    Hey studios, here’s an idea: release this movie (and in fact all older movies) on 4K Bly ray with multiple audio options. The original mono / stereo tracks for purists (albeit cleaned up), your 5.1 remix done for DVD & Blu Ray, and then a newly created Dolby Atmos track. This will make everyone happy, and make the upgrade even more worthwhile.

  • @1983jblack
    @1983jblack 4 роки тому +53

    Here's my two cents on the two soundtracks - I like the music in 5.1, SFX in mono with the exception of the garage chase. I like the two distinct shotgun sounds between the Terminator and Reese. You can hear the glass shattering and buckshot hitting the car which is nice. I prefer the mono shotgun in all other parts of the movie as well as all other mono gunfire. The mono music track is so evenly loud you miss little parts of the track. I like the 5.1 gunfire impact when it hits the Terminator. Everyone has their own preference, I just want parts of both implemented into one. Neither sound is a buzzkill to the movie - it would be good even if one was deaf.

    • @palachdredd5830
      @palachdredd5830 2 роки тому +3

      It is not right. When bullets hit the Terminator's endoskeleton, the sound of impact against metal is dampened by overcoming the thick leather jacket and flesh. These sounds overlaid in 5.1 refer to the cheap, ill-conceived effects of modern cinema, which used to suffer less.

    • @AnalogWolf
      @AnalogWolf Рік тому +6

      The simple thing is at the very least the original sound mix should always be included in a home release, it's as much a part of the movie as the picture. Then you can do whatever you want with remixed audio. If you're not going to do that, the remix should use the original stems and not change everything.

    It's understandable that everyone likes the original mono track the best cause there is a hate against tinkering with old movies, which I mostly agree with. However, it seems people hated the mono track in the laserdisc days cause it lacked bass and no surround activity. Cameron himself actually said he wanted to upgrade the sound, but the studio didn't give him the budget for it, so he used the budget on other things he found more important. Later when the movie was a hit, he upgraded it for home releases, but then people wanted the mono track back.. I'm indifferent towards this but they really should give you the choice and include both on bluray releases.

It was too noticeable, the .45 longslide sound effect, the shotgun blasts during the garage chase & especially the pipe bomb explosions echoing in the tunnel chase were all replaced with weaker sound effects. I can also complain about the missing electric violin's music cue, which builds up the imminent tanker explosion, that was also taken out. They don’t even use the right laser sound effects in the 5.1 mix during one of Kyle’s flashback, so much for Jim wanting to make the mix closer to Terminator 2. And yes this is using sound effects from the sequel which makes it all the more frustrating with everybody wanting the original CDS and Dolby Stereo mixes for T2 not knowing it’s the same design from 1991 (personally they still should release the original CDS mix on BluRay, they did it once on DVD in 1997.) yet knowing this film wasn’t in stereo but in mono kind of ticks me off, to me remixes should mostly reflect the mono mix but in stereo (or in this case 5.1) and have the original mono to go along with it as an option.

    I always appreciated, that in the future battle-scenes the lasers / rays are not like in starwars flying visible along like tracer-bullets, but are instentanious complete rays from gun to target, as light is. The banging sound going with the flashes in the mono-soundtrack fits this perfectly, as this is what it would sound like, because the ionized and heated air would collapse after the ray burst, like a little flash with thunder. Powerful short laser-bursts would (if at all) sound like "tack-tack" (*sizzle*) and not "pyiu-pyiu" like it was more in the 5.1 soundtrack.

    I think the biggest factor is the sound system. With the old school tv's mono seems to be better because it gives you that deep bass effect, but with the new digital tech your system has to be on point and professionally tweaked, so you're not stuck with that irritating pins and needles effect. I thought I was going insane back when I rewatched The Terminator after having originally as a kid watched the VHS version, and I could SWEAR especially the ballpointer pistol sounded different - it was to the point of me thinking if it was some mandela-effect.
    It was especially glaring as well with Sarah's dream of the future with the Colombo-terminator's big plasma-gun thingy just sounding like it was shooting bullets rather than 'PURPLE LASERS'... or at least it had more 'oomph' sound to it rather that hella-flat 'plak plak plak' noise in the remix.

He pushes the door open, steps over the threshold as she fall back, extends his arm fully, then suddenly he's standing in the door frame elbow bent and Sarah is just standing there waiting. Obviously they had multiple takes and had some reason to piece it together, it just looks weird.

The sounds were originally better, especially when it comes to the magnum. Well it's not how it sounded originally, so if the sound continues to be the remix, then it's not the theatrical version. I much prefer the mono version. But the Terminators 45 longslide does sound kinda cool in the 5.1 version. Apparently Arnold had to reach into his pocket to flip a switch to active the laser on that 45. The laser was connected to a cable that went to a power source and then ran to a switch box in Arnies pocket. Seems like laser sights weren't the norm back in 84.

      It does sound cool and it was the first version of the film I watched, so I’m quite familiar with it, but having seen the film in the original mono mix, I really _hate_ that they changed it.
      Even though a lot of people associate that stock sound effect with Harry Callahan’s .44 Magnum, that’s not a bad thing, it makes the .45 longslide sound absolutely beastly and it gives the 2 “Sarah Connor” murders by Arnold before the Tech Noir shootout an intense brutality. The new effects by comparison make the scenes feel more… precision-like… if that makes sense. Given that Arnold’s T-800 is highly efficient and precise but ultimately more of a brute force hunter than a precision killer, I feel the original sound effects are far superior and fit the scene and character better. It’s the small details that make the difference.

      Oh it’s an issue in all the versions unfortunately. Doesn’t kill the scene though, a small sound editing error. Guys idk wtf you all are smoking, the 5.1 sounds a lot better. If you want the sounds to be more powerful, turn up the volume! It's a well mixed and balanced track with little distortion and compression, which you do not want. The shotgun sounds better, the 45 slide sounds unique while the original sounds like an average mediocre-sounding stock pistol sound effect. The one benefit the mono has is that the machine guns the cops use sound better, but the T-800s machine gun? Forget about it, that gun sounds brutal. THAT BEING SAID, the mono should be more widely available on new releases for The Terminator, and I hope they do so when they make a new 4K transfer.

      @crissrudd4554 3 місяці тому

      Respect your opinion but I also respectfully disagree. The new mix makes it sound too contemporary and loses that low budget feel. The pipe bombs in the tunnel no longer echo, the scraping during the main title music is gone, .45 handgun sounds like it has a silencer, Reese’s shot is going ‘poof’ instead of “BLAM”. I digress. Everyone is allowed to like whatever mix they want but that being said present physical releases outside DVD only offer the remix when it should have both. Hopefully this supposed 4K release that’s coming out will rectify this.

Anyone who's ever watched footage of a 9mm or .45 going of knows that the sound effect doesn't go BOOOOOOOOOOM!!! as they do in the mono. It's a sharp, short pang followed by a comparably loud echo. Here btw is the sound of of a 1911 being fired indoors. ua-cam.com/video/QA2gaCL3Z28/v-deo.html
