Let's hope Milwaukee stays this time. There's a fair amount of short ovals but we really need more superspeedways. Indy should definitely NOT be the only superspeedway!
My wife and I were there for 2015, which not too many others can claim. The Friday practice crowd this year was close to the race crowd that year, so I'm sure it won't be a historic low. But this race used to be PACKED in the 1990s, and IndyCar management needs to truly understand what went wrong so they can fix it.
David it was a pleasure meeting you today at the Milwaukee Mile! I really enjoyed our conversation. You truly are a great professional and a great asset to Indy Car Racing!
David gave a brief history. The track was established as a horse racing dirt track in 1876. In 1891 it was purchased as the Wisconsin State Fair Ground, which it still is. the first motorsports events were in 1903. This is the OLDEST RACETRACK ON THE PLANET. In the teens and 20's there were epic battles between Barney Oldfield and Ralph DePalma. In 1939 the first AAA Championship race was held. In 1947 it became the traditional race after the 500. Only in 1954 was the track paved. In 1963, Jim Clark won the first Indy Car race in a rear engined car. Also famous for the exploits of A.J Foyt, The Andrettis and the Unsers. Of our current players Scott Dixon and Will Power have won here and Graham Rahal and Katherine Legge have competed here.
Peacock is hitting Wisconsin hard. The first race at the mile and the first packer game against the eagles. 1990 at the mile was my first Indy car race.
I remember the Bourdais Milwaukee win. One of my friends who didn't like him was stunned he dominated an IndyCar race that wasn't a road course. And I as a Bourdais fan was stunned too but in a happy way.
David, I drove from Nebraska with a friend to West Allis, I'm geeked to be here for the first time! Been a fan for iver 50 years. But, I bought a copy of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel this Saturday morning and there isn't one story of even a mention if Indycar anywhere in the paper. Sports section is all college football , Brewers and Packers. What a letdown. Is there anybody from the paper there covering the action? Local TV however has a bunch of content on their web sites.
After the "olimpic"destruction of Rio's circuit, we finally have a new oval track under construction here in Brasil. A small one. 3/4 of a mile. Better than nothing, but it would be nice to have something just like the Milwaukee mile close by....
Look for a great weekend. Really like the double header concept and wish there were more of those. Wanted to make the trip from KC but had to bow out over some health issues.
Did Christian Rassmussen ever meet Eldon? How odd to have two Indy starters named Rassmussen. Spoke with Eldon once and drove his "Rent-A-Racer" on the track on the north west side of Indy. He built his own cars and was very proud of them. Surprised Milwaukee mile is bumpy. Carl Haas went to a lot of trouble to re-pave it while he was the track operator. I always suspected he became the track manager just to keep IRL off it but he did do a major resurfacing. There is some controversy about the Milwaukee Mile history as the Fairgrounds had a track for a very long time but I've heard that first track was in a different location on the fairgrounds and the current track was laid out much later. Anyway the current track was built long after the IMS, was though the PR for the track overlooks that very often.
I told everybody in the end the peacock was going to hurt the final product and then they don't want to show nothing on UA-cam that hurt the growth and how it gets out there to people who normally don't keep up with the racing
Are we going to talk about how current times are around 3 seconds slower than cart in the late 90’s? Oof. I sound like a complete pessimist I know but with them choosing to run on a holiday weekend that is also college football’s opening weekend, tv ratings and attendance will be terrible. Can’t see this race lasting long.
David, any idea if the $1mil challenge for an oval, street, and road win is going on this year? If so, I think Pato can clinch it with a win in the last 3 ovals.
I cannot attend the Saturday race because of a family reunion but I will be going on Sunday because I need Midwest ovals to stay. Also, imo, if we can get a different weekend than a holiday weekend I think it would be a better success as a double header
Yep since NASCAR is literally the big event on Labor Day weekend with the NHRA race on Monday being the 2nd biggest. It should fill a spot on an off week in the IndyCar schedule.
Ticket sales are abysmal. I’m going and have friends who live out there who I’m meeting and they say there’s absolutely zero advertising for the race. This race will be off the schedule in a few years, guarantee it. Penske Entertainment doesn’t believe in a marketing budget.
@@brandonross4742 not from what I’ve seen and heard. Attendance will be terrible. There’s already articles talking about how this is shaping up to be a train wreck.
@@markhunt7434 oh, so the series should just throw their hands up and let races fail? Great approach. The series has to do whatever it takes to be successful. It’s called investment.
I was there in 1957. Back then the first race after the 500 was Milwaukee. Contrary to what David says they were called “Big Cars” not Champ cars at least in the fifties.
You have a doubleheader IndyCar race a lot of tracks would like to just have one race you have a doubleheader, but you don’t have a scoreboard wake up Milwaukee mile should we guess who’s winning a race when they’re going around and around?🤔🤔🤔
I really don't think it's the track's fault, we attended for ~20 years and the race itself was always entertaining. The problem was the promotion just got worse and worse. As far back as I could remember, the Milwaukee race was always the weekend following the Indy 500 so while IndyCar was still fresh in the mind of sports fans, the Chicago airwaves were inundated with "The Mile... The Mile... The Milwaukee Mile!!!" commercials. Even if you weren't an IndyCar fan, you had heard about the race. This year I'm seeing more Facebook ads but we'll see--my wife and I are diehard fans so the ads don't affect us.
I just realized, two races at 250 miles each - this weekend is the Milwaukee 500!
Let's hope Milwaukee stays this time. There's a fair amount of short ovals but we really need more superspeedways. Indy should definitely NOT be the only superspeedway!
Milwaukee’s not a superspeedway

I was at the Milwaukee Mile in 1993 when Nigel Mansell won his first Oval Race. It was very exciting and incredibly memorable!
I was there, stood right next to Nigel Mansell in the pits. I couldn't believe it!
I became an IC fan in 1993 when Nigel came over from F1 👍
100% then driving it in the Indycar game at the time, my favourite track after Indy 500 and Road America 😊

@@TheAbhorrentTruth IndyCar/Champ Car racing was glorious back in the day. Before the dark times...
Conor Daly: I don't know about one practice. It feels kind of NASCAR-y.

Historical return with hopefully not an historically low attendance.

@@benmalec3258 I was there in 2015 and the crowd for practice today wasn’t even 10% of the race in 2015. Stop exaggerating.
The attendance is going to be horrendous. A lot of sections aren’t even going to be open.
Great !
I hope this is a success because IndyCar needs more oval races and Milwaukee is a great track.

It won’t be. Penske doesn’t believe in a marketing budget, but he does believe in conservation. That’s why they use the same cars since 2012.
Bullpen interviews becoming one of my favorite features!!
Should be held a week after the 500… like it used to be.
We should be happy it's back and a doubleheader

I'm just a random English dude, but even I know that Mike Mosley was the master at the second line at the Milwaukee Mile.
Absolutely. And the Pepsi Challenger Eagle is still the coolest Indycar ever.
