    To the system runs great as it is. The only thing that I would possibly do is change the stock thermal paste but other than that I feel as though the fan mod isn't necessary. Good video though dude I enjoyed watching.

    Replacing the stock thermal paste with something as basic as Arctic MX4 makes a huge differenceto the fan noise, no need for the other mods. Also, this will have zero impact on FPS, ZERO.

    Interesting mod. Nice job!
    I would definitely consider using liquid metal TIM as further possible improvement.
    However I would recommend to check the ripple on that tapped supply lane and put some puffer capacitor into the circuit if needed as a massive fan is clearly able to mess up the stability.
    It's interesting Microsoft learnt nothing from the 90's PCs as you don't want to blow the CPU's hot air trough the PSU.
    62°C air temperature? That can mean 80+ core temps quite easily.

      So you just made me think and ask you a question you seem very knowledgeable. Is it possible that constantly running it through the hard drive power supply could possibly have a power related issue later because it's not plugged into its correct location that is meant to not cause an explosion or a fire I'm not really sure what the consequence would be. But I would like to do it the right way.

    • @eduardoavila646

      Actually the liquid metal tends to corrode the parts, and mainly the heatsink that isnt full copper... Its a really bad idea actually...
      Also it isnt bad to blow the cpu air into the psu, many itx and small cases still do that nowdays!
      His unit is deffective, my cousin has one xone and its very quiet and cold and he plays the shit out of it, my x360 in the other hand....

    You actually want the air coming out of the console to be as hot, that means that the heatsink is drawing more heat from chip and being efficient.

    • @nosubstancehere2884
      @nosubstancehere2884 6 років тому +3

      eVo7 Not really true, if you don’t push air over the heat sink, it gets hotter from the chip. If you push more air over it, the chip and heat sink cool down, leading to cooler air and cooler chip.

      Dude no. If you suspect even the smallest problems it's only under warranty for a year so definetly report all problems possible and send it in to Microsoft if at all possible. A warranty almost always times it's self to be pointless one year warranty means the console will most likely last around 2 years so I'd send mine in and attempt to get a new one back if at all possible for any reason they will accept as this is a supreme console and if it's over heating at all call Microsoft and see what they can do for you.
      They almost definetly will work with you and almost guaranteed the one they send you will be better then the one you had if you have any issues with it at all. Mine runs a bit hot but my friends is cold like ice leading me to believe his is working properly and mine isn't I also got mine from a somewhat questionable best buy and I'm unsure if it was used or tested prior to me buying it ANY scepticism and go for it use that warranty they sold a premium product they better insure you get a premium experience.

    If I get an Xbox One X, I think ill wait a few months. Microsoft may make improvements or tweaks. They must of used very cheap thermal paste for it to dry up like that. I have seen 8 year old PC's and the thermal paste is still good. I hope thermal paste is improved soon!

    • @NVelme

    • @fordgtguy
      @fordgtguy 6 років тому

      This isn't true at all; you're conveniently ignoring the fact that the heat exiting from the back of the console is the combination of the APU, PSU, HDD, RAM and any other heat source inside the console. All you did was permanently put the fan on full blast.

  • @TheDude50447

    Nice. I was sort of hoping for liquid metal and that youll put in an ssd. But still nice.

  • @DEMENTO01
    @DEMENTO01 6 років тому +3

    For all people telling that this doesn't mean more fps, just look, 30 min idle at a game before 60+ ºC and now 35ºc lol, and that's in the exterior of the unit, the apu should have like 10-15 ºc more, thermal throttling happens a lot when consoles are not cool enough, and the fan mod, look, the fan that the xbox one x has is a very good fan, for working at a little more speed doesn't mean that will fail, I'm pretty sure that that exact same fan is also on computer's fans and works faster.
    The only thing I'll recommend you, is to use graphite pads instead of thermal paste (this doesn't expire and has a very good heat dissipation) or liquid metal (this could expire but the heat dissipation is THE BEST) before you ask, I have liquid metal on my pc, between IHS and heatsink, and it doesn't do anything bad to them, just careful with aluminum heatsinks if you put liquid metal will break them, but Xbox one x's is copper so.

    • @NVelme
      @NVelme  6 років тому +26

      Pepsi Maniac Gaming when apu gets too hot like on original cooling it drops frames, has less frames. Cooling mod eliminates frame drop

    • @pepsimaniacgaming2617
      @pepsimaniacgaming2617 6 років тому +1

      NVelme Sort of like the Athlon XP lineup? I've seen them behave the way you are describing APUs.

    • @Dennn90
      @Dennn90 6 років тому +11

      Every modern (and not so much) CPU or GPU will throttle (drop it's clock) pass certain temperature threshold, usually it's between 70-90C as measured in the core itself, so if we have 62C on the radiator or even airflow, APU itself can exceed 90 and it'll throttle like crazy to keep the temp less than critical (about 100-110C depends from a chip) and if it still exceeds critical, it just shuts off. So yes, proper cooling can gain some FPS, by preventing throttling.

    • @HobkinBoi
      @HobkinBoi 6 років тому +4

      It does. But not only that, it extends the life of the APU, by reducing thermal strain on it.

    • @Dennn90
      @Dennn90 6 років тому

      {MLP} Rainbow Dash yes, that's correct. Less heat, is always better anyway, unless you need a room heater, not a console.

  • @Max_Helbing
    @Max_Helbing 6 років тому +12

    Why should there be a 30°C improvement on the exhaust? That would mean the heat sink isn't touching the apu properly... Otherwise the temperature would be the same because the apu should be producing the same amount of heat no matter what. The improved would only be measurable on the apu itself.

    • @NVelme
      @NVelme  6 років тому +1

      that's not right... heatsink gets hot because of apu getting hot, which means... if you cool down heatsink, apu gets cooler as well.

    • @Max_Helbing
      @Max_Helbing 6 років тому +1

      So where is the heat going then?

    • @NVelme
      @NVelme  6 років тому +1

      ventilated outside console through back and fresh cooler air drawn in through side vent holes

    • @heavnbound
      @heavnbound 6 років тому +5

      You're right unless the fan speed is increased, thereby reducing the temperature of the exhaust through higher air volume. Overall the heat generated by the Xbox is the same. Now this heat is transferred more quickly into the surrounding environment.

    • @fordgtguy
      @fordgtguy 6 років тому +2

      The temperature difference is because he basically made it so the fan never turns off while the console is running. The Xbox One X is designed to run in the original temperatures shown; therefore it didn't need to overrun the fan like this mod does. While the new thermal paste helped; it was not what caused this temperature drop. The heat coming out of the console isn't what matters; it's the console's ability to maintain temperature within tolerance inside the console.
      The key term here is "within tolerance", Microsoft weren't just idiots that couldn't figure out how to leave a fan on like the modder did. They purposely designed the fan to only speed up when it was needed to maintain tolerance.
      The "dry thermal paste" is extremely normal for mass produced electronics. You're never going to buy a mass produced electronic with arctic silver thermal paste installed by hand.

    the only good thing you did was replace the thermal paste, again raising fan speed will only kill the fan faster and lessen your consoles life. there have been multiple discusions on your videos about how dumb raising fan speed is. another thing: why do you keep claiming "more fps" on your "modding" videos? consoles are NOT pc's, consoles are computers but they are locked down to run at a specific speeds and that will not change by increasing airflow or chainging thermal compound, claiming more fps is lying to your viewers and you will get ALOT of backlash from techies if you keep putting false claims on your video titles. its nice to have a good tear down and to show how to replace thermal paste, showing how to increase fan speed is pretty creative and i respect your risk taking but dont go and claim that it makes such a huge impact when the result is very minimal, the only thing that will have an impact is the thermal paste but even then not enough to "increase performance", all it will do is lower temps

    • @NVelme
      @NVelme  6 років тому +11

      faster fan speed does not do any bad to console, instead it cools it down properly. trust me these fans do not die. i have some ps3 still running on stock fans with speed mod.

    • @socialfreak6900
      @socialfreak6900 6 років тому +13

      everything will die at some point or another, fans are no exception, sure your ps3 fans may still be good but theres no telling when they will give out, for all you know one day you could mod a fan and it will die within a week, as i said before increasing fan speed is not a good idea. your videos are great with the teardowns and thermal compound replacement but the fan mod is extremely unnecessary, its cool and creative but unnecessary, claiming better fps is also unnecessary because you cant go beyond locked fps on a console
      EDIT: sorry i didnt see at the end of your video where you said more stable fps, its not more fps but in your video title you should clarify stability not more

      The PWM runs on 5V although I think this is maybe reverse PWM... Because I seem to remember unplugging a PWM signal results in 100% fan speed. I can't remember right now. Haven't built a PWM controller for a computer fan in 5+ years but one works on way and one works the other (server vs consumer). Server is called reverse PWM and I think that's what this fan is. Although you'd think a server would go 100% if a circuit failed.
      Anyways im sure at least that it's 5V and that fan is running 100% at 5V.

    I would be worried that cooler air out the back means that the heat sink isn’t working as efficiently - pretty sure you want nice hot air coming out the back. I guess now you’ve done the fan mod you’ll never know whether it’s overheating or not as you won’t hear the fans ramping up.

    • @NVelme
      @NVelme  6 років тому +1

      it is simple, once a year open, clean it, and apply new thermal compound. if you are able to open console safely and even doing a mod successfully, it will be more than easy to do it once in a year

      NVelme would just feel uncomfortable using it without any way of telling how hot it’s running. Lots of things other than dried up thermal paste could cause it to run hotter without you knowing about it. I used to use the “fan accelerator” mods which increase fan speeds by 50% - then you still know it’s getting hot if the fans ramp up more than they should

    what would be the harm in using a hole saw and cutting a hole in he bottom of the xbox where the squirrel cage fan intake is (that you can see @ 1:33 and 1:36 in this video) to get direct access to outside air for cooling the heatsink? I would elevate the console about 1 inch higher after this to help prevent lots of dust getting in there.

      I ran a Xbox 360 without the optical drive connected for about 3 minutes to confirm boot times and game loading times as my console was taking ages to do either (I suspected optical drive fault, cleaning the lense fixed it) and so after loading it up, going online and making sure everything that wasn't the optical drive was fine, I stripped and cleaned the optical before putting it all back together and it still works perfectly, and without an XBL ban on it today.
      However, apparently others have been banned for just that! So maybe I was just lucky...
      The short of it all is that it might work, but it's probably not worth the risk

    I have to ask, what is the point of hooking the fan up to the HDD power plug supposed to be? You disconnect the PWM pin, so the fan runs at 100% all the time - in other words you're trading off noise for thermals. That's your prerogative, but please be open about it in the video - there are plenty of DBA meter and audio spectrum analyzer apps out there if you don't have a SPL meter. But even with this, disconnecting the PWM pin (and repasting) seems to do all of the job. Why hook the fan up to the HDD power? Are you thinking that it'll allow it to draw more power, or some such? Because that's just plain illogical - the fan connector is obviously rated for the draw of the fan at 100% speed, and the fan won't exceed that unless you modify its motor. This really warrants an explanation, preferably before the video causes some idiot to short out their $500 console.

    • @NVelme

    Wouldn’t you want a hotter discharge meaning more heat is being dissipated?

    • @YouNameItGaming
      @YouNameItGaming 5 років тому

      It all depends on the fan speeds.
      If the thermal interface gets heat into the heatsink easier, the fan speeds will usually drop resulting in more energy in the heatsink, and greater saturation of the now slower moving air as such making the exhaust hotter.
      However, let's say the new thermal compound works 25% more efficiently than the old crap, but the fan speed is raised by 50%, your exhaust charge temp will have a much lower delta.
      There's always situation C where the the heat is moved away from the CPU so efficiently that it hardly gets the chance to exceed ambient very much, and as such the airflow will also feel relatively cool, but I think that's more to do with cooler design than anything else

      if not sure you should ask someone who repairs consoles on daily basis, they could tell you that it is not right, but who cares if you pay them to do what you want

    If I were going to waste my time on something like this, which I wouldn't. I would have left the fan as it was. cleaned the copper plate completely and used new thermal pads. MX 4 would be my choice for thermal compound it will last at least for 8 years.

    • @NVelme
      @NVelme  6 років тому

      on consoles it would be about 2-3 years with mx4 if you play daily

    Wonder if you can help with a question. Is the fan pin out order on the Xbox one X same as Xbox one S? I ask as I bought a fan accelerator from Circuit Surgery. If works fine one the Xbox one S, you can adjust fan speed in 10% increments but when fitting to the Xbox one X the fan spins at 100% and adjusting does nothing. The guy that sells them seems to think the pin outs are the same and has no idea way it doesn’t work. I don’t think he’s tested an X and not sold as working on an X. But if the fan config is different I can just swap wires accordingly. Any ideas would be welcome, I can’t find Xbox one s fan wiring anywhere on web.

      Wrath of Bill pinout is the same, but fans are different. Xbox one x fan uses more amps and will work on higher resistance then xbox one s.

      NVelme would that cause it to only operate at 100% ?

    • @NVelme
      @NVelme  6 років тому +1

      yes, if resistance too low. it needs higher resistance. i believe you could modify your fan accelerator. it may be uses potentiometer in it. if you measure it with multimeter, you could find out how much of resistance you need

    Those thermal pads are think af.
    Also from my understanding you are just hot wiring the blower motor to spin at max rpm 24/7 (not all the way thru with the video yet)

      Unedited Gamer nop... it spuns at full speed on 12v. This one is on 5v which is about 45 % of max speed

  • @nikon57727

    so he made it run on 5v speed all the time, it there a way to increase it? like not full speed at 12 v but a bit higher like 7-8v?

    • @franciscotoro1937

      With a 7909 regulator. You can get 9v from 12 volts. And fan will run at 75% of his max speed

    Great It’s work, Dec 2019 I try this mod. But if you let hdd turn on while xbox turn off. The fan still on 😁 thanks man @NVelme
    My question why dont use 12v fan full load?
