Neighbors Were THRILLED This OVERGROWN Vacant Lot Got Cleaned Up (Satisfying Transformation)

  • An eyesore for the past year, the owner of this vacant lot finally cleared work to be done on it, and I was subcontracted to clean it up for a local lawn care/landscaping company. Running zero turn mowers on this property would have probably required a double cut at several heights, and may have also risked damage to the machines with the hidden sticks/branches in the tall grass.
The job started by clearing the curb/gutter of debris, and with a year's worth of dirt collected, there was plenty of space for grass to grow. A simple flat shovel provided the best way to clean this up, and a pile was formed at the street for free local city pickup.
After clearing the curb of tall grass and dirt, I began edging the sidewalk with a TORO 60 volt power base and straight shaft edger attachment. An edger is a machine that spins a rectangular blade to cut vertically through grass and dirt where it meets concrete to create a defined line or edge. It is safer to edge with an edger rather than a string trimmer as debris management is worlds better with an edger, which always has a robust guard, where edging with a string trimmer usually means you remove the guard and potentially throw debris very far.
After edging, raking and blowing the final debris meant a clean curb and read to mow. I used the Ventrac 4520P compact tractor with the Tough Cut HQ682 attachment out front. This is a brush cutter that uses three large blades to cut debris up to 1" (that is the manual says, but it will physically cut much more than that). While tall grass is not the main use for this attachment cutter deck, it does a very fine job and knocking the growth down. If you wanted a manicured finish you should follow up with a finish mower deck (but this will add time and expense to the project most folks don't want, especially folks who let it go wild for a year at a time. They just want it knocked down).
String trimming with the same TORO 60 volt power base (just with the string trimmer attachment swapped for the edger) around the trees, fence line, and curb add the finishing touches to the property, and a final blow off which wasn't filmed gets all the debris off the street.
Loading the tractor onto the Stryker deckover heavy equipment trailer was the last thing to do before some after shots of the job and then editing the video came next!

I like the comments onscreen. Enjoying the talk about what steps you are doing. It is nice the Ventrac is so good at this. You don't have to go over and over to get things done, it also cut quite close to the trees, so the trimming was minimized. I thought vines starting up the trees was potentially a problem to remove and you too noticed and got right on that. Under humor, the trailer matches your vest. Good job.

In reference to your comments about battery blowers, they definitely aren’t ready for commercial leaf clearing or anything like that BUT I use the ECHO battery blower commercially for lawn mowing and never use more than 5amps of total power. But I also almost never use the boost feature

    • @CopperCreekCuts

I thought of you specifically when I worded that comment. I knew your setup relied very little on blowers, so framed it compared to backpack blowers. I think most commercial guys wouldn't be able to get by with your setup (or for that matter even the gas blower you used) :P

The only real hitch with electric tools is the batteries themselves. If you have to buy a higher capacity separately, they can be very expensive (not to mention the size and weight grows with capacity). I’d found the smallest batteries fine for regular yard work, but tilling soil or cutting overgrown edges will drain them quickly.
I just realized my EGO tools must by more than 8 years old now, and the batteries are losing some steam, but still serviceable. I’ve certainly gotten my money’s worth out of them.

... this is an awesome piece of equipment! If the owner lived on one of the sides of this overgrown lot, it appears that their immediate property was kept up. I can't imagine letting this lovely lot with the beautiful understory of the pines fall into neglect. It would be gorgeous if it was mowed every week.
I haven't watched your videos in a while - I am a subscriber - and I do like your commentary in words explaining what is going on...for me it is more engaging and it makes me want to continue watching.
All of my trimming is a beveled edge; I have grass median that I trim on all four sides; public sidewalk; driveway; and sidewalks then on my general property. A good cache of charged batteries gets the job done. ...but man, it is a drag by the end of summer! 🥴🏡👩🏼‍🌾💚🌸🌺🌻 =^..^=

Hey Brad - To start with, have you used any battery equipment with a backpack battery? Stihl and Husky make a line like that. They still use 1 power head and a combination system for different attachments, but the power head uses an umbilical that comes off the backpack battery. They still may not run all day on 1 charge. Also, I'm impressed the ventrac will start that mower at idle. My 22.5hp riding mower needs about ⅓ throttle to start its 54" mowing deck. Nice machine you have.
