  • This video documents steps I've taken to fix non-starting Craftsman / Honda GCV160 lawn mower.
I bought this lawn mower for just $25 from the local NextDoor site. Overall this was actually in a very good condition, and the only problem was it was not starting.
A brand new self-propelled Honda engine lawn mower with similar features are around $400. And since I love to research and fix any problems, this made it a perfect purchase for my DIY curiosity.

Awesome video! Thank you. I just bought a similar older used Craftsman with a Honda motor, it works great, fires up first pull! But this will surely help if i ever have troubles with it later

Great. Most of the time, it’s just the dirty carburetor and people give up too easily. Keep me posted on your fix. 😁

How did it work out for you?

Tilt is a good idea. And/or replace bolts with studs and nuts.

Today, I took apart the carb again, and later try to put all the parts with gaskets in between in upright position but it was so frustrating, so I went back my tilt position again. :-)

Worst design ever. Ran into this myself. Absolute bitch to put back on. Considering puttting on stud bolts

What you call the pin is the emulsion tube and it has loads of sideways holes which need to be clear. Mine STUCK STUCK STUCK. WD40, sonic bath, inverted Allen key pivoting on foot of throat won't budge it. Horror.

From your WD40 suggestion, I took apart the carb again and sprayed some penetrating oil and I was able to get that center emulating out. Sure enough, some of those small holes were completely blocked. Thanks for the suggestion!

"foot"?? That was an autocorrection (so called!!) And it should have been 'roof'.

Must use the choke when engine is cold

So you don't need the choke?

It's been a while since I worked on this one, so I had to look at the video again, and looks like this one doesn't have a choke to prime. You just pull back on the release handle and pull the cord to start the engine. I would say 1/2 the small engines have automatic choke (meaning no manual choke) like this one.

Used a different type of oil... like a bad boy! :)
