    Insanely well written video essay, both in text and editing. So many people read a script over unrelated B-roll, so it's really nice to see someone take advantage of the medium. Ty so much for uploading this

    • @OrangeLightnings
      @OrangeLightnings  6 років тому +2

      I'm glad you liked it! The script is always the hardest part (when voice over isn't the hardest part). Finding clips relevant to the story is actually a lot of fun. In fairness to others, it's much more difficult finding clips when talking about gameplay and mechanics.

    Wow.. just wow. This was brilliant. Absolutely amazing. The way you spoke as though you were telling the thoughts in the characters heads, explaining the deeper meaning of everything, taking footage from previous games, your editing etc etc, all just worked so well. Laughed at points, got chills at points, probably the best video essay I have seen. I very rarely leave comments on video essays, and in fact I believe this might be the first time. 19:50 - 20:35 - was probably my favorite part, sounds silly but the way your voice got more enthusiastic along with the classic Uncharted track, the way you followed your brilliant script, and the choice of footage and cuts were all just amazing. Get chills there a lot. Throughout the video you had lots of great edits too, such as 5:32 - 5:43 for example. Whole thing felt very professional. Really shocked to see only 1000 views, and 2k subs. Keep it up!

      I love this franchise, ripping out all of my favorite music tracks and scenes from games I know so well made this my favorite video to edit. Getting the VO just right on the part you describe took over a dozen attempts, it means a lot to hear that that payed off.

    most fans didnt like the pacing but the slow chapters towards the end are actually my favorite.

    • @David-dv5ov
      @David-dv5ov Рік тому +1

      Yeah the pacing is unconventional but brilliant. Starts out slow, making you feel Nathan’s boredom in life. The adventure slowly gets more exciting until the most exciting chase scene of all time. Then it slows down a bit, and slowly gains momentum as Sam and Nate find Libertalia. Then there’s crazy action until the big twist, and then the action becomes super slow again as Nate and Elena reconcile. Then as they find Sam and need to save him it’s a barrage of action and set pieces. Then it ends with a duel like Star Wars, before a magnificent and slow epilogue.
      Neil Druckmann is a true genius.

    • @OrangeLightnings
      @OrangeLightnings  6 років тому +2

      My absolute favorite part of editing is when the VO lines up close enough with an important musical beat, that I can just lay them on top of each other.

    • @Flynxify
      @Flynxify 6 років тому +1

      Orange Lightning Do you plan certain bits in advance or does that only happen during editing?

    • @OrangeLightnings
      @OrangeLightnings  6 років тому +2

      95% of the time it just happens in editing. So, Sam and Nate step out into a lost city, and Where is my Mind happened to drop and rise within a second of that line. I can't move the music, because it's important where it starts, so I just space the pauses in the narration a little further (or closer) in editing. Things like Sully pointing on cue when he talks about treasure are like the best kind of accidents, but I still have to move the video around a lot because of when the cutscene "cuts" between shots. The 5% is when I'm going on about all the stuff Avery and Two did with their lives, and it's set up to sync with the main theme as soon as their end is laid bare. I'm moving the music to line it up with that moment. I almost never do that.
      I never know what music will get used until I have already done the narration, I spend a lot of time listening to the sound tracks just trying to find music that will work. It's exciting for Uncharted, Horizon, Night in the Woods, games that have really versatile sound tracks, but it's tough when RE7 has a great somber theme, a ton of horror tracks with awful screeching, and only the "safe room" track in between. I feel like I owe a lot to the composers. These are not as good without their music.

    I think Uncharted 4's story resonates more than ever to me now...
    I'm not like Nathan Drake. I haven't found great treasure, I don't have an Elena or Sully. But I've been afraid I'm not going to be the person I want to be, after so many setbacks. It's felt like my hard work hasn't been worth it. And I've found it hard to accept sometimes that what I do have...the people I care about, and the effect I've had on their lives, is what gives me value.

    KyleKalGreen once said that "it is art that helps us have a life" when correcting a intolerant woman protesting for the camera to be turned off, proclaiming: "turn it off, this is important , this is not art , this is life!!"
    We cherish pieces of entertainment that we hold dear because we find dopamine-making fun in it, while relating or projecting something from ourselves into it all , be it a science fiction role model or a escapist fantasy setting , we all aspire a sense of fulfillment from seeing enjoyable storylines come to fruition to better visualize our own potential achievements.
    and no matter how many times i hear a Closing overture to a great film or the Staff Credits to some of the greatest games ever , i cannot help but be enveloped in a sensation of wholesome closure for myself.
    it worth was seeing the end of this , it was worth caring enough to remember it all , it was even worth seeing all this again.
    it still holds up.
    And i hope that one day i can cease to divide real-life ordeals with in-game ones to fully realize the importance of both while implementing a meaningful combination of/for both.
    to Share it all.
    Damn.

      Without the readers, viewers, and players bringing their own ideas and life experiences with them, stories are just the mechanics of "what happened".
      I think a lot of people on UA-cam do an amazing job analyzing, and articulating why something is objectively good, but less often do I see that same effort put into why it SUBJECTIVELY matters. WHY is it compelling? And it doesn't have to be for a specific, personal reason. It just has to be an honest, no bullshit, "this is what this story brought out of me".
      On your last paragraph, when something connects with you, real life or otherwise, just start writing, and rewriting, until something clicks into place. It's a surprisingly frustrating process, but it's given me a great appreciation for the real artists, and I've learned a lot about myself.

    I can totally understand why people love Uncharted 4 story but for me it sucks. Thematically it goes against the entire rest of the series and has the most negative interpretation of Drake's character and lifestyle possible. It tells you that the things that you're passionate about aren't worth dying For unless those things are other people. It tells you that because the pursuit of greatness never ends you should not pursue greatness. It tells you that Drake is the kind of person who would end up like those pirates if not for Elena. Despite the fact that Drake was nothing like them he's always maintained a small group of a loyal friend and would never and has never been portrayed as the kind of person who would betray another for monetary benefit.
    Uncharted 4 makes the mistakes a lot of later entries in long running video game franchises make. They feel the need to make them characters more "mature" and call into question the morality and maturity of the character in previous games. Uncharted 4 should have been a celebration of Drake's character and his journeys instead it's an indictment.

    • @Sheabuttertend
      @Sheabuttertend Рік тому +1

      I could not agree more and bless your heart for being brave enough to say it. While it’s a cute theme in theory, Nathan never seemed to care about the treasure (he never ever gets it, so why would he keep doing it anyway?) as much as he did the journey of it. Sam wanted to do what he loved with his brother for their mother’s memory, it was never about the gold. And it makes me sad to think that some people may internalize that their passions are less important than the people that claim to love them, but would rather they change their personality and identity to be exactly in the mold they want. I think Nathan and Elena are great people, but just not great people for each other. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.
