What you need to know about arthritis and pool exercises

  • It’s important to know…
    That pool exercises can be GREAT for arthritic joints 💦
    Especially when you are just starting out with exercise, are experiencing significant pain and/or are unable to put full weight through each leg without significant pain or difficulty ☝🏽
    There are so many different movements you can do in the pool as well to build initial strength 💪🏽
    Pool exercises can also be great if you don’t trust your balance or if you’re scared your leg(s) will give way ⚠️
    BUT- it’s vital to start progressing to land based movements once you begin to master the movements in the pool. If they don’t feel challenging- you may not be getting the benefit to strength that you think you are 👀
    Most activities you likely want to get better at are on land. So it’s important to start working on land based movements once you’re ready. Exclusive pool movements may not get you there 👍🏽
    A mixture of both land and water is ideal, if water exercise is something you love 💕
    Water exercise isn’t necessary especially if you don’t have access to a pool or genuinely don’t like it. It is an option though! 🙌🏼

    I have RA and I swim swim Miles, it is the best thing I do for me. I'm also a farmer and I have OA also. I do weight bearing exercise every day in my work. Swimming gives me a better way of dealing with the pain and stiffness. Exercise in the pool and swimming laps , miles of laps are totally different

    Crazy how this video pops up today after I was just talking to my son about watching pool aerobics at my local YMCA and I'd like to try that! Luckily I'm getting lots of relief doing your arthritis workouts!

    I have a burning question. I hurt all over for the whole day and next when I take a shower. Why? I always thought watm moist air helped pain arthritis.

    Makes sense so what if you're land based but want to get better with a pool so I can walk but can't run

    I always thought swimming would help in exercising all muscles of the body!!!!

      It certainly does but you have to continue to progress to land strengthening depending on what your goals are.

    I found aqua bells that r like weight lifting in water and it's fine without doing anything on land.....I swear by aqua therapy

      Added resistance can be great. Totally depends on your goals and what you are looking to improve in.
