Important factor to consider for commercial vs NATO specifications on stated velocity: Commercial ammo makers use an industry standard of 24 inch barrels and measure the velocity from the muzzle. NATO specs call for a 22 inch barrel for 7.62x51 and 20 inch barrels for 5.56x45 measured at 25 Meters (82 feet) down range.

I was taught it's not the head space that's different. It's the jump to the lands that's different. The larger jump allows any over pressure to escape.
The increase in head space is actually a slight difference in the shoulder (I think I made a mistake, taper diff. Is in the neck) taper when they cut the chamber... thus a thinner 308 will stretch at the shoulder (edit: meant to say neck) and at the head.
I was taught this at a facility that produced ammo, I was a teenager at the time. The old man telling me this handed me a reamer for both calibers , the answer to this debate is right there.
Thanks for sharing your information in the comments and UA-cam video

What was that bolt action rifle you called a 1903 style rifle ? It looks more like a British Enfield.

If you're referencing the first rifle in the slideshow, that's a Springfield 1903

The 1903 also uses a clip.

Even though you could just go to Springfield's website to prove him wrong on the 1903.

Sorry, but there are really no differences, and given that the number of actual NATO rifles with NATO barrels
SAAMI says for 308 Winchester a MAP of 52,000 CUP tested at 60 to 80 F. MAP is Maximum Average Pressure for the test sample of an ammunition lot.
What does the MIL Spec say for M-80?
It says 50,000 CUP MAP at 70 F then normalize (bake) the ammo to 125 F. MAP allowed is 55,000 CUP with the hot ammo
So, which rifle is expected to work at a higher pressure? The room temperature 308 or the Hot in the desert sun 7.62 NATO.
As to the headspace. Bolt actions usually have tighter headspaces in the interest of accurary. That does not mean that you are going to blow up your rifle is you use 308 in your AR-10, though the heavier grain bullets may not work the gas system correctly.

Yep. Just fudd lore. Not 1 verified case of a barrel blowing up in the 5.56 v .223 or .308 vs 7.62x51 debate. The most they can say is maybe one wears out the parts a wee bit faster.

And what about the brass thickness issue between commercial vs military brass?

Don't forget about harder primers for surplus semiautomatics with worn out firing pin springs.

There isn't, but 7.62 has thicker brass so it holds less powder

I've got a BUNCH of brass, both military surplus and commercial that I pick up for scrap or reloading (scrap bin for berdan primed, reloading bin for Boxer) and I got curious one day so I measured them with calipers. There's actually a lot of overlap between commercial and military case thickness. Even different batches of same brand/country had varied case thickness. On the whole, it generally doesn't matter unless you're reloading for PRS. Velocity variance was within 30 or so feet per second when I loaded up my thickest and thinnest case with the same charge to an M80 ball replica spec and shot them both out of my PTR-91. I use a Lee Classic Loader kit so making stuff on a whim is easy.
