      I rented a Ford Escape and the controls were identical to the Focus I had at the time. The Focus's lights came on automatically so when I got in the Escape after dark I didn't think about it. After turning onto a dark highway it seemed the lights weren't very bright, so I tried to turn on the high beams... which didn't work because the headlights weren't actually on.

      It's bad enough when auto manufacturers create confusion by having those road lights come on all the time (in any cases because it's required by law; otherwise they wouldn't bother) while other models are fully automatic based on daylight levels, but the idiots who sit inside a machine and haul their butt all over creation without even knowing how their vehicle even works are the absolute worst.
      I feel like people who continue to drive while playing with their stupid cellphone are now past any kind of grace period and should be charged with much more substantial penalties (because they're either oblivious and need a freaking wake-up call, or just don't care, which is worse), and people who drive with their lights off at night -barring some exceptional situation like a fuse just now this second blowing out- should have their license suspended until they pass a more stringent and focused driver's education course (that they pay for of course), than the one they obviously didn't attend or pay attention to before getting their first learner's permit.
      Can't even count how many times those no-light morons either came weaving through traffic or mooched around in the middle lane going 30mph BELOW everybody else.

    3:12 - Speeding, probably. Like a maniac, no. Speed limit is 65 mph, if you're going exactly the speed limit I'd estimate his speed to be 75 mph or slightly less. Roads are flat, traffic is light, visibility is perfect. Against the law, sure, and I'm certainly not criticizing the officer for pulling the silver Ford over - you break the rules, you face the possibility of consequences - but I'd say the driver is more careless than reckless. Someone "speeding like a maniac" would be able to cruise along at 100 mph or better in those conditions (until they caught up to the white Neon with the shopping cart handle on the back).

      With the modern cars that have daylight driving lights, that come on automatically when the car is put into gear and digital instrument panels, the "dash" lights are on. While the daylight driving lights provide enough illumination that some people may think their lights are on they have no tail lights.

    • @dashcamandy2242
      @dashcamandy2242 7 місяців тому +2

      @@jamesduncan578 I can confirm. Most cars made within the past 10 years have either an always-backlit gauge cluster, or a backlit LCD monitor pretending to be a gauge cluster. These will light up when the headlights are off, leading drivers to believe they have "Auto-On" headlights.
      It was bad enough when people would drive only with DRL (daytime running lamps) but would figure it out when it got too dark to read their gauges, now with DRL and backlit gauge clusters there isn't that extra moment of realization. Some dashes now even turn on a little green light to indicate your headlights are on, which is backwards from the previous method of having a "DRL On" lamp when your headlights were off, leading to further confusion between models and years of cars.
      I prefer older cars for many reasons, but having a "dark" gauge cluster when my lights are off is one of the least-important reasons. 😃

But when you're stopped at a traffic light, let's face it, your distraction is of very low probability of causing a dangerous situation. I'm not saying that the law should be revoked, I'm only commenting that in the 15 minutes or so that the cop probably took to write this lady a ticket, surely there were any number of much more consequential violations on that street that the cop could have ticketed instead.
