    It's MISA's birthday today and the Maids are playing live tonight in Otaru. I will be there to wish her a happy birthday! This will be my fourth Band-Maid serving in 8 days. Really, see them live if it at all possible, you will not regret it! :-)

    My hat is off to both of these young ladies! .... To Saiki for jumping over her own shadow (keyword: maid outfits) to realize her dream of becoming a professional singer, but also, if not entirely voluntarily, to have the operation on her vocal cords. Knowing that this could have destroyed her dream in an instant must have been nerve-wracking for this young woman. And she carried that around with her for quite a while, being confronted with it all the time... And what can I say about Kanami? From the very beginning, she was the one who unconsciously aroused my interest the most. She has a special charisma, which I actually only know from creative people. From studying with her career/music in mind, to teaching herself programming on the PC, which I know all too well, and how time-consuming and exhausting that can be, to having the perseverance to write songs over and over again for several years that no one wanted in the end... I admire this little lady very much and am happy for her that all this has deservedly paid off. And as much as I love rock music, I've always had a thing for skillfully played piano music. Which is why I always have an ear even for their live intros or the little details in the backing tracks (like in 'From Now On') and simply enjoy them, knowing which creative mind they came from. :)
    I've seen much worse and less informative official documentaries. Ohrenje and Kasper have done a tremendous job with this series from my point of view. Rewatching it with you or others and hearing your impressions is great fun for me. So thank you for sharing these videos with us. 🙏🏻🙋🏻‍♂

    The guys speaking about Kanami are really great guys, are big Band Maid fans and are all worth watching. Give them a look. Wave Potter, The Champ of Medium, Ryan Mears, Dicodec. They also get together and do a multicast that’s worthwhile. They are genuine fans and provide great analysis and insight. Thanks for taking time to learn about the band members and help spread the word. Rock on, good sir. Rock on!👍🎸🎤🎸🥁🎸

    As far as songs written for them vs songs written by them, they took the influences and sound of the ghost writers and incorporated it into their sound. But if there is one thing that separates their older works vs their recent work is the complexity. Kanami writes music that is WAY more complex than what was written for them back in the day.

    • @Brunnen-G
      @Brunnen-G Рік тому +8

      actually, they are not "ghost writers". Band-Maid don't use "ghost-writers". Song writers have proper credentials on all of B-M releases.

    • @nomennescio4604
      @nomennescio4604 Рік тому +2

      To be fair, the band has indicated from the very beginning they were always heavily involved in the arrangements and how the songs would be played. To the point of even asking song writers to change things at times, which was apparently considered uppity and impolite in the Japanese music industry (like who do these little greenhorns think they are? kind of thing...) Which likely is why even with all these people writing for them there has always been this gradual development of the sound going on, as the band developed their arrangement and playing skills.

    For me, these two members will always be my favorites, because they define that Band-Maid sound for me. Saiki's voice and Kanami's writing. I love all the members and know how much each and every one brings to the band though, and no singular member is more or less than the others... it's something that makes this band great.
    Let's hope they want to keep doing this for a long time because as long as they keep doing it, we will keep listening and supporting them!
    Also, Ohrenje's the man, I remember being asked to join his discord super early on, when he just started it. He's done so much to bring together and expand the Band-Maid community.

    Well, another almost-hour killed doing Band-Maid stuff... Thanks, John! Thanks to Ohrenje too, he's a super-fan. Wave Potter, Champ of Medium, Alan of Dicodec and Ryan Mear are the commenters near the end of the video. They're the nucleus of Gaijin Guys, who do a weekly podcast about Japanese music, good stuff. They're all musicians and great reactors and they (and others) were important to me in my early Band-Maid fandom. A handfull of their early songs has that "feel" of a Band Maid composition. The band is credited with music arrangement on many of them. Those songs, Real Existence, Non-Fiction Days, Freedom, Thrill, especially, seem to resonate with the band. Still in set lists rotation to this day, and probably influenced their song style.

    • @garylai363
      @garylai363 Рік тому +3

      Yeah, and I think it's great that they don't have the attitude of, "we don't need them anymore," but more along the lines of being grateful to their songwriters and being able to learn off of them, in typical Japanese fashion. Also it was something Miku and probably the rest of the band was always trying to do, which was take control of their own entity and destiny, always looking for a better management that could take them further.

    Great work isn't it? Ohrenje made some totally professional work, and he has other projects in the works 👍. Important: all informations here have been checked, there's absolutely no fan fantasy or exageration, it's so rare I have to mention it. About Saiki's past throat problems: yes, you can develop polyps on your vocals cords by using your voice inapropriately, without proper training. That's what happened to her, and once the polyps removed, she started training with a pro vocal coach and take great care of her voice - no problem have arisen since then, her voice is stronger than ever.
    About Kanami, there's one important piece of information missing here - because it wasn't knowed at the time: she has perfect pitch. We heard about it thanks to famous producer Tony Visconti, who became their friend, and heard her helping Miku tuning her guitar by singing her the right notes - he then asked "she has perfect pitch right? " and Kanami nodded, joking about herself being a "human tuner" 😉.

    I was at five of the shows, all up front on the rail, during the 2022 US tour (Dallas, Houston, New York, Boston, and Chicago - I regret not going to the last minute added New Jersey show). They made each show unique and amazing, with slight changes in songs to each set list.
    The MC breaks were always a fun time to be "one-on-one" with Saiki. This is when she started the "learn a Japanese word" with Kanami. Saiki and Kanami would pair up on stage and teach the crowd a Japanese word, use it in a sentence, and have the crowd repeat the word. And of course there was Akane and her banana eating and peel toss to the crowd segment. SO much FUN!
    If you (anyone) have a chance to see Band Maid in concert - DO NOT pass it up!

    I am not really sure if Kanamis early Songs where not good enough , rather than the Producing Company having other Ideas where they should go. Guess the Studio wanted them in another Direction. Just imagine if Love Passion Matador ( Cute Song anyway/Chorus catchy AF ) - ( A Side of the Single ) would heve been their first ( and maybe only ) MV. We have to be very thankfull the Girls insisted to do Thrill instead.

    Namie Amuro lol. Now there is a name i haven't heard in awhile. Namie is basically the Japanese equivalent of Madonna or Janet Jackson in influence & pure star power.
    Namie is really more then a mere artist in Japan but an institution. When her retirement was announced her last tour sold out in minutes.
    It was even broadcast across the country in theatres even lol. I remember Namie being more an influence on Ganguro culture and fashion then maid however.
    Although it makes since why Kanami or Saiki might look up to her. She sold 40 million records over her 20+ year career.
    Since her solo debut, she achieved top 10 singles for 23 consecutive years (#1 for solo artist). All of her albums are certified Platinum, and her debut solo album, Sweet 19 Blues.
    Was the best selling album in Japan. She is the only artist in Japan to sell a million albums in her teens, 20s, 30s and 40s. Her last album, Finally had topped the year-end album charts.
    From both Oricon and Billboard Japan for two consecutive years (the first and only artist in the Japanese Music Industry to do so).
    Amuro is the recipient of World Music Awards, Japan Record Awards, Japan Gold Disc Awards, and MTV Video Music Awards Japan, among many others. So i find it interesting the Band-Maid connection here. :)

    You can hear some influence in their own songs from the songs written for them.
    The old songs written for them were way more formulatic than the songs written by Kanami. Kanami allows other band members to be actively involved in arrangement of their songs. Which means five members with different tastes and playing styles bringing ideas and creating the distinctive, very unique, layered and colorful sound. There's the playfulness and freedom in their music that give us the joy.
    Of course there are some old songs written for them that I love - Real Existence and Freezer are some of the bests. I like pop-punk song like be ok and groovy brand new road, etc.
    Freefom and The Non-fiction Days I think we're written for them. As awesome as those songs are, they don't have their usual "second verse thing" going. Also bass isn't as prominent as the songs written by the band.
    Compare The Non-fiction Days and Endless Story. These 2 songs were both used as a concert closer multiple times but you hear their "rhythm section" being featured lot more in the latter. Everyone's unique and talented, why not use it in the band's music?

    To answer the statement at the beginning, the first time I head BAND-MAID was near the beginning, and it was Thrill. Forget whether it was a Babymetal, Wagakki Band, or Rick Rack video I was watching, but UA-cam made the suggestion for me to watch the maids. Heck, it could have been recommended from a Perfume or Kyary Pamyu Pamyu video.
