lag and speeds up frame rates even more and makes it feel so much better. I'd wholeheartedly recommend a ROM with circle strafing fixed on an FXPAK PRO / SD2SNES PRO
    I. LOVE. SNES. DOOM. Blew my mind back in the day, I loved it so much that it started my love for the series (and I started creating WADS for the PC version) and caused me to buy doom or acquire doom for every single electronic I owned that could run it.

Also, Doom for the SNES has a higher frame rate than Doom for the Panasonic 3DO because the latter took 10 weeks to make, and Randy Scott, the CEO of Art Data Interactive, had no programming skills, and depended on others to do his bidding on making games. SNES Doom also has features that make the game easier, like how instead of the shotgun spreading its bullets, it's a direct hit, allowing you to kill a demon in 2 hits with ease. Also, the rockets from the rocket launcher deal more damage. This allows you to kill the Baron of Hell in 3 to 4 hits, instead of 5 to 6 in the MS-DOS version. Also, the Cyberdemon and Spider Mastermind are no longer immune to splash damage, so you can pump rockets at them as you please. The game also has a Japanese version which contains changes, like regardless of difficulty you can play any level you desire, while in the American/European version, playing higher difficulties allow you to access all episodes. Also, in the ending screen for the JP version, instead of the original text from the PC version, it has shorter and simple text telling you what's going on, like "Congratulations! You've beaten Knee Deep in the Dead. The next episode is The Shores of Hell". Probably so that Japanese players can easily understand it, since they only speak short English sentences. Also, also, according to John Romero, the SNES version was created without their knowledge, but when Randy Linden came and introduced them the SNES port of the game, they were like "Hell yeah!" and licensed its release. Also, also, also, the game was programmed in an Amiga computer.

The thing about Doom for the SNES is it's a miracle it's even running, given the hardware it's on. The 3DO and Saturn, though, genuinely could've gotten perfectly fine ports of Doom but they were effectively sabotaged. One by a manager who didn't seem to understand how porting games works and stuck it all on one person and one by John Carmack himself apparently favoring unplayable framerate over warpy textures. Ironically, the SNES version was the most faithful port at the time, since they couldn't just throw the Jaguar version on it with minimal edits. It even included the Spider Mastermind and Cyberdemon.

Randy Linden is an absolute god for getting this port made with no tools, no source code, and a limited time frame. He literally built a functional version of Doom from scratch here. And as a bonus, it actually ports nearly all of the PC versions levels accurately, and nearly all of the enemies too. Even Playstation Doom lost a bunch of levels that are present and correct on SNES. In fact, pound for pound, the SNES port may actually be the most accurate conversion of Doom 1 to a console.
Not saying it's the ideal version of Doom on consoles, but it's still very under-rated.
