This movie was so dark, No Terminator movie to date has been as darkly themed as the first Terminator. That's what I love most about this one, It never tries to be funny.
This movie did have a much different tone than the sequels. I might even put this in the horror section. Unlike other terminators who would show emotion at times, this Terminator was completely emotionless, brutal, and ruthless. And Arnold's intimidating frame added to that.
Right on! Guess that's the best description of why the first is my favorite in the series. Until my late teens when I became a horror fan (thanks to playing the penumbra games), I think I liked T2 more, now the more I watch T2 again I think I like it less and less, but it's still the 2nd best anyway for me
As a kid I would play this scene alot on the VCR. Worn out the tape I believe. The music is just thrilling. And just the "point home sent" awe feel of it that absolutely nothing could stop a Terminator programmed to kill you. Thrilling and terrifying.

Arnold is amazing as the villain. No one has done it better since. Robert Patrick was a close second but the movements of Arnold are almost like some kind of stop mo horror.
He was the scariest but Robert Patrick was also brilliant he done it a fresh new way again I love them both as villains no one has ever or will come Close again

THIS was, and still is, a shocking scene. From the time you are born you are taught at home, school and hollywood that a policeman is your friend, he will protect and help you and bad guys and monsters can’t get you when you are with the police. It’s the culture you grew up in. This movie literally blows that away by having the monster/bad guy walk right into a whole police station and mow his way through an army of police looking for his victim and the good guys dressed in blue cannot stop him. Btw, this is how the movie should sound. Leave sound effects alone. The “remastered” “improved” gunshots sound like BB guns.
Same goes for the club scene, the audience’s instinct is Traxler is right when he tells Sarah you’re safe and in a public place, no one is going to try anything. He was wrong twice lol “we got 30 cops in this building!”
i think it's universally agreed that the remaster took the punch out of the sounds. the original guns sounded like violent barking animals. the explosions made you think the world was coming to an end. the terminator vision sounded so evil; really added to the atmosphere this thing was a monster. the remaster couldnt replicate the feel of the old sounds
The sound in this is fantastic! Great scene as we're truly introduced to what a terminator actually is and what it's capable of. Cameron does a great job of making you realise how utterly defenceless the police officers are no matter their numbers. Would have been a nice touch if there was some dialogue from the officers making reference to the terminator not going down despite clearly being hit.
Sound is absolutely awesome. This movie is as dark as hell. Dark, gritty and brutal. A truly excellent sci-fi/horror movie. Definitely my favorite. The rest are more mainstream audience orientated, in my opinion.

T2 would have done better to focus on the future war, the events leading up to the first movie, and focusing on how Dyson's creation turned on him. But alas, Cameron wanted to remake his own movie for some unknown reason...

I really dig the shotgun SFX. Not so much the rifle or the revolver sounds, sounds too cartoony IMO but that's really just a product of it's period. I'm definitely not a fan of the overused 80's bullet ricochet sound like at 1:25. I think a combo of this shotgun with the revolver and rifle from the newer audio would be a great combo personally. The screams of the police officers shot definitely should've stayed though. Really brings out the remorseless power this Terminator demonstrates.
I very much like this audio version, better from VHS. The gun shots sound more real from pistols, shotguns & machine guns. The Blu-ray & DVD version, it's not the same as it from this.
I, as a self-proclaimed fanatic of this franchise, having really gone back and examined the first two films, started asking a series of what-ifs outside of the obvious "well if they did that there'd be no movie" retort. But, imagine for a second, what if after the desk officer mentioned "listen, it may take a while, why don't you just have a seat..." that the T-800, literally took a seat and waited for them to bring Sarah out to meet her "friend"? Legit, I think he'd have successfully completed his mission right then and there lol!

The horror of this scene really sets in place how the Terminator cannot be stopped. The brutality, the police completely unaware of what they are facing and the fear and terror that follows.
A nice subtle detail, that shows attention to crafting detail, is how the Terminator is holding heavy weapons in both hands. A normal human couldn't do that because the recoil would make it impossible, but a machine that just _looks_ human could easily do it. This is naturally par for the course with Arnold action movies, but _at least_ Terminator has a valid explanation for it that isn't just "one-man wrecking ball," lol.
this scene is a very frightening scene! The mood is unmached by terminator 2! Watching this is on pair with watching school shooting footage. very disturbing
It is always nice to have the option on what audio to listen to. The monoaural sound should be respected and included with all future releases. For one the closing music cue is too loud in contemporary mixes. In the original it is just as intended and keeps the tension up.

The 2nd machine gun burst, the bullet that bounced off his jacket and the sound of the lights going off are better in the new audio track. The gun sounds in the moments I specifically pointed out just scream "Looney Tunes" but the rest of the sound is great. Dunno why they cut out the sounds of the police personnel groaning in pain after getting shot.
I bought the new blu ray and was disappointed so after some research got the R1 Image DVD for the mono sounds and also have a 1080p blu ray rip synced to the original mono sound, hope they release a blu ray with the original mono sounds.

This was probably the one major flaw of the Terminator character. It’s supposed to be a low key infiltration unit. All it had to do was wait for Sara to be done and kill her as she leaves. Now, if she spots him immediately and yells “that’s him!”, then I could understand the shootout happening. Still an awesome scene.
Wow, I never heard it in such a clear quality. Well, maybe a bit too clear 'cause I can hear that the sound saturation at 2:54 is way too high. I don't know what audio software you used in order to do it, but you maybe you should reduce the level of restoration you've done in order to remove the saturation for all the loud SFX. Also, where did you get the mono track in such a good quality? I have one ripped from the DVD Special Edition but it's muffled as hell. I tried to do a restoration too but there was no purpose due to the poor quality of the source. Is your audio from the Laserdisc?

The Terminator is possibly the greatest "B-movie" ever made. By that i mean, it is the greatest low-budget sci-fi ever produced. The Terminator is a great inspiration for future filmmakers. Cameron showed us what can be possible on a small budget and its freaking amazing. T2 on the other hand is the greatest action movie ever made. Cameron showed us whats possible once youve established yourself in the industry. And its freaking phenomenal. I just wish we could get a new 5.1 remix for The Terminator. The .45 longslide should sound like a freaking cannon. The audience should be just as shocked and stunned by that weapon as Sarah Connors neighbors after the Terminator blew her head off. Theres an interesting deleted scene revealing the aftermath where Sarah Connors neighbors are running around in complete panic mode. But the newest 5.1 remix makes all of these bad**s weapons sound like squeaky toys, including the shotguns. You cant feel anything from a sound effect like that.
They used the spaghetti western ricochet sound in this version. The remastered sound is just a thump of the bullets hitting the outer flesh of the Terminator.
I can see why the audio was remixed. Some of the gunshot sound effects are borderline cartoonish. The kind of thing you'd hear in a Yosemite Sam short. Overall though, this is more brutal. Especially with the wounded cops crying in the background.
Oooooo I just noticed a film edit mistake. The cops face gets lit up by the cars headlights but the headlights on the car aren’t on. I’ve probably watched that scene over 10 times over the last 30 years and never noticed that.
I just noticed that in the stereo version the wrong sound effects are played in this scene. When he fires the shotgun you hear sound effects from the machinegun.

Ah yes...80s shotgun is my favorite. When I purchased the newer DVD I noticed something was different than my VHS copy. Original Mix is better.
The part I love the most is at :48 when he shoves the door open and it crashes loudly. Always LOL'd at that part. the remix cuts that out.

evieraotacon Make sure you got good (not cheap) ear plugs that will protect your eardrums when you are within proximity. Else, you get deaf by the time you hit the late thirties or forties man.

Those gun sounds are the absolute best.
The 2nd machine gun burst, the bullet that bounced off his jacket and the sound of the lights going off are better in the new audio track. The gun sounds in the moments I specifically pointed out just scream "Looney Tunes" but the rest of the sound is great. Dunno why they cut out the sounds of the police personnel groaning in pain after getting shot.
I bought the new blu ray and was disappointed so after some research got the R1 Image DVD for the mono sounds and also have a 1080p blu ray rip synced to the original mono sound, hope they release a blu ray with the original mono sounds.

This was probably the one major flaw of the Terminator character. It’s supposed to be a low key infiltration unit. All it had to do was wait for Sara to be done and kill her as she leaves. Now, if she spots him immediately and yells “that’s him!”, then I could understand the shootout happening. Still an awesome scene.
At 2:03 the noises I used to hear as a kid as "Beans, Pow" and used to say them whenever a bullet missed me as a kid during fake gun battles lol.

Wow, I never heard it in such a clear quality. Well, maybe a bit too clear 'cause I can hear that the sound saturation at 2:54 is way too high. I don't know what audio software you used in order to do it, but you maybe you should reduce the level of restoration you've done in order to remove the saturation for all the loud SFX.
Also, where did you get the mono track in such a good quality? I have one ripped from the DVD Special Edition but it's muffled as hell. I tried to do a restoration too but there was no purpose due to the poor quality of the source. Is your audio from the Laserdisc?
It’s the blu-ray synced with laserdisc audio. The uploader just used a torrent which is in circulation. He didn’t do shit.

@@thepassionofthegoose5472 if that comment was aimed at me then no not really because the uploader put in the videos title and description that this is the MGM mono. None of the Terminator LD’s are by MGM, only DVD and BD.
I love the original mono track with the synth solo at 4:04 without the drum beat.
I prefer this audio more. They did a piss poor job with the gun shot sounds in the new audio.

Glaring mistake in this scene. He looks up because of the headlights. Yet when the car crashes through the glass the headlights are off.

What about Jaws? The sound changes in that movie were pretty bad. Whenever I watch my Blu-Ray of it, I always set it to mono.

The Terminator is possibly the greatest "B-movie" ever made. By that i mean, it is the greatest low-budget sci-fi ever produced. The Terminator is a great inspiration for future filmmakers. Cameron showed us what can be possible on a small budget and its freaking amazing.
T2 on the other hand is the greatest action movie ever made. Cameron showed us whats possible once youve established yourself in the industry. And its freaking phenomenal.
I just wish we could get a new 5.1 remix for The Terminator. The .45 longslide should sound like a freaking cannon. The audience should be just as shocked and stunned by that weapon as Sarah Connors neighbors after the Terminator blew her head off. Theres an interesting deleted scene revealing the aftermath where Sarah Connors neighbors are running around in complete panic mode. But the newest 5.1 remix makes all of these bad**s weapons sound like squeaky toys, including the shotguns. You cant feel anything from a sound effect like that.
They used the spaghetti western ricochet sound in this version. The remastered sound is just a thump of the bullets hitting the outer flesh of the Terminator.

I can see why the audio was remixed. Some of the gunshot sound effects are borderline cartoonish. The kind of thing you'd hear in a Yosemite Sam short.
Overall though, this is more brutal. Especially with the wounded cops crying in the background.

Oooooo I just noticed a film edit mistake. The cops face gets lit up by the cars headlights but the headlights on the car aren’t on.
I’ve probably watched that scene over 10 times over the last 30 years and never noticed that.
I just noticed that in the stereo version the wrong sound effects are played in this scene. When he fires the shotgun you hear sound effects from the machinegun.
Such a badass scene.

I think it's cute how the Lieutenant thought thirty cops could stand up to the Terminator.
The sergeants desk lights up as the vehicle drives towards it, but the headlights are not on.
