They were intentionally designed to make kids familiar with weapons as early as possible, thus making it far easier to entice them to enlist in the military. Pretty awful shit if you ask me.

Kids are curious about life, and they find death and pregnancy to be really cool, and companies who want to make money will sell boys toy guns and to girls they sell baby dolls. plus in the wake of ww2, most people had a heroic father, uncle, or grandfather who "beat the nazis/japs" sure its racially incentive to simply those people into that category, but back then it was a lot worse when the Japanese butchered manchuria, or when the nazis exterminated massive populations of central and eastern Europe... but the irony was perhaps lost when considering what the USA did to the natives when they made those 6-shooter, lever-action guns to "win the west"... but that's what Hollywood was making back then, so companies wanted to make a buck (or four) on some dopey kid who wanted to be like roy rogers.

We found sticks that looked like rifles and played with them around the house a car drove by a road 100yrds away and a cop pulled in saying it looked like kids had rifle's. We got grounded and introuble nothing other than us getting our ass whooped by our dad but still I doubt toys like this would be terrible for kids

I was just out of suburbia, so it probably was already gone in the cities and suburbs, but sometime around 2007 either it all suddenly felt less "real" or the stuff they were putting in stores really did change. my friends and I all ww2-gulf war-style action figures, and wed have gay little war scenarios with them at each others houses, and then a rule was broken somewhere because then it wasnt just moms who were against it, a few dads started getting anti-gun toys. A few guys weren't allowed to hang out with kids whos parents let them play with gun toys, and at first they said it was bullying because the kids felt left out but that fell through because if a guy had a second gun, hed always loan his least favorite to the guy who had none. Wed run through the woods shooting at each other, and it was amazing to see the ages of toy guns coming together: rambo machine guns dollar store "cowboy" pistols, airsoft M16s, plastic tommy guns and that one asshole who brought his older brothers paintball grenade... its stupid nostalgia talking, and i don't think its just "i got too old to stop playing" that makes me think it went away, we stopped when we were still young enough, its just parents were trying to guilt each other or cause trouble to seem morally superior. It didnt matter if their sheltered kid gets popcorn lung by age 16, after years of being forced on ritalin, as long as he wasnt the good guy in his own cowboy/army fantasy story. funny enough i always enjoyed playing the villain, and i was really on point with the props. when we played "swat" i was always the drug lord with a baggy of sugar, or in mafia games id play the dumb goon or the crooked cop.... how fucking gay. I was too old however around 2012, when hunger games came out, and i think that was the death knell of kids playing war. a few companies tried to get girls involved in the fun of "playing war" while boosting their egos to think they were invincible. Im sure a couple girls running around with fake bows got pelted with a stick "grenade" and cried to their parents were already pressured to shut everything down. by 2015 any younger relatives or family friends had toys of things that lacked any reference to firearms, and if they came over they were alarmed to see a real metal capgun 6-shooter that i had when i was younger than they were. its as if it was a real gun.
