It's good to note that if you're in the market for a Puma auto, the lower depreciation of the ST Auto will cost you less per month on a PCP deal (after all, your premium is based on sale price minus residual value in x months / x months). The ST Auto gives you the lane keep assist and adaptive cruise control functionality that the ST manual does not so motorway drivers will benefit massively from the ST Auto.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and it is a very good point. Auto's do hold their money better and there are certainly upsides in the long term ownership along with day to day driving in built up areas over the 1.5 Manual 👍
Run a quote off on Ford UK site & you'll see the Puma auto will cost you MORE per month on a PCP deal than a Puma ST Auto! Whilst the ST Auto is more expensive, the value of the depreciation is significantly lower.
The whole point of having the ST is for the performance and noise . I can't believe they have dropped the bhp and the engine size . Maybe they could have made a 1.3 Ecoboost with the same 200 bhp . I have the fiesta st and it's a cracking drive for what it is and puts a smile on my face when on a good back road . I can't see the new puma st will have the same effect which is a Big Big downfall.
I’ve had my Puma ST 1.5 for a year and love driving it in Sport mode on the country roads where I live. I find the 200bhp a good balance for the Puma ST. I like your review and I’m interested to drive the new hybrid ST 170bhp especially with the auto transmission and paddles 👍
Do you think the Ecoboost engines are reliable? Surely you have seen what's happening to them? They are known in the trade as ECO-BOOMS for a reason. That said the 1.5 appears to be more reliable than the 1.0L, but that's not difficult. Even the 2.3 IN the RS Focus and Mustang is a massive fail. So why would you buy one?
Have a Fiesta ST-3 1.5 but chopping it in for one of these, just awaiting delivery date. Love the Fiesta but I’m 61 years old and the novelty of a manual 6 speed gearbox has worn off, looking forward to the automatic to drive me (albeit a bit slower) towards my retirement. 😇 Thanks for the review, love your content.
Many congrats on your order! For day to day the auto will be better for sure and I found with the puma the ride was a lot more settled than the Fiesta ST so overall I can recommend it particularly for normal road use. Thank you for the positive feedback 👍
I have done a bit of research and test drives on all the puma models, I have now purchased the hybrid auto and picking it up on Friday, thanks for the review, this helped me make my mind up. I also took a spin the the golf Rline mk8, I thought the puma was better.
Had 1.5L model. Traded it in for the 1.0L model and been driving it for 2 months now. I will share my experience. Reasons I made the trade: -Couldn't make full use of 200 HP due to traffic and speed cameras - I meet traffic all the time. -Wanted more MPG figure - I was getting 35 MPG on the 1.5L model and had to get it refuelled every other week. The 1.0L model is giving 40+ MPG and has lasted me for around a month without refuelling. -It's automatic - seems to be faster off-the-line and feels more comfortable to drive daily but the 1.5L model felt more powerful overall, of course. -Has adaptive cruise control via driver assistance pack. Hope this helps those looking to change their 1.5L model.
Thank you for sharing your experience! Those are really great points and I agree on the responsiveness of the 1.0 off the line....I believe it is to do with the Hybrid element that gives it that kick. How do you find the sound of 1.0 compared to your old 1.5?
Yes, the hybrid boost definitely makes the acceleration faster and smoother. It's a nice feeling when it kicks in as you accelerate. As for the sound, I found the inside of the 1.0L model to be a bit quieter too in comparison. Outside, it was pretty hard to tell the difference. Overall, the car does seems to be a bit quieter but need more mileage to be sure. Btw, thank you for the heart!😁
Odd its got a manual handbrake mated to an autobox, I for see some strain on that box as people forget to remove the hand brake whilst in drive. I assume the 1.0 has been uprated internals as the extra BHP would possibly need it, although the autobox will offer it some protection. Best review I have seen so far on this one, so well done! But I agree, a 1.5 auto and they would have been onto a winner.
I suppose the new mhev-ready A7 is not compatible with the 1.5 ecoboost. And the gearbox compatible with the 1.5, the A8 (or cut down A7 you get in the Focust ST 2.3) just isn't very sporty, it's good for everyday driving but it's not suited for a small sporty car.
Just ordered mine in Agate black. I loved this review! The part where you say… it’s nice… it’s NICE. That is exactly how the car made me feel. Ok so tamed down compared to the manual, but a real fun car to drive… can’t wait 🙏🏼
In Portugal the catalogue for the MY2024 shows 160hp… but I guess it’s an error !? I have a 155 ST-Line which is a lot fun to drive , except that I think Ford dropped the paddles because otherwise the ST would become kind of an RS Line rather than an ST… Curious to understand where Ford have found a 7.4 second vs an 8.7 with only 15hp while they just managed to do 8.7 vs 9.6 between the 155 and 125hp versions (which is a difference of 30hp!!)… it’s kind of a mystery to me 😂
great review Sam! I picked my Puma ST 170 auto up last week and I love it!! Had a manual Vignale and decided it was time to move to an auto and saw this ! It really does put a smile on your face when driving. So glad I went for the Azura blue as it looks amazing.
@@da_great_mogul yes, I had 155 bhp in the old one. The ST bhp although only a few horses extra, definitely feels quicker. Maybe it’s having the auto box that just makes it feel like that, but I definitely a difference. It’s my first auto after 30 plus years of driving a manual 😉
We have just traded our Puma 1.5 ST in for one of these. Never had an automatic before however I'm really impressed. The 1L engine has been redeveloped especially for the ST along with the gearbox. Had the drivers assist pack again, however the automatic has more features and I'm loving the new seats 😁
@da_great_mogul yes it has adaptive cruise control and lane assist. I think the power is still there obviously not as quick as the 1.5 but still very impressive 👏
@@sarahmyatt5333 That's amazing to know as according to Ford UK's specs, both ST and ST Powershift do not come with the ACC and lane keep assist, even when oping for it as part of the technology pack.
Those beeps an bings an bongs would drive me nuts, can you disable them temporarily like each time start car up or can you permanently turn them off 🤔🏴
I feel the same way. Its been quite common in Fords for a while to make these noises but I know there is legislation coming in place which forces manufacturers to have more bings and bongs (such as when you go over the speed limit). I believe you "can" at the moment turn these off but as for the standard fit Ford ones, which seem to make a lot of noise quite often, I hope there is a setting somewhere to reduce the noise or turn it off but I am unsure on this 🤔
I would have the Puma ST 1.5 Ecoboost 200PS. I like the pleasure of driving a manual. However, if you’re using a vehicle as a daily and you don’t want the hassle of changing the gears, and you want better gas mileage, the ST Powershift would be ideal for them.
Great video! How good is the adaptive cruise control and lane keep? Does the ACC have the traffic assist function and will work down to 0 mph? And does the lane keeping center you or just bounce around in the lane?
Thank you for the positive feedback! Yes all the features worked as good as can be expected from my experience with the car. I am not a fan of them personally as I prefer to be in full control of the car but it's good to have them on the car 👍
The noise is faked at least on the ST170 you get the symposer so the world gets to hear the roar, rather than the the enhancer on the ST line where the sound is pumped out into the speakers in the boot.
Great video!! Been waiting for a video like this for a while now to actually get a feel for how it drives etc. I've been waiting for mine since June. Trading in my ST-LineX 155 mainly interested in the auto engine as my current car is already quite nippy tbh.
@SamAustin for sure it can only be an improvement. I've actually ordered it in the same colour too 🤣 sadly its delay build date is end of November so still a while yet but I'm super excited
Thanks Sam, I've been looking @these for the past week for my partner. They're abit pricey (Being brand spanking new), so I'll hold out for a bit. Great review, keep up the good work.✊🏿
I''ve just ordered a Focus MK4.5 ST Auto with a Track Pack add-on. I know this isn't a video regarding the Focus, but I was wondering since you've drove a manual ST Focus, would you say this auto Puma ST would be similar in terms of using the auto gear box? I ask because this will be my first automatic car and I am intrigued to see how using the paddles will be. Great channel by the way. Keep up the great work! 👏🏼
This is actually exactly what I was thinking about during the drive with the Focus ST in an Auto so thank you for your comment! I don't know if this will be the exact same automatic as the 2.3 is a fair bit different to a 1.0 Hybrid but I can imagine there will be similarities. I had no complaints and I quite liked it in auto mode as I feel the car knows best. In manual mode it was more just to get a bit more engagement and I liked how I got a bit of a kick in the back on up shifts as it it made the drive more enjoyable for me. I'd love to try the track pack in auto as I have drive plenty with the manual as that would be a great car to share. Many congrats on your order and you will have to keep us updated on how you find it 👍
High Sam, I was thinking of getting one of these but my main issue was just how firm the suspension was as the regular Puma borders on the firm side. How did you find it as I have not been for a test drive yet?👍
I found it comfortable for me but I am used to driving firmer cars from time to time so that is my tolerance. I believe you can get adjustable suspension as part of the performance pack which might help with the ride. I would definately recommend test driving one but actually sometimes the ST versions more sophisticated and expensive suspension can be more compliant than the basic entry level in terms of less roll etc. 100% worth a test drive as thats the best way as the car was great 👍
Hi Sam, nice one. Are the seats in these the same as the facelift Focus/Fiesta ST's you've experienced? If so, are these seats better or worse than the pre facelift versions with the recaros? Thanks again!
Thank you! Yes they are the same seats as in the facelift focus and fiesta STs. The Focus ones feel a bit bigger though and more comfy but they look exactly the same. I am a big fan of them and they are built in house by Ford performance rather than via Recaro who also make great seats 👍
Why does it keep bleeping all the time That would absolutely drive me mental . Were just about to order one of these but I’m having a think now ! Hmmm decisions decisions
I did not notice it but I heard quite a few beeps and saw the green battery symbol appear on the dash which I assume is the regen. From my experience with the car for the time I had it I found it did not upset the driving experience. If I had the car for a bit longer I would be able to give you a more comprehensive overview so I will ask Ford to see if they would consider lending me one for longer. Fingers crossed 🤞 On other news I am set to try a subscribers 1.5 Puma ST this weekend to share on the channel so will be able to give you a good comparison between the two I feel 👍
Nonsense. In the past engines had 2 liters or more CC (like Mercedes etc.). Now a days they have just 1.3 engine’s and have more HP. Even Audi’s have 1.0 liter engines and they are also good. Think modern and that is with small engines !
Just got mine from a st line x to 1.0 st and so far loving it kept the blue roof instead of black which i prefer, and also got the auto tailgate which is is a must in my opinion.
very happy with the extra performance still getting used to the powershift but think ford have pulled a blinder giving us the option and insurance just the same as my st line x i had so happy days so far@@SamAustin
It's a tough choice and worth trying out both. I liked the 1.5 in the Fiesta ST and this 1.0 is definately slower but still fast enough and responsive for most people I would say 👍
This car makes sense to me, especially for younger petrol heads. It’ll be interesting to see if Mountune do any maps for this. Also, I hope they’ve not put the bog standard 1 litre ecoboost engine in it, they have known reliability issues, esp do to the wet belt. I know my ST has a timing chain so I would like to think this more premium ST 1.0 has a chain and updated rods and pistons too.
The wet belt issue is mostly down to People not servicing it, as per manufactures recommendation. . If it had full Ford service history and it snapped you’d have a good case I’d imagine.
Yep, in fact no Ford Puma has a wet belt, the cam is chain driven. All the comments here about ecoboom engines are confusing the Puma engine with the previous gen non hybrid engines in the Fiesta or ecosport etc
The bings every time the car thinks you are speeding would drive me crackers I think. Probably the EU's doing. Wish Ford would make UK spec cars with the ability to turn them off (and stay off!)
Yes I believe this is something now for all manufacturers to abide by and it looks as though the rules may well be getting tighter now going forward. I think the only way to have a fast fun ford without the noise is to buy a used example it seems 🤔
@@SamAustin I agree. Will be sticking with cars from the last 2 decades I think. I'm not an Brexiteer or anything, but this stuff is too annoying for me. I've heard some lane-keep systems are verging on dangerous - pulling people into potholes, standing water, or even onto the verge. On a wet day like today I need to cross the centre line all the time to go around big puddles.
It doesn't matter though does it? Buyers of these cars are only buying new cars and that comes with a 3 year warranty. On a 24-36 month PCP, the whole tenure of ownership is covered.
@@da_great_mogulthe ownership is covered for a single owner… but what about all the others afterwards? We can’t just have cars that last 3 years and then go to shite

Ecoboost fail commonly often before they get to 65,000miles. All Ecoboost variants have weaknesses built into them. Avoid at all Costs and get the TDCi engine cars.
Most won't care. They'll buy this new and keep it for the full duration (or even two-thirds) of the warranty offered by the manufacturer. Think only about cost of ownership (hence the apr interest rate on pcp or hp and the loss of value throughout ownership). If you do, you can't go far wrong with a 26 month 0% apr pcp deal on an ST that loses very little value.
Puma, Focus, Fiesta and Mondeo are all dogs let down with crap transmissions - ford hasn't made a decent car for 30 years, just have a look at the new Mustang - what a joke of a design - seriously - they are all crap vehicles.
Headlights were first to go wrong, then a few electrical gremlins... then engine malfunction... good luck... the dealers lie, the manufacturer can't do anything... I swear they're programmed to go wrong, so much happened after warranty. I'd never have a Ford again, even with the priv discount. Their engines and transmissions are woeful. But if you want one, get one. This was just my latest experience. Also have a mk3 Kuga now, fingers crossed. I use motorbikes to avoid using the Focus ST 2.3 ecoBOOM.

Someone clearly knows nothing about the 1 litre EcoBoost engine
@@karlclark9794they’re known as ecoboom engines for a reason 😂
Nonsense. In the past engines had 2 liters or more CC (like Mercedes etc.). Now a days they have just 1.3 engine’s and have more HP. Even Audi’s have 1.0 liter engines and they are also good. Think modern and that is with small engines !
@@scooby0000 is that why my next car will be 2.5 l as it’s an SUV?
When has a st been a 1.0
8.5 fiesta would eat that lol
Does anyone have a Quaife?
Eco boost I feel your impending pain , the warranty will soften the blow
Just got mine from a st line x to 1.0 st and so far loving it kept the blue roof instead of black which i prefer, and also got the auto tailgate which is is a must in my opinion.
Many congrats on collecting your 1.0 Puma ST! Interested to know how you find it coming from the 1.0 ST-Line X 🎉
very happy with the extra performance still getting used to the powershift but think ford have pulled a blinder giving us the option and insurance just the same as my st line x i had so happy days so far@@SamAustin
Is this the DESERT ISLAND blue?
The colour of this one is in Azura Blue and it looked stunning in person. I believe the Desert Island blue is slightly darker 👍
I have the 1.5 ST I am undecided on the 1.0 auto.
It's a tough choice and worth trying out both. I liked the 1.5 in the Fiesta ST and this 1.0 is definately slower but still fast enough and responsive for most people I would say 👍
Don’t do it. I went from a puma st line x to a full fat st puma. Never going back.
first
This car makes sense to me, especially for younger petrol heads.
They haven’t had the wet belt since 2020
Yep, in fact no Ford Puma has a wet belt, the cam is chain driven.
1.0ltr ecoboom are a ticking time bomb. Worst ever engine Fords have produced
@tarquin2trappybro this isn't a used car review. I cancelled my order for my Mum for fears of reliability as she'd have kept it for years.
Nice car for the younger generation. It's not ideal for a grown ass man to drive in my opinion
Had a puma for 2 years had major problems steering rack loosened up and nearly made me crash had countless problems with the battery never will buy a Ford again
Ecoboost fail commonly often before they get to 65,000miles. All Ecoboost variants have weaknesses built into them.
Avoid at all Costs and get the TDCi engine cars.
That’s a sweeping statement to make - post up your statistics to back that up for reference…
Years ago I'd have disagreed, but they should be investigated for their transmissions and EcoBoost units, grossly unreliable.
Eco boom crap.
54mpg. 😂
After my experience with Focus 2.3, never again would I purchase a Ford. Unreliable, disingenuous brand.
What happened?
I pick my focus st up in 5 weeks what’s wrong with them ??
Headlights were first to go wrong, then a few electrical gremlins... then engine malfunction... good luck... the dealers lie, the manufacturer can't do anything... I swear they're programmed to go wrong, so much happened after warranty. I'd never have a Ford again, even with the priv discount. Their engines and transmissions are woeful. But if you want one, get one. This was just my latest experience. Also have a mk3 Kuga now, fingers crossed. I use motorbikes to avoid using the Focus ST 2.3 ecoBOOM.
I've had my Puma 1.5ST for nearly 2 years and it's been faultless. Great car but wouldn't go for the 1.0.
@@andrewdent696 They are made in Romania with EcoSport. Focus are in Germany.
