I agree. The game is a little more "primitive" than the later games, and clearly had a few issues that the developer took to heart to fix in later entries of the series, but it's still a solid, polished, gorgeous adventure game that almost perfectly captures the feeling and atmosphere of a summer blockbuster in video game form - something I had never experienced before this game. Later games were even better, but only because they were built on such a strong foundation that they stayed true to.

I played Drake’s Fortune for the first time recently. It definitely is the Uncharted that holds up the least well in my opinion. While the shootouts probably are my favorite sections of the series, I think there were too many of them in 1. And the enemy AI and set pieces weren’t good enough to keep the constant shootouts interesting
@@grantmalone I definitely disagree that the gameplay mechanics are dated. Because I think that overall, it’s the best that Uncharted has been. If you really pick it apart, the previous games had either mediocre to outright bad mechanics. Platforming was always best in small doses, and it would often glitch or not work well. Especially so in certain titles. Combat was okay, there was only one way to effectively do it though. Which was to run and gun and cover shoot, which could get really repetitive fast. In the initial trilogy, the games were best when they could combine all these elements to create the best whole with at best, mediocre pieces. Now, I’m not trying to say that Uncharted 4 has the best mechanics in gaming. Or that even a majority of your complaints are unfounded. I’m not going to tell you which games you should or shouldn’t like. Just wanted to put out my own two cents
There were a few moments in the game where Elena ushers Nate along without her, very suspiciously almost, but those moments never ended up being traitor-esque. Like when they find that boat off the coast, and she tells Nate to go without her, or when they're still escaping the bunker and she says "you know I can't make that jump" "just save me later.." IDK maybe I was looking to much into it.
I really loved Uncharted 4 and the first 3 as well. I found the camera angles in Uncharted 1 very awkward, but the story was good, but very short. Another great video :D
This was the first game that ever blew me away graphically. When you first walk into the jungle area, the vibrant greens, the way the grass and plants moved. His freaking clothes got wet in the water, like what!!! I thought to myself, this is the future! I honestly never closely analyzed the game back then. I just remember it being a great story experience. Since then I have played them all and I definitely do love the series as a whole. There is no Uncharted without this one.
I’m not even joking I’ve played this game at least twice and I never knew the Roman numeral thing was a puzzle😭 I always just walked the way that looked correct and never realized you’re supposed to use your book
I like that there’s no HUD in these games. It made you figure it out on your own. Helped with the immersion of both an “action movie” and a “treasure Hunter”
I only just recently competed the first game four times in a row followed by the sequel. Such a classic game and is so much *fun!* It also helped me cope while my dog, Merlin was ill and then passed away soon after. 💕
Sure it's outdated for it's time, but for a 7 year old boy who only had played Mario 64, my mind was completely blown away when I played it that Christmas night. I never thought games would get any better, how far we've come lol
When you think about it, the unlogical scenes and over-the-top ending is in the end functional with the realistic U4. It's like his past life is some made up and over-the-top story from some game or something, and now he should live a normal boring life. It works! Man, Naughty Dog's games are awesome.
@@fredstead5652 It's about the nature of the story and characters that is realistic. Of course the gameplay things are not. No game is realistic. And yes, U4 isn't even trying to be in that matter, but still it balances the action spectacle with the somewhat realistic weight of the action.
I feel like this game doesn’t hold up well especially compared to the other games in the franchise. But one moment in this game that will always stick with me is the Bunker chapter. It scared the shit out of 13 year old me when I played it for the first time
With the car thing, you could give the vehicle a smoking animation as a Heath bar and give the vehicle a certain amount of health that’ll let it be played on harder difficulties
As some who has beat the entire Uncharted series on crushing, remembering the jet ski section still gives me massive anxiety and I’m still scared of water
You wanted a suggestion for damage feedback, here ya go! You could keep the subtle red elements but: Have the black and white effect close in from the corners in a ring/circle so where you are most probably focusing on, the middle of the screen, still always has color. It stays colourful around about in front of Nate and his gun when he's aiming, so a good portion of the top and bottom of the screen is still coloured, where most of the sides will be greyed out when taking heavy damage. It engulfs everything in black, white and bloom when Nate dies, perhaps the edges ripple so it doesn't look so static
Three things Ima say about Drake’s Fortune: -Eddie’s my favorite villain -Elena’s a badass/my video game crush -The bunker/zombie level scares the crap out of me every time
I was actually told to skip this installment as someone who just went through the sequels for the first time, but I just watched it anyway. Great video!
I absolutely love the uncharted theme music😭 anytime I hear it I legit get shot back to when I was 8 yr old playing it for the very first time, this series will always have love from me. Even tho it’s not perfect by any means😮💨
Just platinumed this game a few days ago, game was way ahead of its time back in 2007 with the climbing mechanics and visuals, and considering U2 and 3 dropped just 2 and 4 years later, giving us amazing visuals for Shambhala and Ubar. That’s some amazing game development there
Tomb Raider Legend has way better climbing/platforming, it launched 1 year earlier and on 6th gen consoles too. Hell, the entire Prince of Persia Sands of Time trilogy wipes the floor in platforming with Uncharted.
Was anyone else absolutely terrified of the zombie things in the Nazi base? I had the miss fortune of playing that at night and I couldn’t sleep after it
@@The_chosen_one23 My kids and I each had our own save points with Drake's Fortune. I wouldn't watch when they were playing so I could see everything for the first time when I played it. One afternoon I heard screaming from the basement as my boys were playing. It kept going and going. I had made them promise not to tell me anything where I hadn't played. All I got from them was "You aren't going to believe what's next!" We still laugh at that and now they are getting close to their 30's.
I was maybe around 11 when I first played Drakes Fortune, I wasnt allowed to own any scary/overly violent games. At the point where the zombies came out my brother was watching it with me as it happened and my eyes went wide and I said "Uh oh, moms not gonna let me play anymore"
In regards to working in a solution besides the gray screen. I think you could probably have the character use a voice inflection that gives the player a warning that this person is about to eat the big one! Great video
Great video! One of my all time favorite games. With regards to Nate not trusting Sully, in your story analysis, I interpreted it as Nate was conflicted between what kind of a person Nate knows Sully to be and what he appears to be. He even mentions that Sully is a lot of things but he's not a backstabber. I think Nate does trust Sully, but only for a brief moment was that trust put to test.
When I first got my PS4 it came with Uncharted 4, I made sure I got the Nathan Drake collection and played from this game first. I find myself always replaying this game first whenever I revisit these games, mainly so that it's flaws don't come out to a jarring degree. Playing each game sequentially feels like the best way to experience them.
I've only recently played all the uncharted brilliant series for the first time. I really enjoyed them except the first game.I felt I had to force myself through it just to get to the sequels. It doesn't hold up well at all but from 2 onwards they are brilliant games.
at 7:21 you can see that last bullet the enemy shoots actually doesn’t hit Nathan but the screen gets grey so there might be validity in him getting lucky
I said to my brother after I beat the game: _"This game is a 7/10, but would be an 8/10 if it could just not suck for five seconds."_ I still feel that way.
uncharted drakes fortune was literally the first game i played when i had the ps3, i sucked at it but it became fun immediantly. this game was my escape when i was going through some stuff.
Well this wouldn’t be completely realistic but a way to show a character’s health in a game could be shown through damage of the character, maybe have 3 different tiers of damage, Tier 1: damaged clothes Tier 2: the character starts getting scratches Tier 3: the character is dripping blood and hunched over And have a menu explaining the tiers at the beginning of the game, kinda like x men origins except u don’t heal
Ik I’m super late, but I just found your channel and I really like it so far. I’ve watched your videos on Arkham Games, Spider-Man Games, GOTG and InFamous:Second Son.
I got my ps5 march this year and it being my first PS Uncharted 1 remaster was the first in the series I played. I had so much fun and can’t wait for your vids on the other games!
During pandemic I platinum’ed the Drake Collection on PS4 as well as Uncharted 4 on Crushing. When analyzing gameplay I have to point out that playing on Brutal changed things to the point where it’s almost a different game.
The ending being really different is literally the whole point. Of course the location changes. Of course the enemies are unlike others. That's the twist.
12:10 There's actually this super easy trick that works on every Uncharted game (but it's a bit harder to pull of in 3 and 4) where if you blindfire shoot a human enemy at least once and then melee them Nate/Chloe instakills them with a special animation
In the car section where you have to shoot backwards, a way to work in a health bar would have been the amount of blood on the vehicles windscreen. This way you also get an option for visual storytelling if you decide to use it.
I’ll always remember being 7 years old in the summer of 2008 and my brother who just graduated 8th grade had enough money saved up where he was able to buy my uncles launch day 60gb ps3 which he was looking to sell. He gave him an incredible deal. And one of the first games that blew my mind was uncharted. I couldn’t believe the power of the ps3 compared to ps2. It seemed unreal. This game permanently made me feel ps3 was prestigious. Such a strong feeling it still feels that way to this. The ps4 never gave me the prestigious feeling of the ps3 more like ps2 vibes from the ps4 but the ps5 definitely feels like ps3 vibes and I just finished playing uncharted 1 moving on to uncharted 2. And it’s just sooo nostalgic.
gotta say this was the first game i played with no before tie ins and the first i loved and an original series that i invested in i love drake himself as he reminded me of a close friend i had back in school
Agreed with pretty much everything you said! Great video. On an additional note, I thought there was WAY too much combat, and it's even a sort of meta commentary because Drake continuously comments on the number of enemies. Honestly I wish they cut the combat by HALF, just way too much arduous combat game play.
Elaina finding her way is actually pretty plausible, and you answered your own question on Sully. It's more for plot tension for the player who doesn't know Sully. Also Sully probably didn't "play dead", that would still hurt a lot and it probably dropped him not to mention shock and not knowing if he was hit or not etc.
My first Uncharted game was Uncharted 2. I was terrible at the game at first cuz I've never played a shooting game but after a couple of hours I got used to the controls
This is by far my favorite game of all time. I know it has its flaws but it's freakin Uncharted, the one that started it all! I got it the summer after 8th grade when I was 14 years old. I had seen the trailer for the 2nd one at E3 and looked up the first and had never been so amazed by the graphics, the gameplay, and the story. I didn't have the means to buy a new PS3 or even a used one in good condition so I learned how to fix a broken one and got one and fixed it for 150 which was better than the 300-400 the fat ones were still going for at the time. I still have that og ps3 and it works just as well. This game is what made the ps3 my favorite console during that generation.
UC1 was and still is a terrific game. Is it as polished as later games, of course not, but it has great gameplay, great characters and a great landscape.
Regarding puzzles, I never understood how on earth did Francis Drake manage to write on his diary every single solution and then leave it to be buried at sea if he actually died on that island.
the roman numerals problem fully had me stumped for like a half hour lol. maybe i didn’t immediately understand that the 3 numbers on the map were “if you see any of these, it’s safe.” i thought it was “take each of these paths in order,” and when that wasn’t an option i was lost for awhile 😂
You talked about the Roman numeral puzzle in the original Uncharted when I played the game I didn't even realize the answer was in the notebook I just went for it.
"The answer is given to you from the start." Me: "WTF do these drawings mean? What's the pattern? What do I do?" *proceeds to turn statues in random directions with no plan for the next two hours*
I only played it because I got the Nathan Drake Collection for free. I already played 4 and 2. Somehow this game impressed me. It has a weird charm that I cannot explain
8:40 the thing that worked for me was putting on a different filter but i just play the remake. The screen doesn't go black and white for ine if them it just gets blurry
You're right about Drake's Fortune being a weak link in the series, but I actually prefer this one to 3 somewhat. I like Uncharted 1's atmosphere most out of the trilogy. There is a lead up to the Descendants when you find strange footprints on the island. Being on two islands (that look almost identical) led to monotonous environments, but I really liked the feeling of adventure. The Descendants are still the best endgame enemy in the series to me because they were a genuine surprise on my first playthrough. I really like the fact that everyone in the game feels like a rookie-- it really does mirror the "greatness from small beginnings" motto. In hindsight, the game could have benefitted from being wide-linear with some branching paths since you're on an island. Lost Legacy ended up doing that, though.

15:20 I agree. I never even knew that this was a puzzle. I just went the way I wanted, and that was it. I didn't even look at the numbers.
I’m not even joking I’ve played this game at least twice and I never knew the Roman numeral thing was a puzzle😭 I always just walked the way that looked correct and never realized you’re supposed to use your book
I read the II V VII and then just followed those numbers like we were meant to. But it was so simple it was hardly a puzzle
RIP merlin
RIP Merlin hope you're ok
First game I got for PS3 and still one of my favorite series. Great video.
Facts lol
Sort of, but Uncharted 4 is definitely unrealistic. One man kills an entire army, and shrugs of direct gunfire in a few seconds?
@@fredstead5652 It's about the nature of the story and characters that is realistic. Of course the gameplay things are not. No game is realistic. And yes, U4 isn't even trying to be in that matter, but still it balances the action spectacle with the somewhat realistic weight of the action.
I feel like this game doesn’t hold up well especially compared to the other games in the franchise. But one moment in this game that will always stick with me is the Bunker chapter. It scared the shit out of 13 year old me when I played it for the first time
@Dutch Plan Der Linde a game being good is subjective to the person playing it, to most people the game is ok-good.
@Dutch Plan Der Linde nah in 07, it was pretty good kinda like gta lll in 01, it’s just that the rest trumps this so much.
@Dutch Plan Der Linde Nah, it was great then and is still great now.
@Dutch Plan Der Linde I agree
@Dutch Plan Der Linde Or maybe you can respect others opinion ?
I must have played through these games so many times. They’re absolutely phenomenal and hold much nostalgia to me
Personally my most nostalgic game, played it on PS3 and remastered on PS4, always love to replay this game..one of my top games ever.
That theme tune is one of the best tunes in gaming, really gets u pumped up
I would love to see you cover more Uncharted games. Thank you for this!
I would love to see that to
With the car thing, you could give the vehicle a smoking animation as a Heath bar and give the vehicle a certain amount of health that’ll let it be played on harder difficulties
Three things Ima say about Drake’s Fortune:
-Eddie’s my favorite villain
-Elena’s a badass/my video game crush
-The bunker/zombie level scares the crap out of me every time
Facts
was pretty much resident evil in the zombie part lol. uncharted 1 is my least favorite of the series, but i love the zombie part
@@masonbaldwin3881 same bro
I was actually told to skip this installment as someone who just went through the sequels for the first time, but I just watched it anyway. Great video!
ive been waiting for this for so long thank u man
I absolutely love the uncharted theme music😭 anytime I hear it I legit get shot back to when I was 8 yr old playing it for the very first time, this series will always have love from me. Even tho it’s not perfect by any means😮💨
Honestly Drakes fortune and Arkham asylum don’t need a remaster they need a remake with the polished mechanics.
Arkham Asylum with refined combat like Arkham Knight would be a dream come true
Explorer mode for Uncharted 1 is pretty much that.
Facts
Just platinumed this game a few days ago, game was way ahead of its time back in 2007 with the climbing mechanics and visuals, and considering U2 and 3 dropped just 2 and 4 years later, giving us amazing visuals for Shambhala and Ubar. That’s some amazing game development there
Tomb Raider Legend has way better climbing/platforming, it launched 1 year earlier and on 6th gen consoles too.
Hell, the entire Prince of Persia Sands of Time trilogy wipes the floor in platforming with Uncharted.
The green jungles of UC1 look so beautiful in my opinion.
Man i still remember getting the uncharted 2 for my ps3 that was my first experience with a story focused game.
Same here
Cant wait for the uncharted 2 critique
1:20 Naughty Dong is the best developer ever
Was anyone else absolutely terrified of the zombie things in the Nazi base? I had the miss fortune of playing that at night and I couldn’t sleep after it
Same lol 😂
@@The_chosen_one23 My kids and I each had our own save points with Drake's Fortune. I wouldn't watch when they were playing so I could see everything for the first time when I played it. One afternoon I heard screaming from the basement as my boys were playing. It kept going and going. I had made them promise not to tell me anything where I hadn't played. All I got from them was "You aren't going to believe what's next!" We still laugh at that and now they are getting close to their 30's.
Lol
Can’t wait for your video on uncharted 2. Much like you it was my first game in the series and it will forever be one of my favourites
Same
Hey man, great stuff! I always have wanted to take a look at the Uncharted games, I have yet to sit down and try them though. Maybe one day! haha
Be warned, “Brutal” difficulty is a bitch!
You should do one for shadow of the colossus if you haven’t yet, beautiful game !
That’s what I’ve been saying 😃
When I first got my PS4 it came with Uncharted 4, I made sure I got the Nathan Drake collection and played from this game first. I find myself always replaying this game first whenever I revisit these games, mainly so that it's flaws don't come out to a jarring degree. Playing each game sequentially feels like the best way to experience them.
The uncharted score is so good. Almost brings a tear 2 my eye. Remembering me playing them 4 the 1st time.
I've only recently played all the uncharted brilliant series for the first time. I really enjoyed them except the first game.I felt I had to force myself through it just to get to the sequels. It doesn't hold up well at all but from 2 onwards they are brilliant games.
I know what you mean
at 7:21 you can see that last bullet the enemy shoots actually doesn’t hit Nathan but the screen gets grey so there might be validity in him getting lucky
can you add one last vid to this playlist reviewing the entire lost legacy. I love this playlist my man!!
I said to my brother after I beat the game: _"This game is a 7/10, but would be an 8/10 if it could just not suck for five seconds."_
I still feel that way.
7 is too high. Its a 6
Not at all, it’s a 9. And i have no idea what you mean by sucking and being equated to a 7, simply skill diff.
@@roosterjackson7258 Skill issue.
Really great video Aqua, this video is amazing, keep doing what u love mate!
never been this early, love this game and love your channel keep up the good work bro
uncharted drakes fortune was literally the first game i played when i had the ps3, i sucked at it but it became fun immediantly. this game was my escape when i was going through some stuff.
Well this wouldn’t be completely realistic but a way to show a character’s health in a game could be shown through damage of the character, maybe have 3 different tiers of damage,
Tier 1: damaged clothes
Tier 2: the character starts getting scratches
Tier 3: the character is dripping blood and hunched over
And have a menu explaining the tiers at the beginning of the game, kinda like x men origins except u don’t heal
Ik I’m super late, but I just found your channel and I really like it so far. I’ve watched your videos on Arkham Games, Spider-Man Games, GOTG and InFamous:Second Son.
It's been 3 months! Excited to see more Uncharted reviews!!
Expect one in January!
Love your content, Aqua.
Literally just decided to replay the uncharted series for no reason and just beat this game yesterday
Awesome stuff man!
12:10 There's actually this super easy trick that works on every Uncharted game (but it's a bit harder to pull of in 3 and 4) where if you blindfire shoot a human enemy at least once and then melee them Nate/Chloe instakills them with a special animation
I’ll have to give it a try for Uncharted 2!
Happy you are exploring other games! Hope you review what you care about but gona support either way!
Back at it with a banger man I genuinely get excited when I get these notifications, keep doing what your doing 😁
Just subscribed, you make such high quality videos you deserve more subscribers
In the car section where you have to shoot backwards, a way to work in a health bar would have been the amount of blood on the vehicles windscreen. This way you also get an option for visual storytelling if you decide to use it.
Loved the vid, look forward to you continuing the series✊🏾
I used to keep my PS3 on with the uncharted startup screen open just to listen to that fantastic score
Bro I literally asked for a video of the uncharted series Months ago and now we get it wow I'm not mad just disappointed it took so long
I’ll always remember being 7 years old in the summer of 2008 and my brother who just graduated 8th grade had enough money saved up where he was able to buy my uncles launch day 60gb ps3 which he was looking to sell.
I was terrible at the game at first cuz I've never played a shooting game but after a couple of hours I got used to the controls
i lol when you mentioned sully pretending to be dead when he got shot.
Uncharted is the franchise that I love the most and 4 is my favourite and I even brought Drake's locket...missing Nate,Sully and Elena😓
27:21 why didn’t Elania put the camera in her mouth instead of just dropping it. That part still bugs me
Uncharted, the greatest action and adventure video game franchise ever made!
That's a good review. Have not played this in ages. Was looking for something to play today, will get me the ND collection. Good suggestion. Thanks.
You talked about the Roman numeral puzzle in the original Uncharted when I played the game I didn't even realize the answer was in the notebook I just went for it.
"The answer is given to you from the start."
Me: "WTF do these drawings mean? What's the pattern? What do I do?"
*proceeds to turn statues in random directions with no plan for the next two hours*
Great video as always...keep it up!
I only played it because I got the Nathan Drake Collection for free. I already played 4 and 2. Somehow this game impressed me. It has a weird charm that I cannot explain
Yea it does. Naughty dog did a great job with this game
Something hilarious about the Roman numeral puzzle is I didn’t even know it was a puzzle o just went where I wanted to and i still continued the story
15:21 I didn't even pay attention to the numbers because I didn't know what it meant, and everything worked out.
