More than 50 years ago My girlfriend and I cycled from north of london to Devon on a tandem. A round trip of 400 miles. I am watching your story and remembering our journey. The most scary part was descending a long steep hill in the rain without the brakes working due to the water, have fun!
touring on a tandum is one thing. Documenting and creating masterful works of art with your story telling and videos is another. Loving your content and excited to see more!
Like doing 1000km on a tandem isn't hard enough, taking care of cameras, drones, batteries and phones all the time must be quite challenging.. well done!
@@castortoutnu I'm not sure. the weight plays a role here, they carry lots of stuff with them plus the weight of the bike. As a single bike rider, I can quite easily pedal these hills, using the right gear of course.
Missed you guys! This is by far the most cheery, laughter filled, lovely, exciting, uplifting, positive channel on UA-cam ever! Please keep them coming. Cheers from Canada
@Ed Pratt: Starting and stopping on a tandem is much easier if the stoker gets fully on the bike (I.e. has both feet on the pedals) while the pilot/captain straddles it and holds it steady. The stoker then back-pedals to bring the cranks to around "2pm" angle on the pilot's leading side. The pilot then pushes off with that foot on the pedal and sits as quickly as possible on his saddle whilst the stoker continues to pedal. Stopping at junctions etc.the pilot puts one foot down and holds the bike while the stoker remains seated and brings the cranks round ready to push off. To get off the bike the pilot puts both feet down straddling the tandem and holds it steady whilst the stoker dismounts. This technique was taught to me by Pete Bird (of Swallow Tandems). Hope it helps with less wobbly starting and stopping.
Totally agree. They need to stop trying to "start together," and just let Aishola keep herself firmly on back and let Ed do all the work. As one rider is already ready to go, it's much easier; just the captain has to find one pedal and off you go. And with flats? Piece of cake. It's a bit harder with clipless (or toe clips), but no problem after about the 50th time. It's the way it's done. The Proper Method, Santana, Sheldon Brown, et al say the same thing. And 30 years on a tandem (on and off road, all pedals clipless) have taught me same. Technical single track and everything; I have yet to drop my stoker (knocks on head/wood!).
I just finished a 410 mile cycle-tour of the Oregon coast with a friend a couple weeks ago, so it's super awesome to see Ed doing an epic tour of a similar scale!
@@wakjagner Traffic was actually a bit better than I was worried it'd be. ODOT (the Oregon Dept. Of Transportation) has made an effort to make the Southbound shoulder wider. For probably 75% of the Oregon coast, the Southbound shoulder is >3ft (>1m) wide. So for most of the trip, sharing the road was a non-issue, as we had our own lane in effect. Other than a couple sketchy tunnels with nearly non-existent sidewalks, and the occasional rude/stupid driver, it was pretty smooth sailing!
@@wakjagner did it a month ago and it's legit. not one bad experience. all the older folks with big rvs all have ebikes and seem to have more empathy. but I've heard getting yelled at everynow and then does happen.
It is so good to see you back. And you and Aishola seem the happiest couple. It is heartwarming to see two people cooperating successfully on a common goal and having fun doing it. I wish you both the happiness of today continuing forever. And, BTW, regular visits to the barber make you look strange. I'm so used to the Ed of longhair. No matter, it's great that you and Aishola are back, you make a wonderful couple.
New video hype! Good to see you guys again! I asked in the last video, since parting ways with Great Cycling Man, have you guys kept in touch? If so, how is he? There is zero updates on any of his socials. I hope he is safe and well.
Happy to see a new series and adventure! Watching the unicycle series at the start of pandemic lockdowns was a huge push towards doing a tour of my own that I'd been dreaming of for decades, excited to see what the future episodes hold!
You have captured the hills perfectly. I’m getting flashbacks to my own ride to Lands End along the South coast, pushing my bike up ridiculously steep roads. I can’t wait to watch the rest of your adventure.
I've recently started university in Cornwall just as this came out. I feel like this series was made for me to inspire some of my own adventures in the south west!
Sometimes I forgot how beautiful england and the UK in general can be since ive lived here my entire life, but I am truely blessed. Would love to do something like this one day :)
Hi Ed. I'm not sure whether by now You discovered (or perhaps you don't prefer)...the way we start our tandem is I get ready by getting my leg over and holding the bike steady. Then she gets on and sits in the seat with both feet on the pedals. Then I just push off and we go.
I visisted the south west so many times on holiday and walked major parts of the coastpath. Its really enjoyable to see you travel through places I myself can recognise.
You two are such a great team. Thanks for sharing your stories and positive spirits. As a tandem tourist I empathize with the effort of climbing hills. Do you have the lowest approved gearing acceptable for the Rohloff hub? Don't remember what it is off the top of my head. I have a Rohloff on my solo touring/gravel bike and since I am a lighter than average rider I chose to install lower gearing than Rohloff recommends. It is so helpful on a loaded bike. On my tandem I have a 20t front ring and a 34t rear cog on 26" wheels. With that we are able to ride virtually all paved hills.
Enjoying this series. I've toured before on a loaded bike tourer. It certainly is a lot more fun on a tandem tourer that you all are doing. Keep up the excellent videos!
as a fellow tandem tourer your patience and togetherness is wonderful to watch! wonderful job sharing what the experience is like! got me looking at front hub dynamos!
I remember going up and down that hill in Lynmouth by car and that was scary enough, at a 1in4 gradient it is extremely steep and impossible to cycle up with all that extra weight on the tandem. Happy trails guys.
my mum walked and wildcamped the southwest coast path recently just by herself in her 50s - a reminder that if you haven’t been able to do something like this yet (with work, kids, etc) you haven’t run out of time!
Both of you are perfect for each other! A great episode, and that hill out of Lynmouth is tough even for a cathedral! The peacock at 15:54 must mean you were at hunters Inn. North devon is a great coast line and great to see you exploring it. Thanks for the upload
What a great adventure. I love all the detail you provide about how you plan and do things (the 1st video too). All made more interesting for me personally as i live in Somerset, recognised many places and know SJS cycles 👍👍
Fantastic watching you cycling very beautiful but challenging terrain that my wife and I have also cycled on our Thorn tandem, from Minehead through to Porlock weir toll road though thankfully we cycled down that road I recall it being quite a rough road. Pity you didn’t video the decent down into Lynmouth but I guess you both needed to concentrate as it’s thrilling and scary at the same time. Having tried cycling out of Lynmouth up that 25% road we found pushing the tandem up the path that follows the cliff railway up to Lynton A better option.
The commitment to master and drone shots just really levels the story telling of your videos up to that next level of professionalism. God bless you, Ed. You're more dedicated than I. Climbing a step hill and then walking back for the camera? Mercy.
Great 👍. Well done you two, so good to see your adventure well underway. A lovely route through Somerset and on into Devon. The first two camping spots worked out so well, thanks 😊 . Greetings from Scotland 🏴. Cheers, Don 🙋♂️

There's something about stoves flaming up and not firing properly until they get good and hot - especially after a long hiatus.
