This is going to be a fun project to watch! May I make a suggestion? If one of your Saab buddies has a steam cleaner that may help get even more of the grime off the engine and engine bay. Use your simple green first to let that soak for a few minutes then apply the steamer. Looking forward to the rest of this story!

That pile of crap loading up in the frame rail where the steering goes through, is why most northern cars have rusted through right there. Soooo glad to see yours is rust free!! Awesome!

"while im in there so i might as well change..." will bankrupt you trust me! but definitely worth changing all the mounts and the water pump since you have such easy access to them.

I recommend sealing the engine while you have it out, valve cover, oil pan, crank seals. It looks like oil leaks based on your cleaning plus if the age of the gaskets and seals. Its a great opportunity.

8:43 Wow, you where able to get a pretty "young" 5 Speed Gearbox. Looking at the numbers on that little plate, its the gearbox code that tells you what kind of box you have here.
So Autopsy`s code is GM 557 05, translatet into evolved monkey language it means:
GM: Gears Manual (GA is Gears Automatic)
5: Version of the Transmission (5 are usually the latest ones and beside the latest 4 Speed Boxes, are more robust)
5: Number of forward Gears (Some Boxes only had 4 Gears, the automatic had always only 3 Gears)
7: Gear Ratio of the Primary Drive (they are in the oval housing at front. 7 means a ratio of 0.78 and 32/25 number of teeth for input/output gears)
05: this is the variant of the box, but what exactly with variant is meant, is unknown to me

@@AutoAutopsy no problem, by the way, do you have interests in the official workshop manual for the gearbox? it includes the entire anatomy of the box, parts, tools and how you can take it apart. if you want to have it, same with the engine (that has some more intels than the bentley manual) just let me know, i can give both to you!

You removed all the natural rust protection! My 1989 900s sedan was saved from the junk yard by a great metal frame restorer/body tech. One section of the car that he did not have to touch was the engine bay! My slow leaking car has covered all the metal under it making rust impossible. The only "rust" issue I had early on in my ownership was from battery acid which damaged the metal under it. Still, in the long run cleaning it for you probably won't make much of a difference since you are in dry Arizona. Anyway, it looks great! I would love to see at least half of my engine and engine bay look as good.
