  • Unboxing and checking out my RyanSword naginata. Not many places offer a naginata, so I had to check this one out. Purchased by me, not sponsored in any way. Targets are water bottles, two liter soda bottles, and some thin bamboo (approx 1/4" to 3/8").

I've reached out to RyanSword to ask for a refund or store credit. Also inquired if I should be concerned about the heat treatment on the two swords that I got from them.

Well better on a refund on this one, just watch Byrd's review of his second naginata, which broke and almost fell on his skull, Jesus!

Yes, he sent me pics when it happened. Lucky he didn't hurt himself. Haft shouldn't fail like that.
RyanSword offered me a refund or a different sword of same price as a replacement. They also said the blade geometry was changed in Dec 2021 due to customer complaints about it not being sharp and is now designated as a "light cutter". That's not on the site though. Gonna look over their site and decide which route to take.

Steel should not take damage from grass. Hope they take care of you.

Nice review for showing honest cutting footage. Definitely saved me 200 bucks on this one. What the hand-and-a-half sword you cut with in this video?

Thanks! It's an Arms & Armor Bannockburn. Was torn between that and an Albion Principe. It's the only one A&A ever made (at least when I bought it in 2015). Picked it up at their vendor booth at an event, I got to handle it before buying.

@@SamuraiJames An excellent sword! Not one of their standard models, right?

Thank you. And correct, they made it as a one-off, never offered as a standard model.

I might be salvaging this one. StoneBuiltKnives annealed and tempered the blade for me, which got it to a proper hardness according to the file method test. I still have to clean off the forge residue, give it back to him for hardening, and make a haft for it, so I might have an update video out around the fall. I've heard other people have luck with this one, but I didn't, and Samurai Byrd didn't (twice). The hanwei has a much better looking haft right out of the box though it is considerably more expensive too.

I hope this goes better than either of Byrds. Lol

Unacceptable! Should've lasered right through that skewer with no damage at all.

Yep for sure. That bamboo is some thin stuff from home depot for tomato plants that I bought to use for a sashimono (banner) pole set but it was so flimsy I couldn't even do that. About 1/4" to 3/8" thick it's not a difficult target but it was a good test of blade quality apparently. Don't have tatami and wanted something more than water bottles. Still gotta look into pool noodles, happened to have the bamboo laying around.

@Samurai James just shaking my head at the amount of edge damage from such a gimme of a target. Heat treat guy had to have been hammered that day or something. That's 3 now that have been complete trash. Had my eye on the one naginata style unokubi zukuri katana they offer, but after yours and Byrds videos, I'll be taking my money elsewhete....

Great video, bad product. Hopefully ryansword will take this off the market and back to the drawing board. They should’ve done more test. Thanks for pouring one out for my Nagi,LOL

Yeah they need to get the quality back under control on these. We're 0 for 3 and I haven't seen any other reviews of them lately. We can't be the only two people who bought these recently. Mistakes happen, I'm glad they tried to make up for it by sending a second one and then a refund.

China basically blocks returning packages. You can send it back but they get "lost". Best I can hope for is a partial or full refund.
