popular sweet shop in rural bangalore, vijayapura, bengaluru, sri chikkaveeranna sweets, mysore pak, badam halwa, ghee jilebi, pure ghee sweets, traditional mithai, family run, tuppa, ghee red rice avalakki
In 1948, Chikkaveeranna opened a sweetmeat stall in Vijayapura, then a sleep hamlet located fifty kilometres from Bengaluru. The stall would travel from village fair to village fair selling mithai and khaara made of pure country ghee. 72 years on, village ghee may no longer be easily available, but Suresh Chikkananjundappa, his grandson, tends to the traditions of his ancestors in the ghee sweets and savouries that he personally prepares with his family and dedicated workers. Their mysore pak is hugely popular, made to a special technique where the gram flour is lightly roasted with some ghee, before finding its way into the paaka or sugar mixture. However, the tuppa jilebi, with the batter fermented overnight in clay pots, the rich badam halwa made with homemade khoa, and a seriously addictive red rice avalakki mixture, all made with pure ghee, are also must-haves when at this tiny sweet shop. Hope you enjoy this episode. Take care, stay safe and happy eating!
Tuppa Jilebi
Made of a batter that is fermented overnight in a clay pot, and fried in pure ghee, the result is a white jilebi that crackles with a sticky bite and unburdens its ghee-laden sweetness with just a tinge of sourness.
Rs. 440 (usd 6) per kilo
9/10
Tuppa Avalakki
Red rice puffed to a crisp in a bath of boiling ghee, comes together with ghee-roasted cashewnuts, curry leaves, Bengal gram and generous sprinkling of spices to make a seriously addictive khaara or mixture.
Rs. 560 (usd 7.7) per kilo
9/10
Mysore Pak
Soft and crumbly, lush with ghee, this is the sort of Mysore Pak that dissolves on the palate with the light lilt of cardamom, when fresh. You can taste the weight of the gram flour, especially in the tiny clumps that have held on to the ghee as the gram flour is lightly roasted before it finds its way into the sugar syrup or paaka. The hero ingredient in this mithai though is the ghee that makes it Sri Chikkaveerana’s most popular mithai for over seven decades.
Rs. 560 (usd 7.7) per kilo
10/10
Bene Murukku
One of the few items here that is made in oil, the murukku though crunchy and flavourful with cumin and carom seeds and the nuttiness of sesame, feels a bit spartan when tasted in the company of the other heavyweights here.
Rs. 280 (usd 3.8) per kilo
8/10
Badam Halwa
Garnished with chironji seeds and slivers of pistachio and almonds, the halwa is rich with the reduced milk solid, ghee and the grainy bite of coarsely ground almonds. Although, the Mysore Pak is traditionally more popular here, the badam halwa comes a close second.
Rs. 640 (usd 8.7) per kilo

I grew up in Bangalore in the '60s and learnt to read write and speak in kannada. After travelling all over the country and staying in many different states, learning their languages and experiencing their communities - I long ago realised through this experience, that all of our dear Kannadigas are the best of the best in our country : honest, humble, hygienic, simple, intelligent, strong, balanced, gentle, hardworking, cultured, and very sweet and charming. I'm grateful we have such people ( and SOME auto rickshaw drivers in Bangalore do NOT represent anyone but themselves), and I love Karnataka rajya and it's fabulous food ! Thank you Kripal sir for your absolutely UNIQUE and unmatched work! 🙏
That sweet master shivkumar is so humble and sweet person 😊 and shop owner is A Ghee Man😎 thanks kripal for this amazing episode 🔥👍
No face mask!
Look at how humble they are, they even revealed the secrets n tips.
Your blogs are a joy to watch. Thank you so much for giving us the best places to visit. Lived in Bangalore for so long and whenever I returned I used to wonder is any place worth a visit but now your blogs leave me short of time.
God bless them.
You cant get that taste if u make that sweet by just knowing their compositions . That is called tradition.
Karnataka
The dedication and passion for making sweet is great and that's unique of them making them special.
I'm in love with Kripal's Kannada accent
The jalebis here are unlike the jalebis you get at North Indian mithai stores. They are a little thicker than those Jalebis.Their boondi and avalakki are fried in ghee.Been coming here for 30 years. And of course their Mysore Pak is fantastic. And it's nice to see the lesser known guys in your blog of course in your inimitable style.
Happy you enjoyed he video, Rajani!
this Rural man & his family have displayed so much of enthusiasm- despite these difficult times the stand rock like to do their business, taking care of his staff & customers before his own self if what business is all about today !!!! my salutations to you Chikkaveeranna sweets

Kripal the moment you take your first bite there's a very appealing and comfortable blush on your face whenever you like something that itself stands testimony to the fact that the eatery is worth a praise
I am glad that Kripal liked my comment. Please plan a visit to the coastal districts of Andhrapradesh you will find a lot of authenticity and uniqueness of the cuisine this area offers

Kripal sir your kannada as sweet as mysore pak.
Thank you very much for your excellent & sweet , sweeter , sweetest 💖 video 👌👌👌👌
Hard to chose who or what is the winner of this episode .
Is it the simple straightforward "natural" behaving owner or is it the "hardworking staff esp the "sweet master"or should we chose the family members with ready smiles or the lovely kids or should we vote for the warm ambience of the place or is it the "ghee glutton "Mysuru Paaka or is it our favorite Kripal at his one of his best performances ?
In the end i settled for the real winner ......It is the viewers who are indeed blessed to get yet another fantastic episode..
kripal is the only one in this can reach state of nirvana in eating mysore pak 😂😉

Wow...that was one yummy and decadent dessert episode. I am already as you said in mysorepak nirvana. Kudos to you for bringing to light small and rural restaurants and shops. Wish to savour the mysorepak, badam halwa and tuppa jalebi. Keep up the good work Sir.
Not fair watching this video when I am thousands of miles away from India!!! Yummm sweets - I will have to check out this sweets shop when I am in India next. I really wish they did not use food colour though.
Ur English mixed with kannada is very sweet..
Yesterday, sept 2022.
Took a detour through the town towards this shop. Purchased Mysore Pak, Avalakki and damrote.
The Mysore Pak is delicious. Was a little firm by the we reached home. Had to Microwave it, and then got to savor and appreciate its flavour.
Dhumrote : This one is flavored with nutmeg which gives it a new twist and differentiates it from the traditional style and flavor that we have become used to.
Avalakki: The Trump card! There's a reason one keeps wanting it more. Fried crisp and flavoured in ghee, it leaves an enticing aftertaste. Never did I expect Avalakki to be this delicious.
Kripal sir, literally spoke to Mysore paka and had a good conversation with it. 🙏
Vijayapura is lucky sir! Really Mouth Watering just to see the fantastic preparation!
wow that is mouth watering 😊
you are a lucky guy..

I have eaten the Avalakki mixture and the Mysore Paka when i was 10 years old. 2 best quotes in this video "The Mysore pak is asking for more Thuppa." "I am in the state of Mysore Pak Nirvana."
I am currently in the US. The first thing i did after seeing this Vlog was to see if I can order online but could not find. When i come to Bengaluru I will add to my long list of to dos.
