When in Arcot, Northeastern Tamil Nadu, those in the know make a beeline for Chettiyar Mittai Kadai, home of the legendary makkan peda that was first made here nearly two centuries ago by Govindasamy Chettiyar, inspired by a mithai that he tasted in the palace of the Nawab of Arcot. I caught up with his fifth generation, Mr. Sundaram, to find out what goes into the making of this flour and khoa dumpling stuffed with a mixture of 11 dry fruits and nuts, before being fried gently in oil over a wood fire until golden brown and then left to soak in sugar syrup. Hope you enjoy this delectable sweet episode; take care, stay safe and strong. Happy eating!

As a local of Arcot , to see someone coming so far to taste Makkan Beeda feels elated. It deserved much much recognition around the state. Arcot is a heritage site which badly needs government aid .

If a place is known for one dish, in this case makkan peda then that item has to be super tasty. Great stuff. Though the exterior is very much like gulab jamun, the ingredients are totally different. 👍🏽

Thank you so much kripal for covering Arcot famous makan peda... This sweet deserve Pan recognition but don't know why its still struggle to survive... Late 90s I saw a street dedicated to this sweet shop... Slowly the shops were reduced . In those days kannan and jayaram sweet shops were dominated... Hope after this video this sweet will get it's rebirth....

Thank you so much sir for sharing the history of the most famous sweet of Arcot - Makkan peda! 🙂 The food here is a part of the local culture and heritage. I've had the pleasure of eating here from years. Must try! Arcot biryani is another favorite that has a unique taste (again dated back to the time it was ruled by Nawab of Arcot).

With the help of some advocate the owner should get Geographical indicator tag for this product just like Thirupathi laddu and Mysore silk saree. (Its like patenting his product so that there are no imitations of brand name or product and also there is no claim by some one else on this product).

Brings back childhood memories. The next time you travel to Vellore do try out the Gulab Jamuns from Bombay Ananda Bhavan. Made from khova and fried in ghee, they are out of this world. Also on Wednesdays, they make a special sweet called Angoor Boondhi, the taste of which is akin to jalebi, but round in shape with sugar syrup inside. And on special request and for larger orders, they make something called as Nukkal, which are nothing but cashews fried in ghee and coated with sugar.
