I don’t know why people are talking about how ‘difficult it is’ or ‘hard to get it right’. The movie is based in the heights with a large Afro-Latino community. It’s very clear and obvious this exclusion, not a slight mistake or not intentional. These are lazy excuses Imo.

Name actors, who are dark skin Latinos, to replace the cast, if it is so easy? As it is, this cast couldn’t sell the movie. It didn’t interest people. So name some actors? And this will be pointless because we won’t see a movie, with Latinos, produced in Hollywood, for another decade.

@@lexis4490 Your comment was worded so poorly. Anyway, just like how they were able to cast lighter skin latinos who are relatively unknown to mainstream audiences, the same can be done for darker skinned latinos. The fact that you are here debating with me about this is just...wild. Its literally just about accuracy. Dont take or base things on people's communities or cultures if you cannot accurately reflect their faces on screen.

@@lexis4490 Gina Torres, Jharrel Jerome, Christina Millian, Selenis Levya, Ariana DeBose, Amara La Negra, etc. It's not about the cast selling the movie, this is how musicals work in theatres. The Greatest Showman didn't have great sales initially either, but it went on to still be profitable.. not to mention this is part of the streaming + theatres experiment, a fact you chose to ignore. Many people will choose to stream at home and we'll never know those numbers. Nothing is pointless when it's about your community.. excuses

@@loonybaybee Yes, you can hire dark skin Latinos in the roles. What I am saying, it will not be easy, it took 10 years for Marvel studios, a multi-billion dollar studio, to have anyone of color in the lead.
      I’m talking about reality.
So expect Latin stories not be told in Hollywood. Because the general audience can’t name a dark skin latino actor. Watch something like West Side Story make money, a movie that’s white washed and has a white perspective..

@@lexis4490 Regan Gomez. Amara La Negra. Julissa Calderon (my girl!)... But your argument is ridiculous. No one is looking to REPLACE THE ENTIRE CAST. Not one person has said that. What we are saying is - If there are 20 leads in the movie, they could not hire at least 3 actors who are Afro-lationa/o? Maybe if bs-hollywood were not just giving the more light skin actors all the roles, you would know more dark skinned ones who are struggling to be seen and this project just followed the white-washed rules. FACTS : If we had access to the audition clips, they would show a great deal of diversity. You can dig this up on social media because many people were spilling the tea on it. All types were auditioning for these roles but only a very specific look got them.

Bruh Afro-Latino is a very particular experience... There are dark skinned Latinos that do not identify as Afro-Latino and would not even know what that label means. Just say it how it is, the film did not include darker skinned latinos and the main character is Dominican... Definitely a missed opportunity. There are also latinos that have more Indigenous features that were also not reflected in the film. Latinos with blonde hair and blue eyes also not in the film.
That doesn't mean In the Heights should be cancelled. If this movie does well, then there would be a demand for Latino stories and we wouldn't need to put all our eggs into one basket. Hoping this one film will reflect all of us....not possible we're all very different with different experiences and stories that should be valued.

His explanation to that question at 3:15 was weak and he was trying not to mixed his words by the risk of getting blackballed. He knows they whitewash the cast for Hollywood consumption. Everyone who's promoting this film needs better media training when answering that question.

Or maybe you are all demanding for him to be replaced by a darker skin actor, so he is put in an awkward position. Blackballed? He barely gets cast in roles anyways.
And it is so goddam disrespectful how many people are acting like Corey Hawkins doesn’t exist in this movie. I can understand wanting dark skin Latinos as Usnavy and Vanessa, but you are dismissing how great Corey Hawkins was as Benny. That’s why I can’t run with this colorism crowd.

What you say is true, but I'm wondering why this would be laid at the feet of the actors who were cast instead of those who did the casting/had creative control? I'm not sure the vitriol--though valid--is being placed where it belongs (except for anybody who said something stupid on the subject like 'only the blanquitos were good enough,' bc that's bullshit).

God forbid Lin hired an actual Dominican to tell a Dominican immigrant in Washington Heights story. He’s about representation and getting it right, right? Instead he got his freckle faced, White Boricua brother-in-arms from Hamilton. He should have just made the character Puerto Rican. But then he would lose the immigrant angle because Puerto Ricans are technically not immigrants.

    • @BksSweetdimples

You do know that Dominicans come in all colors! And how do you know who were at the auditions? Can we celebrate that Anthony Ramos is crazy talented and he did a fantastic job. When he wins his Oscar narrative will be different.

@@BksSweetdimples Again, Ramos, Lin’s boy from Hamilton, is not Dominican. He got the role because of his connection to Lin. We can come together as Latinos when things are done right. Lin understands that. Latino identity is more nuanced than ever before. And Lin is part of that and has used that to fuel his rise to the top.
