Hey, Indian classical singer here. What makes this performance really really impressive is that this is live. She's making decisions by the moment. There is so much improv involved. It's absolutely insane in the best way possible. Glad you like it!
The instrument she’s playing (on her lap) is called Swaramandal. It is very easy to go off scale for Indian classical singers because they sing the notes very fast. And this instrument helps the singers to stay on scale. They tune the instrument according to the melodic scale also know as Raagam or Raag and when they play it, the sound coming out from the instrument will help singers to not go off scale. When the sound of the instrument doesn’t match with the singing, they will know that they are not on scale and they’ll correct it.
In ancient India there was a legendary singer who mastered all "raag" So perfectly if he sings raag deepak then everyone start to feel fire burning in body because his voice became so powerful that he can do magical things by his voice. When he sang raag megha malhar the rain start. The legend was Tansen.

(it's decided once they discuss on stage a few minutes earlier they perform.)*
You two witnessed a master. There are masters in every field. This is a master. Tier A. Seal Team Six level. haha Malcolm Gladwell in his book Outliers talks about how it takes a minimum of 10,000 hours of practice to become world-class at something. If you listen to Kaushiki's interviews, it becomes clear that she spent more than that amount of time on riyaaz(vocal practice)
Indian music needs a lot of "flexibility" in one's voice. It's agility but also the power that she displays in her notes is incredible and needs a lot of strength and breath work.
It is also the "math". The math of staying within that bar (aavartan as we call it) , creating the notes as she goes and yet staying within the confines of the raaga is what take tremendous practice and repetition. The natural ability is the voice, her range maybe but the math takes some working on.
This is Indian classical hindustani genre presentation... You would be mind blown by different ragas and in different taal they present i.e tempo with the percussion accompany them... Indian classical hindustani or Carnatic genre are meant to be dynamic and creative... They don't prepare ahead...it just on the stage and on spot created music just like that then and there.... Basically it's natural music presented by the taste and flavour every artist had in their soul n mind

*THE FACT!* : IN one of her interviews, she said that sometimes (most of the times) she would go to multiple concerts at a day and (THE MIND BLOWING FACT that) most of the times, *THEY DON'T REHERSAL OR KNOW WHAT THEY ARE ABOUT TO PERFORM.
One really can't explore Indian culture . It's really incredible and diverse.
Thank you so much for doing this reaction Justin....if you want to listen more Indian Classical music you can always search it on the same channel Darbar Festival.
Indian classical is always classic 🙏 i am proud of my country and its beautiful culture ❤️🇮🇳🇮🇳 my India my culture 🇮🇳❤️
Kowshiki was a child prodigy who leart music at her musician Father's feet way before most kids can say Mama ! This is Indian classical music and there are many in India singing like her .
On an average, 20-30 years of training and practice! Apart from the nuances of introduction and main theme, the extent of the later interpretations of a musical presentation are pure spontaneous interpretation..with an endless repertoire of content and style. Precious..to say the least. The magic of Indian classical music.
Proud to be a Bengali

Bro Indian Classical Music is not so easy to learn...it is not only about technique, it requires a lot of time...because practice will make your vocal chords physically flexible...to glide smoothly from one note to another
To reach this level of excellence it takes of 25 years of experience with 10 hours a day practicing and trying your voice. This is called Indian real classical music
Indian classical is on another level...#she is saraswati...you just kneel down front of her
This is the music of India, developed over years by musician from every part of India, from North to south, east to west, north east. Every part
Thank you for knowing raga and swaras!
I can recommend to reacted to Aigiri Nandi
My singing teacher told me "You're singing for yourself, and it was a way to tell me to focus on "having fun" meanwhile singing for an audience". The incredible raga singer is the perfect example for that.
