I know this video is 5 years old. But, I have the exact same bike. I'm the second owner. Bought it back in '87 or '88. Only difference is mine has cast wheels
Bought the twin to this bike in '88. 1980 XLH .Black with gold bar and shield. Only difference is mine has the original mags on it. When I bought it still had original Goodyear Eagles on it. Still have it. Been sitting a few years gonna get it running next spring
At the moment I'm putting my '77 FXE back on the road with hopes of going through the sportster this summer. If I give up on it I definitely will keep you in mind
I own the very same bike and at 40 years old she still runs great it’s never had the top end pulled apart and I have no clue how many miles it’s got but it don’t smoke or burn oil. It’s been turned into a custom bobber and a wide glide front end it rides very nice. It got points not the electronic ignition and an old ford voltage regulator. The electronic crap just don’t last. I’m old school and I like my old sporty bar hopper. S&S carb shotgun pipes and drag bars. The 4 speed trans is not built for highway speeds but for an around bike it’s fast and responsive. The 1.6 gallon tank looks great but your not going farther than 60 miles on a fill up.
I love your videos and your work ethic,I have purchased an 02 1200 sporty and look forward to making it my own.Do you do rebuild exchanges of carbs or am I better off going to a catalogue? I would gladly spend my time and money to support your business if that’s something you do.
Hi I’m restoring same model year 80 XLH , could u tell me where to buy oryginal tank decals ??? Thanx in advance and love your bike !!! Can’t wait to finish mine !
I have a 1980 XLS 1000 and only things wrong with it are the signals don’t light up, and the brake light doesn’t get bright when hitting the brakes. No clue where to begin to fix these issues. Any advice?
With the both check for good bulbs first... the signals either bad wiring connection, switch or flasher relay. With the rear brake light again possibily just a bad bulb being one of the 2 elements may be burned so it lights up but not when the brakes applied. If the bulb checks out alright check the brake light switch from the pedal.
Ham Can air cleaner dude! Well..maybe thats just southern slang. If i was you I would get ride of rebranded Honda carb. It was originally designed for 2 cycle engine on snowmobile. Seriously..those things will leave you by the roadside if you use it long enough.

My First Harley was a 1980 Sportster, Black just like that. I put a Mikuni VM38 carburetor and XLR Staggered duals. Ran real good.
Bike looks superb Jay. That is the route I'm going on mine, back to stock, getting closer.
Nice Work! That didn’t take long.

Looks good bought a new one at Napoleon Harley Davidson Ohio in 1980 3 thousand out the door.Is it for sale keep up good work in this old Harleys.
Hey thanks, it could be for sale if your interested. Thanks for watching!
The frame was designed in the 1970's with the XLCR so Harley could justify charging more money for the Sportster!

Would you happen to know off hand what brake fluid a 1981 sportster is supposed to use ? Dot 5. ?
Hello, yes Dot 5 is correct. Thanks for watching!
Good job, who the hell left a thumb down.

Good to see one un-molested. Fun to customize also but good to find an original.
