  • www.footankle.com/other-foot-p... You may hear a lot about a the over-pronated foot - also known as a flat foot. But there is much less discussed and much less research about the “over-supinated” foot. This is usually a foot that has a higher than average arch and it is a much less common problem than the “over-pronated foot”, but there are some very specific problems that are associated with having a foot that supinates too much. Those problems in include ankle sprains, pain under the ball of the foot, pain in the heel and hammertoes. Seattle podiatrist Dr. Larry Huppin is an expert in foot biomechanics and in this video will explain what supinated feet are, what problems it causes and how to both prevent and treat those problems.
    If you are in the Seattle area appointments can be made from our website at www.footankle.com/.

    I went to see a podiatrist almost 20 years ago and she assessed my feet and got me into orthotics, which did cost a bit but now have doubled in price.... I do rockjumping and trekking as sport and require certain types of 5mm < drop sneakers.... over the past 4 or 5 years I have been developing knee pain and have seen several podiatrist and also been to physiotherapy a couple of times which the physio seems to help a little bit, but is hard to maintain. But what I have been finding, through my own observation, that as sneakers have been advancing and the technology improving in terms of midsole foam, in order to get them more responsive and yet a little softer, such as Skechers Hyperburst, or Asics Flighfoam and Flighfoam plus, and Hoka's Profly foams, and similar phone's like Nike react and Adidas ultraboost, the bulk at the back of the orthotics, which is meant to straighten your foot and keep it up, actually forces down into the mid sole foam causing creasing in the inner heel, crushing the foam down digging into it, and not only prematurely wearing it out in 1 to 2 months, and destroying these very expensive shoes, but then causing you to overpronate at the heel putting a lot of strain on your knee.... and this makes the overpronation much more worse and unnatural..... I'm trying to do away with the orthotics now bit-by-bit, because it is very hard to stop using them particularly after so long and needs to be a gradual process..... but I must say my knee is already feeling better..... podiatrist do not tell you of these things can expect you to accommodate the orthotics to buy very firm shoes which maker running and sports like mine impossible..... on top of that, my particular podiatrist will not admit that the orthotics are doing this, when it is plain to see..... my recommendation is as much as it is possible to stay away for orthotics because as the guy in this video says they are only a crutch and if you want to own and run in high-end sneakers, it will not be possible..... I will give these exercises ago now as well as I continue to transition off my orthotics..... but if there is no pain and you can still walk and run and do other exercises without orthotics and you do some what overpronate, I would not necessarily rush out there and try to fix it with orthotics..... although my podiatrist is very stubborn, my physiotherapist said he does not usually recommend orthotics but rather shoes that very lightly correct overpronation f it is causing pain or a problem; but if it isn't, is it really necessary to fix it.......

      I appreciate your keen obsevation here. I have SI joint pain on the left side which I think goes back to when I was very young, around age 6. I distinctly remember I would get a very stiff lower back from rollerblading at age 9-10. I think it was due to the boot not having good support for my foot and restricting the ability to pronate/supinate naturally and I think my lower back muscles would be forced to overwork to keep me balanced to the point they would start to lock up and make it really difficult to complete the motion of bending forward to un-strap the skates without sitting down. I'm 40 now and I have been getting some pretty bad pain from the SI joint up to my neck on the left side the last few years. I basically just figured this all out over the last year because my doctor was almost no help at all. The best thing she did was send me to PT 3 years ago when I went in due to an episode of heavy chronic pain from a new job I started.
      All this to say that I was going to look into orthotics but your experience matches a similar observation I made using cheapo inserts in some boots I had. They ended up making me wobbly. I got some 0 drop barefoot style shoes called Lems that have helped me out a lot but I still have chronic pain with increasingly occurring flare ups of really severe pain that can radiate all the way up my spine to my neck and make my quality of life horrible. I want to try and manage it myself with a natural approach and avoid invasive stuff unless at some point it becomes unbearable.
      Thanks again for your perspective, it actually inspired several points to think on that will hopefully lead to better health for me. Good luck to you.

      @@metacortexvortex2131 thanks for sharing. These situations can be so tricky to work out, even for the professionals. I was in beautiful Malta about 3 weeks ago and my friend there is a medical podiatrist which is a little bit different to the podiatrist that we have here in Australia because over there podiatrists go through similar training to foot specialists, and they can even perform surgeries on your feet in hospital. Long story short he wanted to have a look at my feed for me free of course and he diagnosed me with something completely different. Yes I over pronate somewhat but it is due to what he called flat feet on weight bearing..... so I have a very well defined arch upon looking at my feet but then as I walk it tends to flatten out..... he recommended I try some mild stability shoes but without a very high stack height because a high stack height tends to increase your overpronation.... I haven't bought any yet because I still have a few pair of other sneakers but I'll give it a try when I need new shoes. Perhaps it is also something you might want to give a go. Good luck to you also and may God bless you and me we also remember to offer up our crosses and unite them to the sufferings of Christ because then they become salvific and assist in the Salvation of Souls..... it is what our mother Mary did at the foot of the cross with the terrible sufferings she experienced watching Her Divine Son suffer and die for our sins and sinfulness.. Jesus asked us to do the same thing in a very awesome book called divine mercy in my soul, written by a mystic who had loquacious and visions of Jesus named sister Faustina. Miracles were attributed to her intercession particularly one to a American woman named Maureen Diagon who had lymphedema. Her book, which is a diary of her interactions with Jesus, is awesome. I do that with all of my little sufferings and crosses in life. Tahe care.. . God bless you and your loved ones 🙏 😇

    Could this be a problem from imbalanced hip adductors/abductors? Because when i activate my adductors, slightly twisting my legs inwards my feet naturally go from supination to neutral.

    • @StephenPribut
      @StephenPribut 7 років тому

      Rotating the leg from a neutral position and twisting it inward will result in pronation of the foot. Rotating it externally will result in supination. The foot primarily translates that rotation about the subtalar joint to the ground. If you can imagine winding up and swinging a golf club or a baseball bat - on the back swing - your back most foot will supinate. As you swing - your backlist foot will pronate.
      What Dr. Huppin is discussing is a structural problem of the foot (Pes Cavus) and not a muscular imbalance, although the muscles can impact the forces generated through the foot.

      Yeah I think the proclivity to try fix the problem at the foot by inserting soles is classic in our society where there is hardly any ever a holistic approach towards health.

    What kind of shoes should I wear (I supinate)? I wear an insole that supports my high arch, which works well to limit the excessive movement of my foot (supinating and pronating), but this insole only works on my old Brooks Ravenna 11s, which has guiderails. These are the only shoes I ever worn that haven’t worn out on the outer heel. I’ve tried the new Brooks Launch GTS (which replaced Ravenna), didn’t work. I tried the same Ravenna but a size that better matches the insole (the old ones I have are a size bigger, so the insole sometimes slips), didn’t work. I tried more neutral Brooks Dyad 11, ASICS GT 2000 10, nothing works. I have to go back to my old shoes, which aren’t gonna last forever. I donated some shoes to charity, I’ll return some others, but I really need to know a shoe I can wear, since otherwise my whole body goes into misalignment and then I have back pain and piriformis syndrome within days. It’s extremely frustrating.

      Your best bet would be to talk to a podiatrist who specializes in orthotic therapy or a really good pedorthist in a specialty shoe store. You need someone who can look at your feet and make specific recommendations.

    After a short while, before soles begin to wear, the front and outside of my feet tend to overlap the soles of my shoes. The foot doctor told me I needed a lateral flare and where I could have this done. I have great hopes. My question is; will this extra thickness added by the shoe expert, also prevent my toes from jamming against the end of my shoes? This takes about 30mins to an hours walk to happen. I also have neuropathy and, need compression socks. My mind says, no matter what, it can be fixed. (if I tighten my shoes like a normal person, when my feet swell, they are too tight).

    • @Footankle
      @Footankle  7 років тому

      It's hard to give you a good answer without examining your feet, but given the information I have the lateral flare seems logical. To stop the foot from lengthening in your shoes (and having your toes hit the front of the shoe) use a good arch support to limit flattening and lengthening of the foot. Some suggestion on arch supports can be found here: www.footankle.com/orthotics/off-the-shelf/

    What is the biomechanic cause? I only have this problem in the right foot and don't want to wear any orthotic inlays (or shoes for that mater). I'd prefer some corrective exercises.
    I don't have any bone pains, but the outer sole and the small toe rubs too much and gets irritated. There also seems to be side effects in the entire leg, with muscles on the inner side of the thigh getting "stuck" and "unstuck" (weird, although not painful, sensations of sliding or release) and the area above the outer knee getting slightly achy sometimes. My left leg doesn't experience any discomfort.

      A podiatrist with expertise in orthotic therapy (not all podiatrists have this expertise) will be able to prescribe a pair of orthotics to address both issues. Much like having different eyeglass lens prescriptions for both eyes.

      @Butch Pedit All I can say is that for cycling, where I apply power for two to 6 hours on the pedals, a strong arch support that does not flex is what helps distribute the force application so that the outsides of my feet don't hurt. I now use arch supports - despite what this doctor was taught in medical school - for flat feet, and it helps a lot. Just never buy cheap arch supports.

      This is my experience. I'm VERY flat footed and have to wear arch support inserts in my shoes (due to repeated injuries causing chronic inflammation), but I've also had a supinated gait about as long as I can remember.
      Now, after a bit of reading, I've found that the likely cause for my frequent accidental self-injury is supination.
      So, do I forgo arch support in favor of supination orthotics? Do I add heel supports to my arch support? If I went with the latter, I'd probably have to replace all my shoes because I size by what I need with my inserts.

      It's possible the use of proper orthotics could slightly slow the wearing down of the outside sole of the shoe. It won't be dramatic, however The main purpose of the orthotics is to reduce the forces that cause pain. They don't significantly change the landing position of the foot

      unfortunately there is no one best shoe. A quote by one of most respected shoe experts is that "different shoes work differently on different people". Essentially there simply is no way to recommend a specific shoe. You need to find a shoe store with experienced shoe fitters who can help you find the right shoe. If you are still having issues you should see a sports medicine podiatrist to see if there is something else going on that is preventing you from finding a comfortable shoe.

    I'm curious why there is no mention of fixing the arch's with minimalist or barefoot shoes? The problems with our feet often come from an inactive lifestyle and the coddling of our feet through shoes that restrict full range of motion and offer too much support. Isn't recommending inserts just a Band-Aid fix instead of getting to the root problem? No disrespect but isn't this similar to a psychiatrist who recommends drugs to fix depression instead recommending a healthier way of thinking?
