    I heard quite recently that the human/dog relationship is much older than previously thought. Instead of 12,000 years, it is now believed to be as long as 30,000 years, maybe. And the scientists didn't call it a relationship. They called it co-evolution. I seems that dogs only BARK to us humans. It is most-likely their attempt to talk to us, because they see how much talking WE do. Wild dogs do not do barking between themselves. This would explain why so many people can hear if a dog barking is happy/sad/angry... etc.

    • @effyleven
      @effyleven 8 років тому +21

      ***** That's not what I heard, I got it from an expert talking about what is special about dogs compared with wolves. Besides which, feral dogs are domesticated dogs gone feral... they are not wild in the sense that wolves are wild.

      @@patricksarama4963 not just that though. They are masters at reading body language. Unlike humans they communicate very little with sound. Most of their commination goes through body language so they have become very good at reading it. That's also why it's generally much easier and faster to train a dog with hand gestures or a combination of hand gesture and word command.

      Dog can bark and whine at the same time. Like in that bark but, it depends on what one they do most. Dogs can put a lot of other vocal noises into their barks such as growling, whining, howling etc. And, i have noticed sometimes when my dog is excited and when she is hurt she has different whines. That may be just my dog.

    • @50Banana
      @50Banana 8 років тому +17

      I think it depends on context. I think the noises general meaning is that it wants something, so without context it sounds like it wants help, but when its prefaced with a question or stimuli like food or toys you can tell what it wants.

    The first dog that barked wasn't angry. It was nervous, frightened, and confused. You can't tell that by its bark, but by its stance, its tail, it's ears, and it's eyes. But if you did try to stick your hand through the the cage it would still bite it, not because he was angry, but because of the reasons I listed.

    I believe the most remarkable thing about animals trying to communicate with us, is that they actually TRY. It's amazing, going from instinctual vocalizations for the purposes of warning, breeding and finding, mostly instinctual, to vocalizations with a specfic purpose and intent; language -- that's an utterly revolutionary step for an animal's evolution.

    I had a magazine a long time ago that talked about understanding dog barks and dog body language. One of the things I remember is that a dog's "play growl," which you hear while dogs tug on toys, is more vocal than a true growl. I'm pretty sure that kind of logic extends to other areas - generally if you hear a dog making a lot of "Ruuuruuuruuoooroooruuur" noises they're very excited!

    I've learned that dogs can not see the color red at all, so when you told your dog Oliver to "get your bone", which is red, he can not see it in the grass because the color red does simply not exist to him. It's not because he's stupid he didn't get the bone when you told him to, he simply could not see it.

    • @nickybuttons6443
      @nickybuttons6443 7 років тому +13

      Humans can see red green and blue, along with combinations and variations of those three colors and with that we can see every color (that we know of, its kinda borderline impossible to describe colors we cannot see because you need to see them for yourself, some colorblind people can see these unique and alien colors, point being we can see virtually all colors). Dogs primarily see yellows and blues. They struggle to see greens and reds at all. Thus while dogs have superior hearing and smelling to humans we have superior sight, humans being sight oriented creatures.
      So when it sees green grass and a red bone they appear... well its hard to tell but likely grey or white. Colorless. Thus they would blend into each other, however they would be able to see the bone still. It'd just be harder when it basically camoflauges into the grass.

      That is a myth that is popular because *some* breeds have genetic health problems that good breeders will screen for but bad breeders will not, therefore keeping the problems in the genetic pool of the dogs they're breeding. Mixed dogs and mutts can have the same genetic problems that purebreds do it's just that usually they are mixed enough for those genes to be diluted. I have had vets tell me though that dogs that come from good breeders who screen for health problems usually live longer, healthier lives then mutts of the same size.

    I absolutely believe we can learn to speak dog! My dog Lucky (picture) who I've had for 10 years, have a lot of particular sounds that I've learned to separate. He likes to bark at random objects through the night, like announce at the couch before jumping up on it etc. This hardly ever wakes me up. He's got a particular sound for when I'm on the edge of the bed and he wants to jump up, that doesn't wake me up fully, but makes me roll over, and one for "I need to go out RIGHT NOW", and that one wakes me up instantly, because I know it's urgent.

    I don't like to go into personal history but I have an assistant dog as I am someone who is on the autistic spectrum and I don't think people understand quite how much a dog can change someones life, the responsibility and love I have for my dog has made me less of an introvert and more of a social person and I love my dog so much and he loves me, whenever i feel stressed or down my dog comes to me and rests his head on my shoulder to let me know he's there, wagging his tail, and whenever i sense my dog is stressed I give him a hug, a rub and scratch on the belly and words of relief such as "good boy" and this codependent relationship is really what I needed to help me become the person I am, if I was totally dependent on my dog I would have never grown, if my dog was totally dependent on me, I wouldn't have felt the connection I do as I wouldn't have had someone to be there for me which I needed, it is this codependency that makes having a dog so special.

      No. I meant in general. Obedience training, training the dog to do stupid tricks, the master-slave relationship where it's the dog's role to be a subservient pet that fills a void in the owner's life. I'm not criticising the culture of dog ownership and companionship, but some people are clearly far less enlightened than others when it comes to fixing their broken puppy and turning it into a presentable dog-bot.

    dogs licking faces is disgusting and unhygienic.

    • @Dunkle0steus
      @Dunkle0steus 9 років тому

      Most humans I know brush their teeth. I have kissed a few people. I also had the misfortune of laughing while being knocked to the ground by an English pointer. The pointer thought it would be a good idea to lick my tongue as my mouth was open. Most revolting and disgusting experience I've ever had. It took hours of soap to get the taste out of my mouth. Anyone who says Dog mouths are clean is lying out their ass. They're filthy. They lick their genitals and eat their own poop.

    • @migueltorres6145
      @migueltorres6145 9 років тому +1

      You do know kissing is the exchange of bacteria. Same is with dogs. Btw, some toothpastes have chemicals that can slightly raise the chance of cancer.

    • @Dunkle0steus
      @Dunkle0steus 9 років тому +1

      Miguel Torres give me a source on those facts. Do you know what else increases the chance of cancer? Sunlight. Concrete. There is absolutely no reason not to brush your teeth.

    • @subh1
      @subh1 9 років тому

      Dunkleosteus Humans are the only freaks in animal kingdom to do something as unhygienic as brushing. You destroy the healthy bacterial colony in your mouth every day by brushing, and the bacterial colony in your guts need to work all over again to re-establish it. Without your gut flora you won't be able to digest a single piece of food, and digestion starts in the mouth with your saliva. And we share & exchange useful bacteria with everyone around us all the time (even if we are not kissing them). Even if that's not a good reason to not brush, remember that you save water if you don't.

    • @Dunkle0steus
      @Dunkle0steus 9 років тому

      I'm not going to rant about what you've just said. It is wrong though, and you should do more research. I don't want to get into an argument here. Give me some acclaimed, peer-reviewed studies that link the bacteria in your mouth to the bacteria in your gut and that there is such a thing as "good" mouth bacteria and I will believe you. Humans have different oral bacteria than many animals because we eat more sugars and carbs (food for the bacteria) in the modern day than our bodies are designed for. This is why brushing our teeth is helpful. Animals such as dogs do not have the same high-sugar diet that we do, but they do eat dog food and they eat their own poop, lick their own genitals and can get tooth decay. Ask any veterinarian about canine oral health. I hope you'll take the time to consider what I'm saying instead of simply declaring me wrong. I'm willing to have a proper discussion and respect your right to defend your opinion if you'll show me the same courtesy.

    At 0:59 stating my opinion on this “animals understanding is” idea. I just got a puppy not too long ago and she’s becoming very well trained, she’s pretty smart for her age (1 year) but she still has soooo much to learn. Take my 7 (almost 8) year old cat, I feel like I genuinely understand him. He has different meows (his “hello” vs his “I’m hungry” meows differ very much) and I’ve learned to understand what his different toned meows mean. I can actually recognize a meow like I can understand an “Excuse me” at a public store. And I know dogs can understand tones because if I’m mad at something and yell out loud then my dog will look in my direction and look startled because that’s the same tone I use to yell at her if she pees in the house or does something bad. So I’m sure you can train a dog to understand about 80% of your words (with very high praise and reward) but I believe any animal or living organism with a brain complex enough to interact, adapt and understand the world around them can learn. A dog by itself would almost never learn how to open a door and I’ve come to understand this by the many dogs I work with who go to the wrong side of the door 80% of the time (assuming their front door of the house opens the other way) they would eventually learn the door opens from the right side after constant exposure such as learning very neat tasks. Once the dog understands certain terms, they just need to be able to piece it together. My dog understands her tricks with or without words, I trained her with hand motions to accompany it so she can do all her tricks with only my hand motions or no hand motions and words only as they are interchangeable to her.

    Always been my belief that dogs know more about us than we know about them. They sure are smart, some breeds more than others. Dogs accept people for what they are. I'd talk my dog all time and swear he understood me. I wouldn't want to think of life without dogs.

  • @ShiningSakura
    @ShiningSakura 6 років тому

    You also have to know that dogs often can smell your emotions because your body emits certain smells that they can pick up when something is wrong (hence veterinary trips are worse than they are when YOU are nervous and made a big deal about the trip, they sense that tension and worry and act like something will be wrong and are on high alert and panic)
    They also sense when you are happy, sad, etc.... That is why dogs are so good for emotional help, detecting seizures, when someone is undergoing anaphylactic shock from an allergy, PTSD, and more.
    How do I know, own several dogs and worked in a veterinary clinic for many years.

    @It'sOkayToBeSmart I tried an experiment for myself that you might find interesting. I was staying with a host family in Germany and a cousin of the family came over one day and brought her dog. After the dog was used to me (a new person) I asked her in a very energetic way "Do you want to go for a walk?!?" (in English). The dog didn't respond at all. Then I asked "Willst du spazieren?!?" (roughly the same question with the same inflection but in German) and the dog got very excited and ran to the front door. Clearly it wasn't just the inflection or excitement of my voice, there was at least some meaning behind what was said.
