  • Hi there everyone! This song was suggested by Lungfull drummer!
Dave mostly comments on how great the drummer is throughout this. I thought maybe cartoon hearts were going to come out of Dave's eyes at some points.
Dave's not a fan of the "cookie monster" style of singing in some parts of this though!
Thanks for introducing us to Blake Richardson, Lungfull!

Cheers for checking out my request. I thought Dave would enjoy Blake's playing. Hopefully some other folks suggest some more btbam down the road.

Well this was unexpected, but I am here for it! Hoping Dave falls down the BTBAM rabbit hole!

I would react to some of the more modern BTBAM. There is a lot more singing on their newer stuff

It's funny every member of BTBAM is an elite musician but when I saw the thumbnail "I need to know who he is" I and everyone else probably knew he was talking about Blake... dudes just on another level, legitimately one of the best drummers to ever live

"How did this style of vocals become a thing?"
Because there are no rules in music and you can do whatever you want! ;) But a slightly more serious answer would be that this band is like the epitome of a maximalist approach to music creation. Tommy's vocals refer to much of the body of "recent" (read: last 4-5 decades) hard rock and heavy metal music. He does it all - prog rock, punk, death metal, black metal, thrash, grunge, rock opera, hair metal, etc.. You name it, Tommy can do it. This is how the band operates as a whole, and the result is a catastrophic whirlwind of influence that still somehow ends up not only cohesive but incredibly meaningful.
But yeah, to bring it back around to my first statement, you can trace a line to Tommy pretty cleanly from Mr Bungle's Mike Patton who was huge on the idea of pushing music forward by entirely dismissing "normal" stylistic boundaries.

Maybe check out The Ectopic Stroll or Turn On the Darkness from their album Coma Ecliptic, more clean vocal proportion on that album. Or Bad Habits from Colors II. Or The Proverbial Bellow from Automata.
Their albums are generally concept albums that flow from front to back. Their compositions are so good you'll get used to the harsher vocals in no time.
Drummer is Blake Richardson and he's one of the best. The entire band writes the music which is why it's got so much density and diversity throughout the track.
The Parallax II: Future Sequence (which this song is from) was voted r/progmetal's album of the decade for the '10s.

They have had the same lineup since 2005, the past members were their early years.
Disappointed in your "cookie monster" comments, hopefully you can grow out of that haha

Dave really needs to see a drum playthrough from Alex Rudinger. Pretty much any of them would do, but "Xenochrist" is one that comes to mind.

Totally some Mr Bungle vibes in places. I wish there were more Mr Bungle vocals too. The cleans were pretty good but the scream tone didn’t grab me at all. Curious to listen to more if the singing out-weighs the growls/screams. I admit to being a vocal snob. 🙈😅

You should give the song"Fix the Error" from "between the buried and me's" latest album "Colors II" a listen (colors II is a musical masterpiece according to me and a great listening journey) . There's a crazy drum solo in the song.
Anyhow, great reaction video!! Hope you'll react to more BTBAM.

Vocal Polyps be damned. I think it's safe to assume this band's vocalist won't be pulling a Mark tremonti anytime soon (SInatra themed album in theJekyl-Hyde vocal stylings). Wish the singer had stuck to more of the clean vocals but really liked the instrumentation on this one. Here's a cut for Dave to check that's hard edged but still with melodic vocals from the band Evergrey, Its the tune, "Weightless" ua-cam.com/video/kBne5lE66u0/v-deo.html

Musically very interesting! The grunting is just not my thing and ruins it for me. Would rather hear him sing more than grunt, but that’s just personal.
If he does that on every track than I’m definitely not gonna add this to any Spotify list 😉
Great technical band and great review !!

You’re missing out on one of the most powerful bands of the past 3 decades if you can’t get past the vocals. Give yourself a good 3 years of harsher vocals with other types of music and come back to this. It’s takes acclimation but once you’re there, there is no other way.

@@ryanbennett1532 😅 yes i totally understand .. have been trying grunting for over a decade and it is just not my cup of tea. I like many styles from indie to progressive to punk and metal .. but voices are always a sensitive topic. For instance I like the Rammstein music but I just hate the guys voice, so won’t listen to it 😅
