Insanely well written video essay, both in text and editing. So many people read a script over unrelated B-roll, so it's really nice to see someone take advantage of the medium. Ty so much for uploading this
I'm glad you liked it! The script is always the hardest part (when voice over isn't the hardest part). Finding clips relevant to the story is actually a lot of fun. In fairness to others, it's much more difficult finding clips when talking about gameplay and mechanics.
Wow.. just wow. This was brilliant. Absolutely amazing. The way you spoke as though you were telling the thoughts in the characters heads, explaining the deeper meaning of everything, taking footage from previous games, your editing etc etc, all just worked so well. Laughed at points, got chills at points, probably the best video essay I have seen. I very rarely leave comments on video essays, and in fact I believe this might be the first time. 19:50 - 20:35 - was probably my favorite part, sounds silly but the way your voice got more enthusiastic along with the classic Uncharted track, the way you followed your brilliant script, and the choice of footage and cuts were all just amazing. Get chills there a lot. Throughout the video you had lots of great edits too, such as 5:32 - 5:43 for example. Whole thing felt very professional. Really shocked to see only 1000 views, and 2k subs. Keep it up!
I love this franchise, ripping out all of my favorite music tracks and scenes from games I know so well made this my favorite video to edit. Getting the VO just right on the part you describe took over a dozen attempts, it means a lot to hear that that payed off.
It definitely did, was brilliant! The nostalgia oohooo. And as do I. Was introduced to it years ago by going in blind and having little clue what the game was about. Hits ma feels hard watching this.
Coming from a filmmaking point of view the quality is fantastic, everything including your cues! This was just as enjoyable as playing the game! Looking forward to more
Yeah the pacing is unconventional but brilliant. Starts out slow, making you feel Nathan’s boredom in life. The adventure slowly gets more exciting until the most exciting chase scene of all time. Then it slows down a bit, and slowly gains momentum as Sam and Nate find Libertalia. Then there’s crazy action until the big twist, and then the action becomes super slow again as Nate and Elena reconcile. Then as they find Sam and need to save him it’s a barrage of action and set pieces. Then it ends with a duel like Star Wars, before a magnificent and slow epilogue. Neil Druckmann is a true genius.
16:18 I'm going through some of your old videos and you're really good at timing your script with the footage on screen. anyway, this is a really great video and illustrates why I love Uncharted 4 so much!
My absolute favorite part of editing is when the VO lines up close enough with an important musical beat, that I can just lay them on top of each other.
95% of the time it just happens in editing. So, Sam and Nate step out into a lost city, and Where is my Mind happened to drop and rise within a second of that line. I can't move the music, because it's important where it starts, so I just space the pauses in the narration a little further (or closer) in editing. Things like Sully pointing on cue when he talks about treasure are like the best kind of accidents, but I still have to move the video around a lot because of when the cutscene "cuts" between shots. The 5% is when I'm going on about all the stuff Avery and Two did with their lives, and it's set up to sync with the main theme as soon as their end is laid bare. I'm moving the music to line it up with that moment. I almost never do that. I never know what music will get used until I have already done the narration, I spend a lot of time listening to the sound tracks just trying to find music that will work. It's exciting for Uncharted, Horizon, Night in the Woods, games that have really versatile sound tracks, but it's tough when RE7 has a great somber theme, a ton of horror tracks with awful screeching, and only the "safe room" track in between. I feel like I owe a lot to the composers. These are not as good without their music.
I think Uncharted 4's story resonates more than ever to me now... I'm not like Nathan Drake. I haven't found great treasure, I don't have an Elena or Sully. But I've been afraid I'm not going to be the person I want to be, after so many setbacks. It's felt like my hard work hasn't been worth it. And I've found it hard to accept sometimes that what I do have...the people I care about, and the effect I've had on their lives, is what gives me value. "Sometimes you gotta realize what you've gotta keep and...what you're gonna let go."
Watched this a long time ago and finally found it again. One of the best games of all time. And a video essay of equal quality in my opinion. Deserves more views
