Hello Danni, I am impressed with your knowledge of Orchids and the care of these beautiful plants. I love house plants, but have only had one Orchid, and it was a Dendrobium, and when it bloomed it had amazing purple/pink flowers that lasted about three months.
Keep up the informative videos, you're amazing!

Thankyou for a very helpful video. I was given a present of an Orchid, it was beautiful for quite a while, then the flowers dropped off/died off. I now have the 2 flower stalks and a new leaf has appeared. I shall cut at the base of the flower stalk as you suggested, hoping for another beautiful show of flowers.

    Advice appreciated, pls :)
I adopted my mom’s dying phalaenopsis orchid (neither of us are “plant people”) and decided to try to nurse it back.
I cut off all the dead roots (only 3 were left) and repotted it following MissOrchidGirl’s tutorial. The flower spike was dried and had no flowers but a little leaf was growing from the top, which is why I decided to save it. I had no idea that orchids don’t grow leaves at the top and that it was actually a keiki. I’ve been watering it weekly and keeping a humidifier on. The keiki grew 3 small leaves, 2 small roots & a bud that just bloomed, and the mom orchid has 2 small new roots that I can see outside the soil.
I had cut off it’s dried spike an inch above the keiki (the spike is 10 in. from the base).
The orchid’s 3 large leaves are kinda wrinkly and 2 have black edges. But it is growing 2 new leaves in the middle .
Do you think my orchid will make it?

Hi OrchidGirl. I wanted to try my luck with orchids so here's where I started.
I bought 2 Phalaenopsis Orchids from grocery stores. They seem healthy to me except one was in a tiny container, with water logged sphagnum moss, so I re-potted in clay pot with bark chunks.
The 3rd Orchid, was recently given to me, to try to revive. Unfortunately it was moved from one house to another ( - 15 degrees Celsius weather!) while in full bloom and the blooms all died.
The 2 bloom spikes were green but I cut them back to the base, with a sterilized razor blade.
I also re-potted it and noticed much of the root system has become crinkly roots, that seem dead/dried out. Although there are a couple of possible live roots remaining. I trimmed back the dead roots with scissors.
I have watered the 3 containers (15 minute container bath).
    (1) Is there anything else you'd suggest I try, to revive the Orchid that experienced a cold shock?
    (2) How often would you recommend fertilizing these plants? I live in a climate with 4 seasons, so we do experience much colder temps/shorter days, if that matters for fertilizing.
    (3) Do you ever spritz your plants with a water bottle, or not necessary?
    thanks,
    Jason

Yay! Thanks I was wondering what to do with my Orchid, but it's still blooming. However, it did get an off-shoot veering to the left of the other spike which recently started blooming again so I have nothing to cut right now, but I feel like the spike off to the right is going to get too long at some point.

I currently have two phals in bloom, one a deep rich pink and the other a harlequin with a white base with maroon/purple splotches. I usually cut them back after flowering to let the plant "revive" after the effort of flowering.

    Hi, Love your video!
I am a new owner of a Phal that I inherited from my mom who passed away this summer. She knew all about caring for them and I have been studying up to ensure that I keep this one going as long as I can. My question is this: my orchid has a longer and older bloom spike with new flowers opening at the end of the spike which I look forward to seeing! Today, I just noticed a new bloom spike starting at the base as well as two new leaves coming out from the middle and an epiphyte root comiong out the other side of the base! This seems like a lot of activity all at once. I have not fertilized it, just repotted it two months ago in orchid mix. Is it OK to have two bloom spikes at once? Or should I cut off one to allow the plant to "focus" on all the other growth? Thanks!

Great teaching too video. The orchid I bought for my wife bloomed again less than a year later. Just as you mentioned in this video, it sent out additional blooms after a long delay. Furthermore ,a little after that happening, it sent out a side flower spike. I thought both events were unusual but your video taught me otherwise. I do not know if the reason for the additional blooming was to due to 2 things that I might have done. One was to re-pot the orchid in New Zealand Pinus radiata bark(Orchiata NZ Premium Orchid bark). The other thing I did was to fertilize it bimonthly with Orchid Focus Grow fertilizer. I did both things a month or so after the blooms on the initial flower spike started to open. I do not know if this was purely coincidental or was attributable somewhat to those 2 things I did.
Again your videos are a wealth of golden knowledge on the care, growth and propagation of orchids. I appreciate the wisdom you have gained from your experience with orchids and I thank you for sharing that practical knowledge.

***** Hi, the treatment might have contributed but the genetics of the orchid had the final word. With my orchids that pretty much receive the same treatment I get mixed results, ofcourse the better the care the more chances to get secondary spikes and multiple blooms, but the genetics must permit it as well :) in any case what's important is that the orchid is healthy and makes your day better ;)

***** MissOrchidGirl is a great source of information. I've seen advice about cutting inflorescences and some say don't encourage re-blooming in small plants with few leaves, some say cut at a node to encourage re-blooming, some say cut close to the base of the spike. My "phals" love what I do even though it's not ideal for them. I moved them from California to Oregon (some plants I had to give away but those I brought with me traveled in the Jeep), I have them in direct sunlight although I do adjust the blinds, they're exposed to A/C all summer, I water spray the air roots 2-3 times week and place 2 ice cubes per plant in the pots once every 10-14 days (or I may mimic the pattern of rainshowers here), I feed them year round with a plant spike and in return they bloom 2-3 times a year with beautiful, large blossoms. Be sure to wipe dust from the leaves with a damp cloth and, from time to time, use a little mayonnaise to polish the leaves. Another great source of information is Ryan Levesque, "The Orchid Guy" at orchidsmadeeasy.com At this site, you'll see a question I asked Ryan and the answer he gave me. Btw, if you plan to cut a spike 1cm above the node that's below the lowest bloom, go by what Danni (sp?) says, not by where she put her finger. 1cm is 0.39 inches. She can't be exact with her finger placement and she doesn't have to be, so be sure to measure with a small metric ruler, or print out a metric measure from an online source. When your blooms start to go, you can cut the spike and vase the blooms. They look quite lovely in clear glass vases -- square, rectangular, oval, or round -- with 2 or 3 inches of glass pebbles or marbles, or black river rocks at the bottom. Water should not go above the top of the pebbles/marbles/rocks.

My phalaenopsis orchid lost its flowers a few weeks ago, but the leaves are still very healthy. I've noticed that the the nodes are going dry/yellow about a third of the way down the spike. Should I cut the spike at the top of the last green node, before the nodes turn yellow? It also seems as though there are new flower spikes growing at the top, above the yellow nodes. I want to do what is best for the plant in order to get new, beautiful blooms!
    Great, informative video!

Hello Ms. Danni, thank you for such helpful videos. Your tip on immersing paleonopsis orchids in wayer to water them is spot on, I live in the Philippines and this summer was just sweltering. Do I apply fertilizer in the same way? Immerse the whole pot in fertilizer water? How much time should it be immersed? Also, I would like to propagate my paleonopsis into several plants, I saw a video where they used stem cuttings wrapped in moss to propagate orchids. Do you have a video on how to correctly propagate orchids? Best regards, Lynette

Hi! Thank you very much for posting all of this wonderful information! I have a question that came up while watching this vid of yours; the question I have occurs about 1min and 10 seconds into this video.
*1: My question is: The Phalaenopsis orchid I bought from the grocery store looks like it had a flower spike and then grew a new spike with seven blooms. When I bought it, it was only the first spike and the blooms had fallen and then it grew more on that same branch(spike?) and made the seven blooms and they have now fallen. I did sit back and enjoy them while they were in bloom but now the blooms have fallen and I do not know where to cut the stem. Would you please let me know what to do in this case?
-Also, there is an entirely separate stem that doesn't have any blooms.
*2: Second Plant question: I bought a second orchid and that one has two stems that did not grow or bloom but did get little leaves growing out of the top of the leaves already there (both orchid plants grew the new leaves like that and both have roots growing out of their sides and are not in the soil). I cut the second orchids spikes one cm above the first spike area on both of its branches.
-But it's the one that grew further (the one I am describing at the beginning of this comment= *1) spike out of the same stem that had blooms and the new length of that spike then grew seven orchids that have now fallen...and I'm wondering where to cut that stalk, please? do I cut it in its middle? Or, where, please?
Thank you and I am sorry if you have answered this and I've missed it.

Hi! I followed your tip by cutting down the stem and I am happy. It grew a large amount of new roots it went from brown to a healthy silvery green. It also grew a flower spike and it bloomed maybe 3 weeks ago but now the petals are closing up. There another stem growing between two flowers as well but I don't see why it's closing up so soon? I do live in New York and the weather fluctuate a lot and the air is dry. But I do keep it humid as well I know it's a lot but I don't know which of the Video applies and after many month of care I don't want to fail it. And again the roots are striving and no repotting needed. Any help is appreciated.

Hi Dani, thanks for all the wonderful information. I have a very small orchid that has produced three keikis, two of which are in bloom. All the keikis have several roots but the mother doesn't have many viable roots and needs to be repotted. I have been waiting to separate the keikis and repot the mother until after the keikis have fully bloomed. I was also considering removing the one keiki that is not yet blooming, since that would be less of an energy drain on the mother. After watching this video, it seems that it may be better for the mother to separate all the keikis now, however. What would you recommend?

Hi Dani, i cut the flower spike of my orchid approx 6-9 months ago. The Phalaenopsis as far as i can tell is quite healthy, leaves are nice and green and not sagging. The orchid is also potted in bark, and gets plenty of filtered light (in my opinon at least) My question is, approx how long does it take for another flower spike to grow? Thanks, I look forward to your reply

Hi! One question: some nodes from the bloom spikes get their membrane dried and brownish instead of usual green. I never noticed if these have the chance to create a secondary spike or not. Do you know? Can be possible the orchid to create a new bloom spike from under a little dried membrane instead or a green one? (I hope you understand what I mean)
    Cheers!

I’m a new phalaenopsis orchid owner. I’ve had mine since February. It was a gift from my husband for my birthday. Since I’ve gotten it, I noticed the roots were rotting so I repotted it into a pot with more holes and with orchid bark. I’ve been trying to water just once a week but I’ve noticed that the roots were grey and the leaves were starting to look leathery and droopy. I also noticed the spike was dried out so I cut it. I still don’t know if I’m doing things right in regards to watering. I’ve started watering 2x a week. I’m also using spray orchid food once a week. I really don’t want the orchid to die.

Danni I'm still wondering how can you water all this orchids ...??? Do you have like a schedule ?? a weekly water planning ?? All my respect to you

lol Giovanni :) I have a sort of a schedule, in winter it's usually once a week, more frequent for the Miltoniopsis.. in summer it's chaotic lol, Milts might get watered every day or every other day, during coffee time lol.. the Phals go in the shower and get a nice shower in the summer time so that's easy. this method might be risky if you have cold temps and low ventilation though!!! other than that, I spend about an hour or so at coffee time, answering questions and in the meantime I check the girls that I know dry fast and while I soak the vandas I give those a quick water as well :) sooo kind of chaotic but it's relaxing :P

02:08 Is it beneficial to the keiki to remove it's mini flower spike or should this be left on?

I have read that if you cut a spike you ca n put cinnamon on the wound to help it heal. Do you recommend doing this and should you cut the yellow leaves off or let them fall naturally? Thank you for the. Videos they are such a creat learning tool.

If you repot the orchid, do you put all the extra growing roots in the pot or should you leave them hanging out?

Very well done video! I have started collecting orchids this last year and love this amazing plant! My most recent orchid is doing wonderfully and has grown a spike off the original as well as a new spike coming from a new set of leaves, all while the plant has been in bloom. The flowers are just starting to drop and a sticky, almost sap like substance has developed on the ends of the spike around the flowers. Is this normal? None of my other orchids have ever done this.

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  7 років тому

Hi Cindy, yes this is normal it actually is sap :) some orchids produce more, usually when they grow new structures and flower spikes as these get a lot of attention from the orchid. Here is a video I made on the subject ua-cam.com/video/GBULT14qQDc/v-deo.html

I purchased a new Phalaenopsis orchid several months ago. It had 3 blooming spikes and looks very healthy. After about 2 months 1 spike dried up all the way down to the plant and fell off. I waited for the other flowers to dry up (their spikes were healthy looking) and I cut the other 2 spikes back to where the flowers were dead and cut just above the next node. I have seen no growth from that area at all. It"s been over a month. I did not know until I saw your tutitorial today that I should not have cut so close to the node. What should I do? Should I go down to the next node on the stem and try again? How long before I should see some change/growth? Thank you for any help. JoAnn

the more videos i watch from you the more orchids I wanna get :P, btw, I happen to notice that some of your orchids are in transparent pots some are not, I do like the idea that you can see how the roots are growing and moist level and such, do you recommend using transparent containers to all/most common orchids?

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  8 років тому +1

Hi, yes transparent pots can be used with any epiphyte orchid no worries :) at the time I just didn't transplant all of them. I now use clay pots though, but clear plastic pots are great if you want to see the root development :)

H Danni. My phal was left in a room which got cold at night for a couple of nights in a row. I have now moved it to a warmer room. However the previously trimmed flower spike has now turned black at the top and is spreading down. Is this because of cold shock? Should I cut off the spike completely or just cut below the black part? Otherwise the plant is healthy I only have it a few months. Had lovely flowers which dried and fell naturally after a couple of months. Then I cut to above a node. It was green until the cold got to it :(

I'm fairly new to this, after it finished last year I cut it back and a new spike grew and it's bloom finished but it's started again, should I cut it back or keep it going while trimming the dead ends?
Every time I cut a dead end more grows, it's beautiful but am I going wrong?

I have a healthy orchid that dropped its last flower a few months ago. I've left the stems intact. It has produced a new stem that's about half the length of the other stems now. I'm just trying to figure out what to do with the other stems. From this video, I understand I can do either of the options: cut below the last bloom or at the base. You said you prefer to cut at the base after it's done blooming because side blooms are not as nice as blooms from a new stem, right? So, to clarify, you would cut the stem at the base regardless of the orchid's health to allow it to produce more stems and flowers, right?

I have a phalaenopsis orchid, it got root rot and I had to cut almost all the roots off. I'm going to replant it. It has only two leaves and only one of those look healthy. Should I cut off the flower stems? And what kind of medium would you suggest? I'm in Michigan in the USA and I keep the plant indoors. Thanks

Hi, I have my first and only orchid plant given to me as a gift. There are 2 flower spikes and the flowers have died off. The 1 flower spike looks shriveled and dead. The 2 green leaves at the base look to be very healthy. Should I cut off the flower spikes?

I cannot find on any videos about the spikes. I notice some of your orchids are growing straight up with the spike but also I see some of them hanging over the pot. How do you know which is best and when do you let the orchid hang down over the pot?

Hi! So I’m having trouble with my orchid, over winter break I wasn’t able to water it for like 2 weeks and it wasn’t getting much sunlight so when I came back, my orchid leaves were already gone. Now the top of the stem is beginning to brown and dry, everything else is good. The leaves are green and there’s like a new leaf growing too. I haven’t checked the roots, but I guess my question is should I cut the top of the stem where it’s brown and dry or should I cut from near the bottom of the root ? It only has 1 stem, also should I repot it? Help thank you :)
