- I'm trying to get to know this 1986 Mariner 5HP outboard more and uncover the cause of the lack of a cooling-water tell tale. The investigation isn't over, but it's all part of becoming more familiar with the equipment I'll take with me when I depart for an extended voyage on my Cape Dory 25D.
Camera: Underwhelming GoPro Hero 8
Merch (for those that can't live without it): voyage-dreams.creator-spring....
I really appreciate you documenting this. This allowed me to rebuild an identical mariner/Yamaha two-stroke. It was given to me by a guy I know, and he had no idea what condition it was in. It was missing all kinds of stuff, but I was able to rebuild it. Runs like butter. I can’t believe how much better it operates than my old Johnson seahorse. I’m fan of that seahorse, but it’s night and day.
Also, the telltale does tend to run like that. I noticed I had to cycle it through reverse and Ford gear to get a good stream of water. It doesn’t seem to prime well in neutral.
@@erickeith1466Thanks for your comment. I'm not sure why cycling the gears would make a difference, but I'll certainly give it a try
owen how nice to see you back,
And the storyline continues! Nice side story to keep viewer interest, Owen. Plus, good learning videos about small outboard motors.
Thanks for your kind words, Alfred!
Thank you for your helpful information, got mine pumping water again better than ever. Mine had corrosion from salt water and was a easy fix after a good clean.
You're going to figure out that those little bits of the impeller are what's blocking the coolant flow... Plastic/rubber doesn't disintegrate, it has to go somewhere. Unless it's biodegradable, which an impeller is not... Bits of the impeller has to go somewhere.
Our tender is powered by a old two stroke 8hp Nissan. Initially did not idle at all but just a breakdown and cleaning of the carberator did the trick. I did learn all about outboard water pumps from your video. Thank you
You're welcome, MD. I"m glad the video was helpful.
Thanks for sharing
What happened to those one pull starts! Take some wire and poke up in the pee port. Probably has some mineral deposits in it.
Its maybe impeller bits. Try putting a piece of metal wire in the tell tale output and doing it back and forth. It maybe clogged. After, test again.
Otherwise the waterpump housing isnt good or you have a deep clog.
How did you find the parts for it? I'm having a hard time with my 87 odd serial number

Do you have stock like this outboard sir.
Sorry, I don't understand your question. Could you rephrase it?
what goes on that black mount?
Do you mean the large, trough-like tray behind the pull start? That's for the motor's original tool pouch.
@@VoyageDreams yea thanks
